Why the fuck do they create another folder in the "My Documents" folder to hold the save files? Literally no other games on Steam seem to do this, it is only GTA, other games can actually store them in the same folder as everything else. Why is this?

What? Hardly any games store their saves in the install directory unless you're playing some portable version. It's either documents or appdata.

Virtually all steam games store in saves in "steamapps" which the rest of the game data
>>383088114
No they don't. Any dev worth their salt stores saves outside the install directory so when you delete the game your saves and configs are retained.
>>383088114
They really don't. Games store saves in Documents (or elsewhere) because the Program Files directories are part of the protected Windows directories that typically need admin privileges to write/edit files inside.

it's a user access control setting thing
basically, microsoft has a list of best practices you're supposed to follow when you write a program, and some people (rockstar) listened to it

I have tons of games create folders in My Documents.
ArcSys Works
Guacamelee
Skullgirls
WB Games
Square Enix
Almost Human
Westerado
Ghostbusters
KoeiTecmo
Not sure what games exactly some of those are for but this isn't a new thing.

Likely less disc usage

You must have shit taste in games because I have more than 10 good games that have save files in My Games folder.
I dont feel like making a thread but I just bought vice city and the controls for my 360 controller are all messed up. Didnt have this problem with san andreas. Found a controller mod but havent bothered installing and checking it yet. Options doesnt work. Is this common?
>>383086508
Its a hold over from old windows games as a whole. Program Files is protected and can't be written easily or often. As a result, everything was saved to My Documents, which wasn't protected.
Not an issue as much nowadays thanks to Steam, though some companies still do it for various reasons.

Do you really need every PC game to be on Steam? I prefer mine with no clients.

Where are Oblivion/Skyrim saves stored again? Seriously I cant find them in my documents or program files. Other than My Documents what are common locaitons for save files
I worry about the day when all saves are stored on the steam cloud...I know its going to happen eventually...

Go play The Witcher 3 or Bethesda games (entire Elder Scrolls series or Fallout series) or Nier: Automata or all Dark Souls.
