It's ATB combat, like in FF6, but you can change class in mid-battle. If you manage to change to all your available classes in the same battle, you get to change into a super-class that has special attacks (and acts like a summon, as in it becomes your whole party).

Gameplay-wise is very good, story is meh, but imo the gameplay makes up for it

I'll give you this, about 40% of that games story is just OK, the rest and pure and utter garbage. The only redeeming quality of X2 is the combat and dress sphere system.
