I thought that going from a kickass Espeon/Umbreon pair to just a single Eevee, as well as ditching the "always a double battle" format, was a bit of a step down.
I was also bothered by how we went from "Literally a villain who can steal pokemon, but I guess his sidekick is his moral limiter" to "Starry eyed 10 years old who could never do wrong"

No 100-battle gauntlet was a disappointment too, I fucking LOVED that in Colosseum, as well as the Casino with the bingo cards you had to win using strategy and a bit of luck.

On everything else XD was an improvement. It just felt like it had less personality despite being technically better.

This game together with colosseum are in my opinion the best Pokémon games of the franchise, and I have played all the main games since red fire leaf green and some spin offs like ranger or mistery dungeon

Gale of darkness did always have double formats though, except for maybe the first 3 hours of the game and whenever you catch a wild pokemon.
Though I agree Micheal is kinda a step down from Wes.
