Devil May Cry lore thread.

Its not very complicated.
Mundus is king of hell, Sparda is his right hand man. Sparda betrays Mundus to protect the humans because he took a human wife and loved her.
Sparda gets rekt, Mundus gets sealed away, Dante and Vergil are born, thats it. The games are just set at times when Mundus is trying to come back and claim Earth.

I know all we're told is about Mundus, Sparda, etc, but not everything seems to be related to them. For instance, Fortuna from Devil May Cry 4.

There's a huge, isolated island with a a city that's the headquarters of The Order of the Sword with cool castles and shit but we basically know nothing about it other than that.

I hope they flesh out the lore in any possible DMC5.

I fucking hate how they just brush the story/characters to the side, and I hate the faggots who endorse this shit and don't care about anything aside from gameplay. DMC4 felt so unsettlingly hollow and empty in terms of story and characters. Trish and Lady are like in 2 cutscenes and nothing is even explored. Then they add more scenes in SE and still nothing is explored. And it's even wierder coming off of DMC 3 that actually seemed like it gave a fuck. I really like what they've established, but they literally don't give a shit to explore any of it.

Set in a pseudo timeless modern earth. There are no computers per-say, but some electronics in DMC2 more than likely.

There are only 2 "Worlds", the human realm and the demon realm.

Long ago the demon world gave rise to an emperor, who decided both worlds should become one. This led to an ensuing conflict, a very likely losing one between demons and humanity, with humans being overall disorganized and several others as those who bartered with demons for power.

Temen Ni Gru, one such hub for demon worshipping humans, built the place to ensure a gateway between the human and demon realms. Several other gateways were also being constructed.

However, one Demon saw beauty in the human world, and sought to preserve it. Upon seeing the destruction to the human world, and how innocents suffered at the hands of his demon comrades, one knight turned against his own. The Legendary Dark Knight, Sparda.

Somewhere after driving back so many demons, he came across a human woman, Eva, and was strangely captivated by her. Some sources might indicate Eva was the one who called upon him, but that's debatable.

Regardless, their union resulted in twin sons, Dante, and Vergil. Unfortunately for the family, Sparda's journey was not complete, some say he died, others say he vanished, but if anything else, he was not there to protect his family when the demons descended upon them.

Most of the lore I imagine can be found in enemy files, especially in 1 and 3. Perhaps a little bit of 4.

Dante is the son of Sparda. He kicked Mundus's ass so Mundus got mad and killed Eva, Sparda's wife. Little Dante and Vergil both got mad about it so Vergil decided to become strong for some reason. Dante didn't give a shit about strength. Sparda dies sometime before the series due to unknown circumstances (DMC5 featuring Sparda as a protag will tell us how)

DMC3: Vergil gets mad about something so he challanges Dante to fight him. Vergil gets his ass kicked and is sent to hell where he meets Mundus. Mundus turns him into a demon. Dante opens "Devil May Cry" (some shit like Yorozuya from Gintama)

DMC1: Mundus creates Trish, who looks like Eva (Dante's mom) and sends her to kill Dante. They go to some Resident Evil castle. Vergil is still mad for no apparent reason. Gets his ass kicked once again. Trish fails to kill Dante, who then fails to kill her because she looks like his mom. Now Mundus is mad and gets his ass kicked too.

DMC4: filler shit featuring Nero (who is Vergil's son) who meets Dante and they fight some guy from Sparda cult. Endboss looks like he belongs in Bayonetta.

DMC2: nothing worth telling, Dante just goes to hell, the game is shit, the plot is shit, Lucia is shit. This shit isn't even connected to the DMC universe.

The in game text repeatedly states "Sparda woke up to justice" - his personal definition of right and wrong changed, the reason is never given, maybe he hit his head, maybe he never told anyone what changed his mind, the important thing is he decided this shit ain't right and kept swinging his sword until all the hell gates were closed. He protected justice for a thousand years, fathered Dante and Vergil, then went out for a pack of cigarettes and never came back.

I actually liked the idea that Nero was not Vergil's son but was indirectly related to Dante by being the descendant of Sparda but from another progenitor. Like, Sparda had banged another chick besides Eva. I thought that would tie into the third game's theme of family dysfunction.

I really like that idea but I hadn't thought of it. I just like the idea of Sparda being interested in some other woman at some point and having a child with them before ditching them for Eva. It's like finding out that your father cheated on your mother or something and finding out that you had a half-brother or that you have relatives that you didn't know about out there. Something like that really kinda hurts and it takes the person you idolized off the pedestal you had them on, you know? Something like that would have had more emotional gravity than just, "Oh hey, Vergil had a son that Dante never knew about." As far as I'm concerned, they didn't even do much with that in 4.

Even his whole persona is basically being a weeb for honmorbru samurai in contrast to Dante acting like a rockstar.

The point of Dante and Vergil is that they're both way more like each other than either of them would ever admit, and it shows in how Dante keeps all his friends at arms length and never really got with Lady or Trish while Vergil actually did and had a son like Dante bragged he would in 1.
