No one wants to play ugly female characters. Not men, and especially not women. Most monster, beast, whatever races end up looking ugly if you don't make them human enough. This isn't really a problem with male characters, because they still can look cool, but very few people want a cool female character. They want a pretty one.

All this stuff can be pretty easily confirmed by checking what people play in MMOs.

It's true, the vast majority of people don't like super-monstrous female characters. Which I think is kind of a shame, since it means that a lot of female monster designs end up looking similar, like a human with a good makeup artist. Wish developers would do some more off-beat stuff once in a while, but it's understandable why they don't.
