It still doesn't look great. I'll grant you that it looks better than it did at launch day, and the character customization is finally fixed, but it's still a pretty shit game.
The only thing the Mass Effect trilogy really excelled at was the characters, and most of them fucking suck in Andromeda. I liked Vetra, Kallo and Drack. That's it. Cora's bland and her soulless thousand yard state and oddly always-smiling face creep me out. Liam is the generic dindu sidekick that you always leave behind. Peebee is a pain in the ass. The Angarans all suck as a race, and most of them are assholes, not to mention they look fucking goofy and so do their weapons. The Kett are just boring as antagonists, not to mention that the big reveal of "Oh noes, the Kett are Angarans that have been genetically fucked! We've been fighting our own people!" wasn't really an interesting twist because the reapers did the exact same fucking thing in Mass Effect 3.

It is far from game of the year. If I played it after they fixed a lot of the problems, I think I'd like it more, but unfortunately I played it before that, and dragged myself through a sloppy mess of a game.

Yep. When you go to examine that collector base you get a chance to scan a collector body and find out that its genetic code matches the Protheans.
So in that case, they pulled that "They be changing us" thing even before ME3, I just didn't mention that because there aren't any Protheans with you in ME2 to get upset about it.

In ME3, the reaper enemies are modified versions of the races that are actually around to see it.
