Half Life is trash. Every single one of the weapons feel like shit. It's also partially responsible for the rise of shitty walk and talk sequences. Metro did Half Life better than Half Life ever did. At least Metro had an interesting world instead of the entire set up relying on the main character being a retard despite the main character being a fucking scientist.

Halo was great, but Half-Life was revolutionary. HL figured out how to seamlessly involve the player in its narrative without detracting from the fps gameplay. Halo made fps accessible to console gamers, added the recharging shield thing, and had a neat setting and soundtrack, but was ultimately just a (particularly large) incremental step forward.

Half-Life is a monument to story-first design principles, but the transition started way back with Quake's singplayer experience being redefined by technological limitations (fewer enemies, smaller environements) from the Doom standard. Half-Life capitalized on these changes by making the game focus more on story, allowing players to ignore gameplay-limitations.

Halo is an RTS game made sandbox-shooter made cinematic shooter. It suffers from lot of the same issues HL does but overall it's more enjoyable experience due to advanced physics (how the fuck does HL have worse grenade physics than Quake?), more varied and interesting enemy design, better AI and more open levels. And that's not me even going into arguing which game had better aesthetics.

At least when Halo 2 had a cliffhanger ending, we got a sequel to actually get the ending...we'll never get Episode 3.

But as far as which one of the first games is better, I don't remember much of HL1, since I only played through it once, but I know most of the levels in Halo overstay their welcome and one level is just another level backwards...I'd rather play Reach if I'm playing Halo and I enjoy Portal more than Half-Life 2.

I have lots of fond memories of HL2 from playing SMOD though. Not usually the vanilla levels though. SMOD actually makes half-life 2 a really good game since it reinstates some of the cut features like smarter combine and puts in really satisfying weapons.
