I actually loved it (along with the present day stuff).
HOWEVER, that was when they were actually trying to have a narrative reason to tie them altogether. Pushing the idea that everything's been covered in smoke & mirrors and conspiracies streching throughout all of history with only a few in the know and even less able to pull the strings.
That was the brilliance of the Animus, the devs and in-story had a pefect reason for inconsistencies historically. Heck even you "syncing" with the decendant had people talking to you as they died in a way that doesn't match up to to how you killed them, or vice versa. Making you question everything, really should of been the theme of all Assassin's Creed games.
But nope. Rather than strenghten that unique part of their ip, they just through random shit in with little care if it makes sense or not. It's pointless now.

That why having the Animus was good rather than a straight "historical" game where you're only a random dude, rather than one connected to a machine that's strugging to sync memories.
It made you question what was the truth. Because the target didn't die like that or they never said that....maybe a combination of both. That was why you had to "sync" the memories in order, otherwise the subject wouldn't handle it and what's shown would be even more a jumbled mess.
You had a reason for the devs and in-game to keep an gameplay varied for the player yet still progess the story with a delightful thread of mystery thoughout.

Connor was Solid Snake levels of shitted on in AC3. I felt really bad for him throughout all of it. I mean, a lot of it was his ignorance. But giving the time of when he became an assassin, the fallen order, his people and a Alien God telling him that the world would end if he doesn't succeed, all while not knowing if anything he actually did was the right choice, really made me feel for him as a character. The controls in AC3 were so refreshing. I had my doubts about the game prior to release because visually it looked like shell shaded garbage, but it was awesome.

Just wish they touched up on the stealth abilities for the forts, ie: crouch, sneak, etc etc

It's cool that it's not entirely black and white like that but it is pretty lame that it seems that nuance only exists in the story and not the actual game. From what I remember when the game was coming out it was talked up like Connor would be helping both sides since his enemy was the Templars and not just one side's army, but it still looks like you spend 90% of the game killing Brits. Oh well.
