I'm no fan of Valve, but whenever a VAC ban wave goes out it brings a smile to my face. It's nice to know they'll shut down entire cashes of their previous digital hats and skins, which although they already have from the original sales, preventing themselves from making more money. The fact that they do it in waves rather than as soon as they detect cheaters makes it even better too.

When you purchase a game on Steam you're paying for a service. You broke the rules and all they really do is not let you access to servers that do not want cheaters.

Also, you know perfectly under those circumstances that what you're doing is wrong, and you're going to receive a ban for it, it's just a matter of time. If someone told you just "if you give me $20 I'll give you this game" it would work, but technically when you buy a game you're also agreeing that you will not do certain things and otherwise you can just not buy the goddamn thing.

Take into consideration that toasters had a different meaning back then. In 2004, if you had a PC from 1999 with A voodoo 2 trying to play Half-Life 2, the chances are you wouldn't be able to even run it. I upgraded to an ATI 9800XT roughly 8 or so months prior to its release and just toning down your settings to low and it looked abysmal. It was worse if you had an Nvidia in 2004 as they had a harder time running Half Life 2 then older ATI Direct X 7-8 cards did.

Well, much of Source was an entire overhaul of gldsrc and its predecessor QuakeWorld. But the engine isn't just enhanced, even John Carmack himself said there's some quack code here and there in Source back in 2004, but not much overall. At that point it moved far enough from Quake outside of things like bsp compiling ect.
