Childhood friend gets increasingly sidelined by MC with chuunibyou (it's a Japanese thing where kids in the eighth grade tend to act self-important by indulging in unrealistic fantasies like in anime and books) after he starts putting more focus on another girl in their school club. He brushes off everything the childhood friend says while texting the other girl until the childhood friend loses it (she even cooks dinner for him when his parents aren't home) about how he puts everything through a filter and never bothers trying to really connect with her or explain why he's like this in a way she can understand. The show itself is pretty meta. The premise is that their club actually does get superpowers one day in some random freak event, so the main character expects that their lives will change dramatically, but 10 months later, their lives are still ordinary. In addition, the main character's power is useless (a lukewarm black flame that appears in the palm of his hand and doesn't do anything) while the other club members have godlike abilities (elemental manipulation, time stopping, creation of matter, reverting things to their previous states). The main character, being the only one with chuunibyou, has fantasized about this and puts a lot of thought into the exact mechanics of each of their powers. He's also considered all the complex moral ramifications of using their powers, like curing terminal diseases, bringing the dead back to life, stopping accidents, and decides that the powers should be kept secret and not used for matters that could cause moral obligations and conflicts of interests that would only serve to put unneeded pressure on them.

The story is somewhat SoL with humorous hijinks and develops into a harem series (the MC is the only male club member and there's a loli and even girls outside the club begin to fall for him), but there is on overarching plot happening in the background outside of their field of vision, as they've been purposely kept in the dark as to the reason they have their powers by other people with powers since they're still just kids while most other people with powers are adults. There's even the occasional much darker moment like with the childhood friend's ultra rant or when the MC accidentally evolves his power into a permanent black flame that can no longer be put out and only stays on his hand, and it actually feels like real fire to him, forcing him into a situation where his friends must amputate his arm.

I actually like that idea a lot. One thing I find that turns me off from a lot of anime series is the plot armor of the MC. Knowing that shit can and will go south for a character is a refreshing change of pace.

Yeah, it feels uncalled for, but the MC isn't super generic. He's the butt of everyone's jokes for a long time because of his chuunibyou and worthless power, but it's also his positive attitude and the high amount of thought he puts into dealing with the emotional complexities everyone's powers result in them having that make them grow to respect him and his emotional sensitivity. He's not without his flaws like taking his childhood friend for granted and gravitating towards the one girl she considers a romantic threat.
