The Ghost Leviathan has been added to Experimental Mode. It's in the Lost River Bones Field. And the one there is just a youngster. The devs are going to put several in other areas, each one getting bigger and bigger until the full-sized adult is what spawns in the Void as a deterrence to going there. One of the confirmed locations is the Grand Reef.

Also, the Giant Cove Tree with all the Ghostrays around it? The things in its branches are Ghost Leviathan eggs. They hatch there and migrate out into the world as they grow. There's going to be a newborn baby Ghost Leviathan in the Giant Tree Cove, then the larger one in the Bones Field, then the larger one in the Grand Reef, likely one in the Dunes or Mountains or Sea Treader's Path, and then the gigantic adult in the Void
>>
Size comparison between the one that spawn naturally and the one you can spawn with the console. As you can see there is a noticeable difference. The console-spawned one will likely be the size of the one in the Grand Reef.

And holy shit the sounds it makes are fucking terrifying.

If they do end up putting one in the tree cove then that area will lose the spooky yet comfy ambience that it once had. I would rather they just put some near the blood kelp areas and then some around the void.

The one there will be the smallest of the bunch and likely not aggressive, being a newborn and all. At least that's what I'm hoping.

The one in the Ghost Forest has a specific location it spawns at, where the gigantic skull is at the opening to the tunnel that leads from the Deep Grand Reef entrance and has the Precursor Cache in it. So if you come from the DGR you're guaranteed to run into it.

>>383106743
The rays are passive, you got swarmed by either Lava Lizards or River Prowlers.

I certainly hope so. Having to deal with two leviathans so close together would be annoying.

>>383106743
I would suggest getting the thermal reactor for the cyclops before you try to spend any significant time in the lava zone. You can cheese the power drain using the thermal reactor for the prawn but it's time consuming.

Just finished 100% the Aurora.
Jesus Christ I was not ready for all these batteries and power cells.
Can't drop the gym bags inside your base though, lame as fuck, made lugging them around totally pointless.

So, now what? I think I need a moon pool to progress further, so I guess I'll try to find those, but I'm pretty sure they aren't around the aurora since I spent like 6 in-game days cruising around just trying to find the fucking entrances to the Aurora.

One of the 20 developers that works at the game studio went on a twitter crusade about how there are no guns in-game because of Sandy Hook
but there are torpedoes and punchy mechs now so the lack of guns isn't a big deal
I think its the type of game that benefits from having sparse lethal weaponry early on, makes you feel more exposed and vulnerable

Question: are the devs implementing the color palette, attracting or scaring off certain creatures?

Say, you paing your Cyclops in Reaper colors, they'll be less prone to attack you, but in return you'll get more hassled with bigger beasts?
>>
i want a fucking harpoon gun,
I'm sure it goes against whatever they're trying to make with this game,
but i got the cyclops and then kinda went.... What now?
I can see another Awesome game where you and two other guys are managing the Cyclops for deep salvaging runs. A guy working the engines, a guy on sonar and a guy piloting.
Then frantically trying to fire torpedoes at giant sea monsters.

Or you find a wreck and you have someone in the prawn suit cutting down bulkheads and lifting cargo,
Someone in a seamoth scouting the area or luring monsters away and someone in the cyclops maintaining video and radio with both, scanning sonar and standing by the punch it outta there.

Part of my fear of the deeps is the obscene pressure, that you'd get crushed like an old egg beneath a truck tire if you were left without the protection of special equipment.

Office gopher who says stupid shit. You can still keep him though. Australia doesn't want him.
>>
>>383121589
He's the one who claimed muh sandyhook when people asked why there's no guns. The actual developers say that they didn't want guns for gameplay reasons, the idea being you have to devise creative solutions to deal with creatures trying to rip your face off.

You can argue about whether or not their version of creative solutions actually works or not.
>>
>>383119035
>Compared to their aggression against you/Moth/PRAWN which is far less over the top and more territorial.
still sounds plausible, since smaller target is a lesser threat to feeding ground, unlike a Reaper-sized Cyclops which would potentially leave them without any food, which is why they try so hard to get rid of it
>>
>>383121709
They fuck off on their own. Once they reach the end of their path they warp out and start again unless they take damage, at which point they restart early. If it's not attacking you yet you can ignore it because they don't until a certain point in the story. You'd best avoid them in a Moth/PRAWN though, once they do start attacking you they'll warp you out of the thing.
>>
>>383121729
I like the "no guns" idea
It forces you to think outside the box and makes enemies that much scarier
>>
>>383104005
The thing that makes Leviathans scariest is their grab/kill animations.
What kill animation should the Ghost Leviathan have?

>character drops item and desperately tries to swim away as the ghost inhales him into its small mouth

or

>hammerhead appendages light up as it grabs you with telekinetic force before drawing you in

>>
>>383121935
Then he was attacking you, yeah. If those balls hit you're warped out of your vehicle, or to a random nearby location if not in one. If you're in a area with predators and it misses they might warp in some of those instead like Ampeels if in the Blood Kelp Zone.

>>383123414
at least there is a reinforced diving suit which allows you to swim around in the hotter water without taking damage. im just disappointed that the hot water makes not nearly enough damage to be concerning.... swimming around without reinforced diving suit like a hot dog in boiling water is just uncomfortable, but not life-threatening. they should at least visualize pressure by giving you a slowly increasing vignetting effect which can make you black out if you stay to long outside
>>
>>383123840
Draconis was actually supposed to be the medium option between the Seamoth and the Cyclops, but they spent so much time getting those two to work they scrapped the concept on account of the fact that a sub in between those two would make both become irrelevant.

>>383123903
You still take some damage with the suit, but very little. If I'm outside in the ALZ I take about a barely visible sliver of health in the time it takes to build two corridors.
>>
>>383123276
If you mean they dont in real life you are wrong.
>>
>>383123981
i know you still take little damage with the suit, but only if you swim really close to hot areas. i meant that even WITHOUT suit the hot water is not really concerning. they should really significantly ramp up the damage of hot water when swimming around in it without a suit

Nah people don't physically crush at the depths in subnautica
If you think of people as balloons with lungs as the inside, body as the skin and water as the outside, as long as the internal pressure = external pressure all you require is that the skin can take 2x that pressure.
Now consider that the body is mostly water, which is for all intents and purposes an incompressible fluid, and also consider that the pressure is acting uniformly on the body so there are no pressure gradients.

Obviously it is irrelevant because you'd die from narcosis long before this but it would take a lot more pressure than you'd think to crush a human body with equilibrated lung pressure.

it is technically possible to counteract narcosis. you just have to find a way to get the nitrogen gas out of your body, like it would do under normal atmospheric conditions. most of the nitrogen in out body doesn't even leave us through the lungs, but the skin. they just have some liquid ventilation breathing system to prevent the lungs from collapsing and a suit which can get the compressed nitrogen out of the body. its the friggin future.. they could just have nanobots in their blood binding and expelling the nitrogen they collect from your cells.

> gas transfer gradients in blood

both problems of narcosis, neither are going to crush your body
> sheer pressure on soft tissue
shear stress is irrelevant as the pressure is uniform, no shear can occur
if you actually meant sheer pressure then volumetric strain on unsupported soft tissue is 7% and 4% which only means like a 2% change in any single dimension

i think i have seen a console triggered landing animation for the sunbeam on youtube at one time, so yeah, you might be able to pull it off. and its only triggered when you actually listen to the message on your radio. i was hanging out at the active lava zone already, checking out the primary containment, and still had no sunbeam countdown. i only got it when i finally decided to play all the messages, and even then i had days of in-game time for the first sunbeam radio message to play and to find the plants and make the hatching enzymes if the cure enzymes would be even collectible.

Deep sea gigantism is a thing, when you rarely eat things it helps to be one large stomach that can swallow things whole. Likewise you've got things that are minuscule instead.

>>383131636
It's large, serpentine and bioluminescent. As far as some of Subnautica's creatures go it's not that weird, even Reaper Leviathans are basically just large oarfish.
>>
>>383132004
there is deep-sea gigantism though, lots of creatures become huge to adapt to the cold, pressure and lack of food (last one sounds dumb but the bigger something is the more efficient it can be in metabolic terms so it has to consume a smaller ratio of its own mass)

Thing is that animals don't start off big and only evolve slowly. It would need to live in a habitat for millions of years where it was always an advantage to get bigger. Largest ever animal is the blue whale at ~30m.

Adult max size Ghost Leviathan is over 100m long. There is absolutely no reason to be that big.
>>
>>383132004

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep-sea_gigantism
>>
>>383132004
Quite the opposite actually.

>In zoology, deep-sea gigantism, also known as abyssal gigantism, is the tendency for species of invertebrates and other deep-sea dwelling animals to display a larger size than their shallower-water relatives. Proposed explanations involve adaptation to scarcer food resources, greater pressure or colder temperature at depth.
>>
>>383132004
It's literally the exact opposite.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep-sea_gigantism

On the other hand, typically decreased oxygen and increased pressure should mean decreased size, so it depends on the KIND of creature. Fish, for instance, get smaller the further down you go; arthropods/crustaceans get bigger.

Not really.

Not many planets have water. And even fewer have life outside of bacteria.

There is that typical fallacious argument that as the universe is infinite, there must be planets with intelligent life (or gigantic ocean life) out there, but this is not true. There are infinite numbers between 1 and 2 but none of them are 3. There are infinite planets but none of them outside of Earth will have life. That's how it is.

Earth being the only planet with life, probably quite unlikely.

Being the only planet with multicellular life at a scale massive enough to see with the naked human eye is another thing entirely, though.

Large Things is kind of a weird deviation on the main path of life; the vast, VAST majority of all organic substance on this planet is contained in single-celled microscopic organisms.

As rare as a planet capable of supporting life is, and as rare as abiogenesis occurring ON said planet is on top of that, you want to add the third coin-landed-on-its-side moment of evolution creating enormous things?

Before we continue: There is nothing wrong with anime, it is a very rich niche of culture and righteous morality that fights post-modernism by replicating itself ironically.

As for your point, saying that there is no right or wrong - or saying that everyone is valid/invalid - is just sophist relativism. You are a sophist.

>You know how many "enormous things" are on this planet alone?
Comparatively few.

But the most telling point is the Single Common Ancestor problem.

See, the thing about life that makes it hard to perceptualize statistically is that it's self-propagating; an event can be exceedingly unlikely, but as long as it happens exactly ONCE, you'll see a lot of it, because it's going to duplicate.

All life on earth, as best as anyone has yet been able to determine, has a single common ancestor. Despite our planet being incontrovertibly suited to the support of life, life popping up out of nowhere has only happened exactly one time. And the same is true of big things; ALL living things visible to the naked eye have (as near as anyone can tell) a single common intermediate ancestor. Meaning that the circumstances conducive to big things coming into existence happened exactly once; single-celled microscoping organisms didn't independently develop into multicellular creatures on multiple occasions.

We see that convergence a lot in evolution; we can say wings are common because multiple different evolutionary "backstories" have led to wings. Same with eyes in the front of the head. Hell, even intelligence/tool use has convergent evolution properties from multiple sources.

But being a big agglomeration of specialized cells cooperating to support a massive being is something that happened once in the history of life and then nature just sort of ran with it. All modern "big stuff" is a riff on that billion year old design; bacterial colonies didn't shit out another multicellular creature halfway down the line.

okay firstly
>meaningful life
>meaningful
you've added a completely subjective arbitrary term to that rule that means that if anyone refutes it you can just say "no that's not meaningful".
It means that the statement isn't rigid and therefore isn't really useful (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_true_Scotsman) and has only become something tautologically defensible.

Secondly
>the infinite will usually not include all possibilities, only some
A possibility is something that, by definition, has a >0% chance of happening. The probability that 3 is between 1 and 2 is 0, therefore it is not a possibility, so you can't claim that "not all possibilities are included" with that argument.
With one simple supposition that the events are independent it is trivial to show that all events will occur. I'm not stupid enough to claim that these events are independent. So I'm not going to claim there is or isn't life.

I have however shown that your "demonstration" is a piss poor fallacious argument and you are a stupid cunt.

This game is so fucking boring.
Its not even proper survival, because you have to be some special idiot to actually die.
You make a base, which is piss easy, then you make your subs and then you take a tour around the relatively small area and then you've seen everything the game has to offer.

Congratulations, now you can uninstall it.

Because the answer is, nothing. Its an "alien-underwater aquarium" simulator with a bunch of huge creatures to give the underage shitters and autists a fright.
I'm already hesitating to actually call it a game. If they at least would've scrapped the "build your base" part, it might've hold out as a novelty game.

Water isn't as rare as you think it is:
https://www.nasa.gov/topics/universe/features/universe20110722.html

>Two teams of astronomers have discovered the largest and farthest reservoir of water ever detected in the universe. The water, equivalent to 140 trillion times all the water in the world's ocean, surrounds a huge, feeding black hole, called a quasar, more than 12 billion light-years away.

There are phenomena in space that literally create water from hydrogen and oxygen molecules as they undergo fusion, and spew it out across the universe at a fantastic rate.

You get weird things if you build a base near them too. You take a swim in the ILZ/ALZ, Sea Dragon's will look big but not as big as they are. You build a base and look at them from a window they suddenly look their proper size. Size is an ongoing issue though, they keep making a mess of Sea Dragon's altogether. They're slightly smaller than a fullgrown Ghost right now when they're supposed to be slightly longer.

Seriously everyone gets this
Swimming on the surface of a large pool of water and not being able to see the bottom is one of the inbuilt human fears
Your mind is telling you to get the fuck out before something eats you.
That said in Subnautica there is seldom reason to stay on the surface other than in shallow areas, so you instead stick to the sea floor which I can assure you is far less terrifying.
There are still some spooky areas that you can't really avoid though, like the islands surrounded by incredibly deep water that just fuck me up.

its why shit like the Crabsquid is so spooky, because its hard to nail down exactly what its apearance is based on because of how alien it looks

Swim around and find places you can go to with your current depth limit. Find items there to allow you to explore new areas, then repeat until you're 1700m below the surface in a cave filled with lava and death.

Except for the fact that there are the Underwater Mountains, Blood Kelp Zones, any area with a wreck suspended on something, Aurora, etc, where you literally have to tread water in the middle of the ocean as you explore. Not only that, but Dunes, Mountain, and anything in the Ghost Reef or below is filled with terrors that you have no reasonable way of combating and not even the Cyclops can save you now.

I love this game but fuck me if it isn't bullshit levels of difficult and spook at times, especially ever since Cyclops no longer operates like a moving safezone. Mountain biome is probably the most egregious of all.
>>
>>383143514
Probably because it's not meant to be "spooky", and just supposed to be a simulation of deep sea diving on an alien planet. Everyone projecting that it's a spooky or horror theme kind of pisses me off, because it only sets people up for disappointment if they aren't afraid of the concept of Mexican Sugardancing.
>>
Is there any point to scanning all the planet's shit? At first I thought maybe they can be used to research new tech, but so far I just bloat my logs.

They seriously need to reduce the number of bonesharks. There are just way too fucking many of them. If it's supposed to be an apex predator, it seriously needs to be far less common.

You can upgrade the crush depth to 1500m. Also it can do cool things like sonar scan the terrain and recharge your smaller submersibles.

Also, like others have said, you can build stuff in it like a fabricator and more storage. You can also probably grow food in it if you want. It's a mobile base of sorts. Later on, you can even park it in hot environments or heat vents to have it recharge itself. It's a bit of an ordeal getting to that point though.

People push the spooky-meme here because fear of the ocean/abyss is an incredibly common innate human fear. Ergo, a game based around exploring the depths of an abyssal ocean invokes terror in lots of people.

I would like to think nobody would be pants-on-head retarded enough to expect spooky if they don't fit that very basic criteria from the start. I don't think you can blame a game about terrifying clowns not scaring you if you buy it knowing you aren't afraid of clowns.

That's a straight up lie. You switch to SR or turn the engine off and they ignore you right away. They'll bump into you because you're in their path but they won't come around for another attack.
>>
>>383145143
Cyclops is incredibly finicky right now.

Previously, it was unkillable. Slow and ate power like a motherfucker, but unkillable. That meant you could fill it with materials, food, water, a bed, and a seamoth, slowly drag its behemoth ass into somewhere like Mountain or Dunes where the entire zone is filled with lovecraftian horrors, and use it as a mobile base/launch point while you explored and gathered.

However now since Silent Running, creatures show incredible aggression to it even when on silent or engines off, filling it with valuables/important stuff and parking it at the corner of Leviathan Rape Street and Bone Shark Zerg Avenue is an extremely risky proposition.

So it mostly sits useless back at base or barely used out of fear you'll lose it and need to spend another hour and a half farming mats for a new one.

I never even have to repair these days. The Overshield is strong enough to take three Reaper hits in a row before getting any hull damage and if that fails there's the Shield Defense. Actually, the could combine the Twisty Bridges and Marianas Trench biomes. Have the Bridges spanning the top of the chasm and down a hundred meters or so, then open water until you reach the bottom of the trench at a depth of 1700 meters or so. And in the trench can be the weirdest things like a giant gulper eel or a giant crab-like thing, maybe tentacles emerging from the floor and walls of the trench.

It took me a while to come to grips with how you're supposed to use it too. It's annoying and interferes with the enjoyment of the game but you basically HAVE to upgrade it to bring to viability.

Didn't notice the sound meter until last night. Basically so long as you aren't making noise, you're not so much of a target. So you can turn off the engines or use silent running to try to deal with the creature attack bs. Also you need to keep a decoy loaded for emergencies. It's a lot of work moving that thing around but eventually you get used to it.

I mean, I get what the devs were going for, but when your ideas of adding "realism" conflict with the playability of the game, especially in contrast to how the rest of the game plays, it's time to rethink your goals and find some common ground between them.

We are a rubbish meal for a pelagic predator, they need blubber and fatty meats like they get from cetaceans and seals.

>>383147626
Overshield is self repairing and automatic. Shield Defense is the upgrade. Between the two, you'll never take hull damage.

Silent running mode would be much more fun if you could use it like in real life, gain momentum, turn off the engine, and let yourself drift, with some rudder controls, which have to be kept minimal, or you risk to slow down to much

Worse. "Crushed" is smol tiem. When you say crushed it leaves the impression of just being compacted into a smaller area by force. I wouldn't say 'far'. Content-wise, this update added basically the final quest, meeting the Sea Emp, activating all the portals to each different zone, etc. Now the only 'content' they have to add is collecting the shit to feed the eggs, hatching the eggs, the sequence to deactivate the bighuge gun, then creating the rocket and escaping. Easily within 1-2 more major updates, it will be 'release' worthy.

This game has been in early for over 4 years. The devs take about a year to release a single creature. It's optimized like trash. Nothing to do besides crafting. Barely any creature variety. They scrapped one of the coolest looking creatures they had planned(rockpuncher) because of their idiocy.

Don't support this early access trash. This game is far from release and the devs have absolutely no idea what they're doing.

Combat comes to mind, because as it stands the variety of aggressive creatures (small as it is) comes down to exactly two: enemy fish that you can shoo with a knife and giant enemy fish you have to run away form. Then I'd like there to be research element beyond scanning x amount of randomly found pieces of metal, ideally it'd also incorporate researching flora and fauna and devising solutions based on them, like making fastest water movement would only be possible if you research a reaper, or scanning one of the deep sea plants would give you new forms of base building that woudl be sterner. Then there's a matter of your base, beyond scanner room and arbitrary progression wall in form of modification stations it has no functionality, though it sure as hell has a billion retarded cosmetics to be put there, that thing should have upgrade progression that would provide you with more basic needs eliminating the tedium of them in lategame. Also when it comes to the base the whole structural strength mechanic needs a rework, since right now it's completely numerical and very linear at that.

It's an open world survival game with some key differences that set it apart from most other survival games. The most important of those differences being that you're actually working towards completion of the game. There's also a story that ties into it. In that sense, it's one of the only survival games that's actually a game since there's a means to win.

>Still no creature with a mouth 3 times the size of your body and rows of razor sharp, jagged teeth that burrows through the sea floor and can pop out and eat you whole or tear your Seamoth apart
>Still no giant crab monster that crawls around with creepy, spindly legs
>Still no spooky tentacle monster that grips onto your face like a face hugger and crushes you to death unless you can shake/stab it off

God dammit Subnautica devs, stop making glowing fish and make me some god damn nightmare fuel!

I thought he was supposed to stick around the large skeletal remains? Did they change up the layout a bit in the Lost River, or does he just range that far while patrolling because I don't remember seeing that many dead trees so close to the skeleton.
>>
I hate the randomness of blueprint acquisition. Here I am sitting on a pile of upgrade blueprints for my Seamoth that I would very much like to implement, but I can't, because I didn't found blueprints for a docking station.

I dunno, I'm right next to Lifepod 2 because I just got that message and I thought I would take a look around. I thought this was just the upper tree area and was going to pop down to the main tree for a look when it showed up.

I'm running back to my main base for my stasis rifle and I'm going to kill it.

It can travel for a distance although it cools down and often creates a upper crust the moment it hits water. It doesn't quite look like the ALZ in Subnautica, but it can look exceedingly dramatic on it's own accord.

I'd guess databank entries aren't high on the list for experimental, hard to cause troublesome bugs with that. At worst you get spelling errors.
