Oh this thread again.

Selling Minecraft was probably a good idea, but doing nothing with his millions is fucking lame. If I had his money I'd set up a new gamedev studio, hire the best people and be the "ideas guy" because I'd be signing everyone's checks. It'd be fuckin' rad.

But sitting around in a candy mansion being a bitter fuck on Twitter all day is better I guess.
>>
is he dare i say it /ourguy/?

Well my life ain't shit either but at least he has more money than I have braincells left and can spend his days shitposting without mercy.

I'd do the exact same anon, but I gotta say I do love his shitposting on Twitter. I don't care for Minecraft but respect his attitude now he does not have to play nice with SJW like other devs.

They hate him cos they ain't him. I don't really know how Minecraft started or how the business evolved but should he have been the sole beneficiary of Microsoft fat wallet?
>>
>>383152262
No. He feels like shit because he knows he could have given the people who helped him out far more and he would barley have noticed it. Instead he bought a giant mansion in beverly hills in which he will live out the rest of his life alone. But at least he can shitpost on twitter.
>>
>>383151691

That would imply he didn't just get stupidly lucky with Minecraft. He hasn't got into anything like what you mention because that's all he had and it turned out to be pretty amazing for him.

Why is obligated to spend his money? Don't get me wrong, I wish he would buy a bunch of overpriced maymay stuff so I watch everyone get salty too. But still, he's probably scared about burning though it. Not all at once but a slow and steady bleed.

There's a good Darkest Dungeon quote but lazy.
>>
>>383150927
>lives in a giant mansion with a dedicated candy room
Probably. He was already ruined creatively, he couldn't improve Minecraft without stealing ideas, and the other games he worked on never even left proof-of-concept. He already sold his soul to the devil long before Microsoft, they just let him stop. And really, he was just a shit developer that got lucky.
>>
>>383152225
They thought they would all get millions for making the game worse each patch.
>>
>>383153252
The reason Notch is depressed as fuck is because he's not doing anything.

You need to either work, or have enough money to do things. He mas money and he can work.

Literally no excuse.
>>
>>383152662
There were about 35 people working with him on minecraft before he sold it to microsoft. He was the license holder and primary share holder so he got all the money from the sale (ended up being about 1.7 billion) and he gave the people he worked with only $300,000. He could have easily given them a couple million each and not even made a dent in the money he has.
>>
>>383153252
He could easily tie up half of it in safe investments and assets and then use the other half for whatever he needs or wants. Right now he's just like a rich old miser sitting in his mansion and doing nothing all day.
>>
>>383153525

Fuck off commie. It's his money. He should not have given the employees anything other than the salary they agreed on.

>>
>>383152225
People probably think it has to do with money, but all signs show that after a certain point money has extremely little impact on happiness. Those people were working on something they loved and felt like they had a purpose. That was thrown away for a massive amount of cash they didn't need. Notch was totally right in cashing in on something he didn't really care about and success he accidentally stumbled into, and they're also right for thinking he's still a shitty person for not caring about what they were working on as much as they did.

That's my take anyway.
>>
>>383154192
And they are fully within their right to resent him for cashing out and selling to Microsoft. It's common knowledge that Notch was a creative director past a point, only being an ideas guy at best. Everyone else was making art assets + coding, he was not.

The real issue is that they're all a bunch of dumb programmers. It's very typical for the early team of employees to own parts of the company, too, sort of all-for-one idea. Notch was the smart one here, keeping sole ownership. They got played and they're pissed about it.

I'm sure this is his mentality. This is also why he's utterly friendless now and spends his days alone in his mansion.

He was entirely within his right to sell the company and give them nothing, because he never split ownership. A smart thing to do if money is your only concern, but it's basically a screwjob on the employees. No wonder they hate him.
>>
>>383154768

He would have thrown them a million or two because it wouldn't be worth his time to deal with. He needs that time to make dank Twitter posts...tweets?

But if I were him and these little bastards were trying to bite the hand that's feeding them, I would hire the best Jew lawyers in town and drag out the case as long as possible. I would care about winning, I just want them to all go bankrupt paying their legal fees. Even if they won, it wouldn't be for much and it would have cost them everything.

>>
>>383155461
>They didn't buy stock.
You don't seem to understand how privately owned companies work. There is no stock to buy. This was a situation in which a bunch of friends agreed to work on this new idea with him. They didn't lawyer up or have anyone look over contracts because Notch was a friend, they probably didn't even know that it's typical for early employees in start-ups to receive portions of the company. They didn't imagine that he would one day sell the whole thing and give them a paltry sum.

Don't be so insanely devoted to what's legal and so intensely devoted to raw capitalism. What he did was fully within his rights, but it rightfully isolated him because this was an incredibly one-sided deal in his favor. He preyed on his friend's ignorance and ran away with a massive payday.
>>
>>383156529

This board is filled to the fucking brim redditors. Notch didn't invent shit, he ripped off Infiniminer. He even admits to this. And when the game was in early early alpha, he got shitloads of feedback and direction from both 4chan and SA. Well before the beta, when the game was less than a year old, he was already hiring on friends. Notch's personal involved was heavily dialed back and within 2 years of Minecraft's start he wasn't even the lead dev anymore, and this was before it truly began to explode.

He had zero influence on all of the console and mobile versions, which are all the best selling versions. What the fuck at people bending over backwards to defend him. He wouldn't have shit if we didn't personally shill the game in the early years.

What are some fun times you've had in minecraft?

Didn't really know minecraft when I got into it, but I frequented a livestream with people from 4chan, and the host of that decided to host a mc server for us.
Just casually building and exploring with a group of acquaintances is fun.
Seeing what different things people come up with, then connecting them with rails.
We had several iterations of that.

With some of those we also played on some /pol/ server with factions mod.

4craft was fun, but the best time was probably civcraft it was some reddit server, but several boards had set up towns there and formed a chanadian union. /pol/ynesia, /a/kihabra.
Server held like 150 people, and at one point we were a few short of 100 in /v/ersailles, 90+ people squeezed together and building a town in basically a few days.
Was fascinating how independently people worked so close and started collaborating spontaneously on different projects.

Yup and he's got every right to be a stuck up asshole about it too.

Unlike some indie devs who think their shit is gold.

just because you're not a seasoned game dev doesn't mean you can't be a decent ideas guy, at the very worst you'll just tell people "make me game X with game Y elements with Z setting and art style" and they'll fill in the blanks

notch has so much money that if you were the participant of a contest where you had to spend that amount on single purchases of 10000$ or below within a week you'd probably be physically incapable of winning there were some donald duck comics like this

>he's still a shitty person for not caring about what they were working on as much as they did.
Why does that make him a shitty person? Surely it would be worse if he stayed at the helm while not giving a fuck about it. He didn't want to be working on it anymore, why does that make him a bad person?
>>

This sounds so unbelievable. Why the fuck would he wave to you? Every day maybe 20 different people drive by him, does he wave to every single one of them?

notch's employees did basically zero to contribute to minecraft selling as much as it did

I'm pretty sure we all, as /v/irgins during minecraft alpha, are more entitled to those 300000$ than they are by that metric

Oh please. Under Microsoft they still had the same exact creative control until probably a year ago when they ramped up heavily on porting Minecraft into C++. They were angry with him years ago and easily be pissed off now. I believe they were upset for 'selling out', not getting their 'fair share', and worried the direction of Minecraft and the company. Of course they were pissed off that he got billions and they got a few dollars in comparison.
>>
>>383161357
Because he doesn't need to, no point funnelling all his money into projects that will almost certainly fail when he could retire completely and live a comfortable life on the interest alone.

holy shit this historical revisionism, you're acting like they're some indie garage dev that hit it big when notch already had a boulder-sized snowball rolling down the side of mount everest before he recruited a bunch of people who barely did anything important

in the end they gave far less than they got, with fat salaries, 300k, and "I worked on the best-selling game in history" on their CV

Notch didn't sell the cure of cancer to big pharma or some jew, he sold an idea that wasn't even his. He did the right thing, the devs that hate him must be SJW and maybe think they deserve more money than they got.

Also Notch would still be depressed and shitposting on twitter but without a couple billion if he didn't sell.

This is one of those situations where I can agree with you. Minecraft was a fluke. It got insanely popular because it triggered something in a lot of people, and then it turned into an autism fest, and money started printing itself.

These people COULD have organized and said "This project is worth X but we're only getting paid Y, we want to be paid in our value or we all walk" but that kind of organization is difficult, especially if half of the group is happy with 300k a year. Besides, where are they gonna go? Nowhere else in the world will pay 300k to make a shitty lego meme video game.

Being lonely just screws you up more as time goes on.
None of you understand this because you're far too young.
If you're ok career wise better start looking for a gf, before you have to settle with being alone or with some dumb cunt.
You can do it anons.

Listen, when you have as much money as he, even you know, and almost everyone you meet will be fake as fuck. You can't trust them to not take advantage of you. This is why the rich only try to befriend the rich, because they are the only other people they can trust no to leech off them. Selfish as it sounds, that's the reality.

I don't know how I'd act around notch if I befriended him.

I imagine it is intimidating even if you have the best intentions.
Like if he suggests to do something for a night, it's pricey, you know the implication if you say no you don't want to do it because of the money, that he could easily pay for it, even if you don't want him to.
Would probably be cool do play board games and drink cheap beer with.

He/me had gotten to know these people before he became retardedly rich and got the chance to give out tons of money though

but I still would maybe give someone I considered an actual friend and worked as a subordinate with me on minecraft like 100 million at most (and that's assuming they were the only one)

though if I somehow became ridiculously wealthy in real life I'd probably give all my friends cushy and overpaid positions in some of the companies I would set up, instead of just outright giving them free cash like a beggar, nepotism is less demeaning than charity
>>383169671
I wouldn't ask for anything, but I'd accept anything he offered

also if I managed to like, meet him in a bar or something I'd probably try to give some unsolicited advice or something, considering he doesn't seem happy at all

>I don't know how I'd act around notch if I befriended him.
As a guy with a rich friend the key is to not give a fuck about money.
If one of the following happens
>he thinks you are after his money
>you are after his money/when you see him you only think about money
Then you two can never really be friends.
>>
>>383150927
Why did Microsoft offer him such a huge amount of money right off the bat? Or was he previously rejecting millions of dollars?
>>
>>383170334
He apparently has a daughter.
I hope he at least fought his ex for visitation rights as he obviously didn't fight for custody, but the way he acts it just seems like he doesn't care about her.
