Gen 2 = Gen 6 > Gen 1 > Gen 3 > Gen 5 > Gen 4 > Gen 7

Gen 1 was a good start. Gen 2 was the peak because they were more structured and were bolstered by the joy of their little pet project becoming a cultural phenomenon. There was a drop in Gen 3 when Nishida became less involved with the art design process after Gen 2, this is clearest in the human character design where Sugimori's personal quirks shine through far brighter, there is also the shift to digital coloring which may be a downer. Gen 4 was a victim of stagnation and easily has the blandest designs, just like how the games themselves are the blandest in the series. Gen 5 was russian roulette with the sheer amount they put in, so it had some pretty good ones and some pretty bad ones. Gen 6 they put their full effort in, being inspired by the new design process of actually making thorough concept art for the Pokemon, designing Pokemon with the big leap into 3D graphics in mind, and they knew Sugimori was stepping out as art director for the next generation, and they managed their peak once more. Gen 7 Ohmura stepped into the art director chair and ruined everything with his terrible approvals and awful official artwork, thankfully he has left Game Freak since SM and you can tell clearly from the art we have seen for USUM someone else has taken over the illustrations.

1. Because the older style has largely died out in any franchise, not just Pokemon. Try looking at the TCG (not the fullart rares though), many of them still use very distinctive styles and such.
2. It follows the rest of the child friendly media around it becoming more like that. Smooth, clear colors and portions are a prime style that is widely appealing to modern audiences.
3. It was just a surprise that it blew up that much back then, they didn't make it with the mindset that it was one of the most popular series on the planet then, just a game based on some Japanese kid's love of catching bugs made into a video game. It was new and small with artists that they just had.

The problem is that a large portion of Pocket Monsters aren't monstrous. I don't mean they can't be cute, but they should monstrous as well. The gen 7 starters' first stage are all pretty good, but man, do they look fucking lame by their final evolved form.

I really miss having the sprites in Pokemon. The shift to 3D gets cool but only after a while. The sprites just felt more natural and more Pokemon. Replaying Black 2 and it felt like a completely new game cause I didn't remember most of anything till recently.
