ha ha, no, that would be a Wizardry 4 OVA. Which would be badass, because the little plot there is in Wiz 4 is really cool (at least from my reading of the LP, because lol fuck putting myself through that).

But it does have a lot of great nods to the game, like trying to resurrect party members at the Temple of Cant, monsters summoning other monsters, undead being insta-destroyed with Zilwa, and other status/spell-related fuckery. [mildly] Gory too, which is a big plus.

I actually enjoyed Legend of Grimrock I and II, enjoyed Dungeon Hack, enjoyed the Eye of the Beholder games, and many more.

The biggest issue I have with the game is how the UI is set out - it looks like a gigantic clusterfuck and the actual screen size is dinky as shit. It looks like there are way too many goddamn stats that probably do jack shit except for slightly changing how your fart smells, and the font looks eye searing. This game needs day 1 modability so people can fix this. There's way too much going on that should have just been condensed.

I understand that's all we had back then as far as western RPGs went back then. But some folks have this idea that the game isn't good unless there's an RNG chance to completely ruing your progress just around the corner.

No game should have that. Maybe you can encounter X, Y, or Z, but Not 2X +Y + 3Z (by the way, 2X is going to summon more X.) and any of them alone can be devastating on their own.
It's not fun to just get your shit pushed in for no good reason other then "Well, it's random chance! Try again!" There's a reason we hide die rolls as GM/DM, to preserve some level of fun. The thing that baffles me about Grimoire is that I could've bought 10+ of the best dungeon crawlers ever to release for the same price as a single copy of this. Dungeon crawlers are dirt cheap these days, even newer stuff like Grimrock 2 I got for £2.50. You could build up a library of them that last you well over 1000 hours if that's the genre you love.

I said it's a good starting point. It won't satisfy long-time fans of the genre due to lower difficulty, but they're really solid games with much less artificial bullshit. Graphics are nice, it comes with a mapping tool to help transition you to the idea of drawing your own, pretty build ever character is viable and all are varied so you can experiment with playstyles and see what works for you. They're great as a first dungeon crawler, and not braindead or overly simple either.
