Castlevania Thread

Why is Trevor so perfect?
>>
>>383117763
It's because he doesn't care
>>
He's Medieval Squall Leonhart after discovering pussy and booze.
>>
Only complain I have is Sypha's awful fucking voice actor.

Good lord that was terrible. And I have to put up with that godawful accent if I wanna continue watching.

That fucking Bishop's voice actor was TOP NOTCH goddamn.
>>
>>383119678
>Bishop's voice actor was TOP NOTCH goddamn.

Whenever he spoke up, maybe. Sypha's voice actress needed to stick to an accent, it was sexy when she nailed the 'Spanish' one.
>>
>>383119783

Hopefully they tell whoever it is to straighten the fuck up because any time that character spoke I wanted her to stop talking.
>>
Alucard is still my favorite castlevanian, may be because he's my first ansgty edgy MC but whatever.
>>
I have to say, from the initial announcement, I figured this was going to be shit. It was actually pretty great.

I wish people didn't use the words angsty or edgy when they don't know what they mean.

Alucard was neither of those things
>>
Richard Armitage is a great actor
>>
Dracula sounds a lot like Daniel Craig.
>>
>>383123005
He did grieve over his mother's death and have nightmares about it, off the top of my head.
>>
I expected shit due to how people kept going on about the guy spearheading this kept wanting to put goat fucking into this for years and Iga turning the project down over it, as well as no Grant, but I was very surprised with how good it turned out in the end.

My biggest gripe for now is that they should have just pushed both seasons out due to them only being four episodes each. Another smaller complaint is that I was hoping it was Death himself speaking in the church to the bishop, only to be disappointed that it was generic demon that could talk. Still loved the exchange they had

>>383123191
That's not angst, though. That's remorse and guilt since game Alucard was in a position to save his mother and instead did as she wished and allowed it to happen. That kind of stuff fucks anyone and anything over.
>>
>>383123105

Voice work is different though. I was surprised how well he adapted here.

But yeah, ever since his turn as Dolarhyde in Hannibal, he's been in my upper echelon of actors.
>>
>>383123191
Wikipedia
angst [(ahngkst)] A kind of fear or anxiety; Angst is German for “fear.” It is usually applied to a deep and essentially philosophical anxiety about the world in general or personal freedom. (See existentialism.)

Urban Dictionary
edgy
Adjective. Taking coolness to its extreme and generally beyond the realm of actual possibility, while at the same time seemingly unaware of how ridiculous it is.

That's not Alucard my dude. He was all serious business about everything, he only ever showed emotion over his mother and it certainly wasn't angsty and he never attempted to be cool or look cool. He was actually pretty bland and dull if you're talking about his personality.

Once again, good job picking the worst shot you could find in the show anon. Guess every animated series in history is shit as well.
>>
Must have been written by a frequent /rAtheism fag. Also this area was Orthodox, not Catholic.
>>
>>383124443
So in real life it was the Orthodox that angered Dracula?
>>
>>383124443
I don't think that's the case. God blatantly exists within the series' canon as does Hell, one of the priests creating holy water was portrayed in a positive light as were the speakers. It was really only the corrupt church (mainly the bishop) that was explicitly using god's name for the act of evil and they were even called out as not being loved by god for their heinous actions.

As for the orthodox/catholic thing, IDK about it but this is an alternate universe where vampire slayers and black magic are commonplace. Hairsplitting at this point.

>>383124625
I haven't even watched the series nor care to until it's finished, but you're blatantly a faggot with an agenda passing off the worst shot as consistent standard of quality for a series. Even Soul Eater Not, terrible as it was, is usually better animated than that one infamous scene.
>>
>>383124764
Not him but most of the action scenes are pretty choppy.

And that wouldn't be that big of a deal if it were the length of any normal animated series instead it was 4 episodes. Just feels like laziness.
>>
>>383124904
There's 8 more coming. No idea why Netflix broke it into 4 and 8 episode chunks.
>>
>>383124958
Are you sure there's 8 more coming? I thought the series as a whole was gonna be 8.
>>
>>383125021
I thought it was 4 and then 8, but now I'm not sure now that you are questioning me.
>>
>>383124904
The animation was on point if you asked me, even for scenes like the angry mob they had detailed snow particles subtly placed in some shots and tiny details like Dracula making his hands bleed with his nails or the flames flickering. There was plenty going on in the background during shots.

As for stiff movement, scenes like Alucard dashing only to be countered by Trevor or Trevor jumping off Sypha to hit the cyclops were extremely fluid. Sypha's spells came out pretty smoothly as well. I only really remember 2 shots sticking out as particularly bad, but given the wide array of animators that's to be expected. It's a bit more disappointing in this case since it's only 4 episodes as you said, but it was supposed to be 8 before being split into 2 parts so I can somewhat sympathize.
>>
So did it finally happen? Did we finally get a video game adaptation that isn't shit?

Who now wants a new Castlemania with the tone of this show? Following Bloodborne's style could be a starting point, but it has to have Castlevania gameplay
>>
How could they possibly fuck up the next season?
>>
>>383124279
The key framing is actually pretty good, they're just doing this on 4s for some reason. Although the odd part is Alucard and Trevor are staggard so one updates every 2 frames collectively even if they're both moving every 4th frame.

Animation is usually done on 2s (characters move every 2 frames) but here they probably tried to save some money since it's a wide shot by doing half the work. Basically all this needs is an inbetween frame between each action and this would look fine.

There are plenty of anime shows with decent to good animation but if you despise something just because it uses low or stopped frames than it is your taste that is very narrow.

Using different framepacing is a big part of even the quality Japanese animation and there is nothing """nu""" about it.

It's American, and it's still cheap. We don't know the budget. It looks a little better than tv animation, but not by miles.

>Why are japs so fucking stupid and incompetent?

They know what they're doing. When they want to, they can make the best smoothest animation in the world with highly detailed art. Just that most anime is cheap as shit for turbo nerds so it has sweatshop tier budgets.

>>
>>383133343
the Simpsons animation was outsourced later to Korea but it still follows the work and artstyle of the original American animators

this on the other hand is like Korra, where they use Korean animators specialized in Japanese animation from the start and the whole artstyle and frame pacing is built around them.

You're a fucking idiot. The middle ages marked a period of anti-science where we lost a bunch of scientific knowledge from the past, like from Greeks and Romans. The Church turned on science, mathematics and philosophy, setting back technological progress several hundred years, and burning "witches" and others who defied the church in the search for scientific enlightment and discovery.
>>
It's nice how it ties the plot of Symphony and 3 together like that. In 3 it's not really stated WHY Dracula is a dick, or why Alucard leaves Dracula.

Though, it's clearly implied that Alucard witnessed Lisa's burning, and that he was a child at the time.

This storyline also strongly implies that Dracula was redeemable and could in fact have been a benefactor of humanity.

If we're lucky, somewhere in the next 4-8 episodes. Sypha in the original lore was sealed in stone for like 30 years before she was met, but they clearly took liberties there.

I actually hope they showcase more of Dracula before he began his rampage, since I never knew how much I wanted to just see Mathias dick around and possibly showcase more of what he's like besides "HA HA HA!" teleporting and wine throwing.
>>
Next up is the first game. How in the hell are they going to adapt that? It's the story of ONE guy going off to kill Dracula... again. It's super simple. should they skip it? Simon Belmont and his story is probably the most iconic of Castlevanias. The only way it can work is if they put 1 and Simon's Quest as one series.

Now a big problem with the Castlevania storyline is that it's very repetitive, and video gamey. It's in the past, Dracula is either revived or about to revive, and you gotta go kill him. That's pretty much all the storylines.

Rondo and Symphony are definitely going to be done. They already introduced Alucard here, and they're using the Symphony design. And they're a duology, so they pair up nicely.

It's what other games they're going to do that's the question. Simon's storyline is skippable since nothing really happens, so can it be skipped? Rondo-Symphony is the continuation of, and end of Alucard's main storyline. Then Aria builds upon Symphony with the new lord.

Rondo is pretty late, like almost 1800, so that's like 350 years after 3.

Are you 15 years old and do you get your history knowledge from meme images like this?
>>
How can we defeat Dracula without him coming back? Who keeps bringing Castlevania back?
>>
>>383138903

The image is really dumb, as it assumes linear progress, and assumes modern style speedy progress that is really a pretty modern phenomenon.

Go to 300 bc and then 100 AD. There's definitely some advancement, but it's much more stuble than 1700 to 2000.

There was a genuine period of economic and political decline in Europe because of the fall of Rome though. It took them a long time to get the ball rolling again.

This was in development hell since mid 00s, anyway Ellis said from get go he wrote it and envisioned it as a movie trilogy.
The fact it's confirmed for 12 episodes flat out confirms that they just took the 3 movies and split them into 4 episodes each.
Shame we have to wait until next year for the next two movies but oh well. Most likely they still need some work done.

Always wanted to play the extra things in those games but I do know the saturn version is glitchy, cant render some stuff properly and I don't even know if there's an english version.

We need to support this. Sign up for netflix to watch it. Watch it multiple times, even on mute. Failing that, bump up its views. If you're at a friends, ask if you can play Castlevania eps on mute on a tab. Recommend it to friends. Get the word out.

If this is successful, we'll get more seasons, and maybe even more shows. Me, I'd love to see games like Final Fantasy 6 get adaptions.

No, SotN hacking never got very mature. They're still at the reverse engineering the map system and shit. The only SotN hacks we get are a few that mess with stats to make it harder or more balanced.

Saturn content is a mixed bag, really. "Third Hand" is a nice system. Other than that, it's pretty meh. The new sprite work on the enemies is pretty awful. This is rushjob b-team shit. The new areas are short and just connect a few corrodors to each other.

The series has 3 main playstyles.

1. 2D action platformer
2. 2D exploration platformer
3. 3D action.

The ones worth playing:

2D action platformer:

1
3 (Netflix series is an adaption of this)
Bloodlines
Rondo

2D exploration:
Symphony (sequel to rondo)
Aria
Order of Ecclessia

1 kicks my ass left and right, and I've never properly beaten it. 1-3 are pretty old, and slow and the Belmonts move pretty stiffly. Movement gets more fluid in later games.

I felt that way too, but I think this is intentional to make the townsfolk's hatred towards Lisa and obedience to the church more believable.

Also, I don't know how much Dracula has terrorized the country already. He states he is a recluse and that the castle hasn't moved in years.

>>383137053
Vampires are just normal creatures depending on the game, and reserved as high level bosses in others. Like the 64 games had them as enhanced humans, while the 2D games have them as very rare and powerful entities like Annet in Rondo Remake / the one who I can't think of his name from Portrait yet had that "blood art technique" and even figured out how to separate Dracula from his own castle.

I don't think they've ever had vampires suck blood besides Dracula in... Ecclessia? I think he had a move in that game where he grabs and sucks for health regen or something. Alucard had DARK METAMORPHASIS and would regain health from enemy blood splatters, which is different from the usual antics.

The correct order would be:

>Symphony of the Night (Playstation)

Symphony of the Night is pretty much the pinnacle of the series and there's a bunch of GBA/DS games that play like it but I haven't finished any of them. Any 3D Castlevania can and should probably be skipped over.

>prays at a ruined church alter before heading out

>fights a cyclops, a powerful Dracula monster

Anime:
>Trevor is a wise cracking Ellis style protagonist who doesn't care about anything

>Grandkid was looking for Alucard
>Cyclops is unrelated to Dracula and guards the sleeping warrior (for some reason. Did Alucard set this up?)

>>
>>383146443

There's been tons of that for years already if you know where to look.
>>
>>383146806
So this scene can have more meaning when they eventually get to SOTN
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuZqhyN_Ek0
>>
>>383146806
Because 3 is the first game in the series chronologically (ignoring the shitty PS2 game) and actually has a cast of multiple characters that work together.
>>
>>383146806
Because 3 is the earliest (good) installment since SotN is a sequel to Rondo, which is a sequel to the original Castlevania trilogy.

Also, this adaptation has a lot of elements from SotN anyway, like Alucard's design and the Lisa/Dracula story.

I'm guessing if this show continues for a while, the rest of season 1 (the eight more episodes coming out next year) will finish off CV3's story, then season 2 will be Simon Belmont's story, and season 3 will be Symphony of the Night.
>>
>>383146806
>Why 3 and not SotN?

3 is an iconic NES game many remember, and it's a prequel storyline. And it has a big cast of characters. This introduces Alucard, LIsa and Dracula for future storylines.

Also Symphony is nice but it's a sequel to Rondo. Why start at a game that's a sequel?

>he got cucked by death twice already yet he's still his buttbuddy

To be fair death has to obey god, and thats was what set mathias on the path to become dracula, he fought in the crusades to defend the name of god, but god still sent death to take elizabeth as a "thank you" gift for Mathias.

After using alchemy to track down death and learn the truth that god fucked him over, he made the choice to team over with death and take over the soul of walter, the big bad vampire of the time, mathias needed his soul to become a vampire lord himself.

Elizabeth got reincarnated in the form of alucard mother centuries down the line, she got killed again and dracula got cheated of his waifu once more, centuries later she was reborn has mina hakuba in japan, and dracula was reborn as soma, and this time "dracula" got to be with his waifu.

With luck they will live together until they die of old age, the game left pretty clear the only thing stopping soma from turning back into dracula is mina being at his side, the instant she dies he turns in dracula.

Btw Death genuinely likes Dracula and only sticks around out of loyalty and friendship.

Also, the Belmonts are clearly pius HOLY Christian warriors. You know, holy powers, holy whip, holy cross. So far I can't see this Trevor throwing a cross as a boomerang.

He reminds me a LOT of Guts from Berserk. Which is fine for that series. Guts has a strong anti-authoritarian and anti-clerical streak which fits that character and universe more. Trevors scene with the Bishop felt like Guts confronting Mozgus.

The point is that humans have corrupted the church. It's made clear later that God does indeed exist, but that His teachings have been twisted by evil men to justify atrocities. At least one of the church's men was implied by Trevor to be a former cutthroat (the knife fighter), who likely joined up because he knew he could abuse his power as a man of the cloth.

That one priest later on that is directed by Trevor to create holy water implies that there are still good men in the church that have not spurned God's teachings and are rewarded in kind, they're just not the greedy fucks in power.

Generally, with some series, especially with ones with bigger Western fanbases than Japanese, I think the Western localization is better. Mega Man sounds better than Rock Man. I know what Kitamura was going for, but it sounds weird for Westerners. Sonic localization was better than Japanese. Most of the Castlevania localization was good, such as Trevor Belmont vs. Ralph Belmondo.

Though, a good translation of the Japanese title would be "Dracula's Demonic Castle". "Demon Castle" would have been a cool title for the series that gets the idea across. It'd be pretty similar to the Demon's Souls or Dark Souls titles.

>but the animation in the slow bits was pretty shit

I've watched Fist of the North Star and Armored Troopers VOTOMS. I love these shows. You have no idea what "bad animation" is. I can put up with a lot of shit. This is pretty good.

Big bonuses that I like:

1. Colors. Nips are for whatever reason obsessed with washed out low contrast colors and bright scenes. Any modern anime shows the outdoors like it's the brightest most oppressive day imaginable, basically impossible to go outsdie sans hat and shades. I thought it was inherent to digipaint, but nope, it's just how the Japanese use digipaint. Color wise this looks a lot like anime pre-2001.

2. The designs. Slight "anime" stylization, but with small eyes and realistic shapes and proportions. I fucking LOVE this shit. Reminds me of 80's manga style. Never super huge in anime proper. I really hate moe minimalized faces. It looks so bad. A little big eyes is fine, but they take it way too far.

I want my anime bitches to have proper noses and adult faces instead of no nose round headed hobgoblins you see in anime today.

Sylpha is a good compromize. Her eyes are a little bigger than everyone else's, but it's not crazy huge.

Art style reminds me a lot of Berserk actually. Miura, before he went loli crazy, tended to draw girls with larger eyes, but everyone else realistic.

There's old news, back when it was in dev hell that Ellis thought having a pirate around is stupid and wasn't going to be included. The rest is inferential:

1. He hasn't been confirmed.
2. Trevor wields knives and it makes no sense to have two knife guys.

I think it's lame, as if the pirate angle is too much, then just make him a brigand. Grant is a cool acrobatic guy who can cling to walls.
>>
>>383150221
Depends on how you wanna take Iga's stance on things, since Leon was also a part of the Crusades from what I recall, and fought in God's name, which would have them doing it proper back in LoI, which was like 300ish years before CV3.

CV3 had them banished to another land with only Trevor being around from what I recall, and seeing as he had the whip, it would make sense that he would likely keep up faith and traditions due to it having lots of requirements involved for that sacred power to shine, based on PoR and Aria backstory.

>>383157548
Very tiny % of people wanting to archive it in case they remove it later, since I've considered that, though I'm neither of those and can pay the $10 a month for a Netflix account and already enjoyed the show earlier at like 4 AM today on a binge.

>>383150221
>I could be very wrong but, wasn't the Belmonts in the CV3 era treated as a cursed family and held in contempt? Didn't the holy warrior thing started proper in CV3?

I'm a little loose on the lore as I've played them but never got deep into the manual storylines. But yes, the Belmonts of Trevor's era are scorned and Trevor saving the land is what redeemed the family.

But here's my proofs:

1. Trevor starts his quest by praying at a Church.
2. He literally beats monsters with a cross and holy water.

So far Anime-Trevor seems a-religious, anti-clerical, and the series really hammers how awful Catholics are, and seems to delight in the Bishop getting his comeuppance. I can see Ellis saying "Ha! Take that Bishop" as he wrote it. All this isn't part of 3 at all. I really can't picture Trevor belmont fighting or killing Priests of all things. So this sub-plot feels uneeded to Castlevania.

Cuz it's SO simple to fix. He was a former pirate who turned Brigand, or he was always a Brigand. You can make little changes to make things fit, it's better than outright removing a character.

I don't have a problem with the church being portrayed as the bad guys in some stories but for Castlevania and/or vampire fiction where the protagonists quite frequently have to maintain intense faith in God and very often put their lives on the line with holy relics it feels out of place, but what's worse is that Dracula is some kind of 'ha ha SCIENCE IS GOOD!' character for some reason despite how all his powers come from fucking hell and darkness and evil.

Dracula cries blood at the very beginning when he's speaking to that old woman about his wife's death.

People who don't want plot contrivances in their stories? It's just bad writing, other than the dude holding a blade the villagers had no reason to trust Trevor or to just kill the guy.

There's no justification for them to do so and instead it comes off forced and paints the villagers as inconsistent in their beliefs or completely irrational to the point they flip flop on a dime.
>>383161980
That's never portrayed in the story outside of him threatening Trevor and the seekers and of course he wasn't a real priest, but the villagers don't know any of that.

I'll say this. Some parts of the Europe were worse off than others. Western Europe generally did see some downgrades once the more backwards Germanic tribal society (royalty= tribal chieftains). However in the east, you still had the Roman Empire doing its thing, and generally conditions were faaaaar better off, unless you lived in areas heavily raided. Sadly the Turks and barbarian crusaders had to the fuck that up.

I just finished episode 4. I like it for the most part and I agree with how Grant hasn't shown up yet, I think Trevor being a reluctant hero and meeting Sypha first was the way to go.

I don't agree with:

1) Dracula's background. He was suppose to have went berserk like 300 years ago. Instead it happened 1 year ago, which doesn't make sense because later Trevor states that his great-grandfather (which would have been around 300 years ago) knew about Dracula. They should have kept his original background.

2) Alucard's hair isn't black.

3) The demon that killed the priest wasn't even important and died like 3 minutes later. It should have at least been a boss on the CV3 game just as homage, but instead it was a random.

Everything else was really cool.
>>
>>383170838

But his hair is black in CV3, AoS, and DoS. It's only blonde in SotN, probably because he's been asleep for so long. He was only asleep for a year, plus this is CV3... it should have just been black. I'm not asking for a 100% loyal adaptation, I think it's been mostly great so far, but Alucard being blonde at this point in time is just awkward.

1.Your first point doesn't make sense. It's perfectly aligned for CV3. Trevor us technically the first Belmont to fight "Dracula". He originally was defeated by Leon and just kinda chilled out for a couple hundred years being a vampire then Lisa comes along and gets murdered them he kisses his shit.

2.Alucards hair was never black when he's in his true form and not disguised as Genya
