It's like in the original Cyborg 009 where two of the main characters were supposed to burn up on re-entry but it's left in an ambiguous way, the author was so moved by the fans tears that he retconned that shit and kept it going a bit more. The only time I can recall her being "bubbly" is when she interacts with the children but it's quite obviously just the facade of a good role model she puts on like most people do. Nah AC got Tifa well enough. Aerith is the character who has done a complete about face from a sort of street wise and emotionally strong individual who realizes they have to make a sacrifice and goes through with it to complete 2pure5us martyr tier.

Cloud is second place as far as butchering goes. They took one trait of his from a tiny sliver of the game and ran with it. Their justification makes some sense (survivor's guilt and the aftermath of a period of high adrenaline and crisis would logically be followed by depression, sure) but it ignores the personal development he went through too much.

Somehow I managed to block that from my memory but not the rest of that shitty game.
