In precisely 22 hours and 53 minutes, Grimoire, the herald of pure RPG excellence, releases. IT TOOK 23 LITERAL YEARS TO MAKE (HOLY SHIT), so you know it's gonna be great! The developer is one of the last Neanderthals alive and he possesses the intelligence of five average Homo Sapiens combined. And it can be all yours for the low, low price of 40 AMERICAN DOLLARS. Let us discuss this incoming masterpiece.

There's no market in pandering to morons. I wouldn't want to make that kind of money.

Grimoire is an elite game that is unlike anything else up on the Steam store. I defy you to find anything like it in the thousands of games listed. I defy you to find a game like it on the planet. It's not even a Wizardry clone really - it's everything Wizardry should have been but never was.

I'm not competing with Sir-Tech any more. Amongst other reasons, they went bankrupt 17 years ago.

I'm not competing with anybody. Grimoire is the pinnacle of the peak of the summit of the incline. I could probably get 99.95 from a lot of people but I don't want to limit it just to the very elect of RPG players. I made a compromise and and priced it somewhere just under current AAA titles. The truth is there is not an AAA title you could buy nowadays that deserves to crawl up on a high chair and plant a kiss in the crack of Grimoire's ass when it comes to enjoyment, immersion and wonderful escape.

I say all this with confidence because I have been playing my game 12 hours a day for two months and I can assure you there has never been anything like it in all of recorded human history. It's the greatest thing ever to emerge from that genre. The fact is, people who enjoy that genre are considering it cheap at that price. If you are not a connoisseur of the genre then why would I amend anything in it to appeal to you? It's like saying Mozart needed more cowbell.

Trust what I am saying. Those of you who played the demo and got the scent of greatness will know the full game has achieved it. For whatever it lacks it has much more in abundance.

I was just playing Kublai Cathedral to check all the logic and was almost weeping tears of joy at how wonderfully told the story of everything is in the game. I had forgotten a lot of it and it was like reading the work of someone else.

The game will suck you mentally into another dimension of win and excellence, no kidding. I warn unstable people against playing it at all. If it becomes that kind of obsession with the author - who should be long tired of it by now - you can imagine what elite fans RPGs will feel.

The game is special. I have supercharged it with awesomeness right down to the atomic level of every bit in the digital binary. $39.95 is very cheap once you have played the game for a short while.

Grimoire is a quality game for distinguished monocle wearing top hat and tuxedo connoisseurs of roleplaying games. This is not another whackamole begware lowest common denominator sewer skimming bottom feeding title. I would recommend that regular Steam consumers have a doctor standing by before playing Grimoire as the shock to the system could lead to a trip to the emergency room. It's not like anything they are used to seeing up here. This is the true old skool goodness. You may think you are prepared but rest assured you probably have not seen this much awesomeness anywhere in the past 20 years.

Wasn't the game supposed to be releasing on Thursday night, like every other release on Steam? 7/7/2017? Why is it now 8/7/2017? Is Cleve scamming people?

I am cautiously excited about the game but I have a feeling that it is more like this.. random fantasy where every kind of creature and race and whatever has been mashed together so it resembles a psychedelic trip more than a medieval high fantasy game.

Looking forward to this more than I probably should. Been craving another game like this ever since Grimrock. Shame Grimrock 2 was so horribly optimized that I couldn't even play it at lowest settings without going sub 30 FPS.
>>
>>383074128
The game looks like a fucking game straight out of the 90's (BECAUSE IT IS BASICALLY). Expecting $40 for it is ridiculous. $20 would be a much better price point, and probably get more sales and be more profitable in the long run. Setting the price at $40 just means your competitors are going to are going to have a much easier time beating you, regardless if your game was of better quality or not.

>>
>>383074716
>>383074432
I have last veto on any price anywhere as the author.

This game will never, ever be offered anywhere for $12.95 before the year 2025. That's a promise.

I am considering an opening discount. It is highly recommended by Steam. After that, it will go to full price and stay there for the next 8 years.

I am following the development of SHELTERED and they are doing a good job adding new detail every few months. It's a very good investment.

Anybody doesn't like it is invited to spend 20 years of their own time writing a game superior to all previous Wizardry releases. Good luck, it's easy to say but hard to do. Working alone, it's impossible unless you are a Neanderthal.
>>
>>383073541
Where's Wizardry 8?
>>
>>383074514
I wish Cleve could patch in a Dolphin as playable race. Imagine a dolphin in plate armor wearing a spear and casting water magic. Damn that would be cool and fits every fantasy settings.
>>
Demo was shit. Awful character creation (3 rolls for skill points, then you either go with the third or have to scrap the char, if you don't get at least 30 out of 32 - prepare to get fucked in-game), writing is complete tripe, movement makes you dizzy (try ultra-smooth to skate on butter), encounters work on the principle of "one exact type of attack works great, the rest is complete shit", battles take up to 12 turns to complete, there's a limb system, but it does jack shit and just overburdens the system further. Skill points are not distributed at the char creation screen, instead you need to select your characters, then go to stat list for each one to see whether or not they still have point left to distribute. Casters are worthless, except bard who constantly levels up his songs and in an hour learns to lull anything and everything to sleep. Characters lose vitality by guarding, which is why your casters will spend their time poking monsters with their staffs. Puny exp and gold rewards, boring maps. 4/10 tops, yet Neandronethals will defend this mess.

I have worked for two months to assure it isn't a buggy mess.

Ordinary mortals could not possibly imagine the amount of work I have done during this time to deliver a product looking as smooth as the one I have in front of me right now. Just blitz after blitz followed by retesting and verification. 50% of the time is taken doing verification. There are so many factors that are related to other factors they can cascade into unforeseen problems if not retested. As I said it is one big integrated story.

Play balancing is going to improve from widespread random testing. The game logic and behaviour is 10,000% improved over that superdemo.

Grimoire is the twisted, demented result of a mad man's dream. He speaks of IQ, which anyone who knows anything about IQ tests, are biased towards certain types of intelligence and are fundamentally flawes. He proclaims himself the decedent of a dead species simply because he must be a special snowflake of some form, however being an Australian, he was most likely assaulted by an Emu or ate some bad veggiemite in his youth.

Grimoire itself is a bloated, out of date monstrosity that this man could not let go of years ago. It's filled with a ton of pointless stats, pointless magic, and pointless dialogue.

It's never going to full release, and if it does, it will only sell about 1,000 to 1,500 copies, and then we will be treated to the ravings of Cleve as he sees his dream collapse under the realization that he missed the boat 20 years ago.
Pic related, Cleve's face after release.

It's so dense it is like those 12000 page novels written out in longhand on legal paper they find in the apartments of adult retards when they die.

It's so dense it is as thick as jungle foliage that you need two machetes to clear a trail through.

There are wheels within wheels in Grimoire and wheels inside of those wheels. Those wheels have little wheels inside them running wheels. Grimoire is a fractal it is so dense.

Sorry, but after two months of playing my own game I have to say that Crusaders Wizardry 7 is just a pale shadow of this win and excellence. I started as an imitator but I am finishing as something else.

Corwin doesn't know what he is missing, seriously. The game is x infinity better than the version he tested.

Listen to what I was double-checking today. You're not going to believe it.

So I freed Q'Orl from the Royal Bestiary and he left to go to the Astral Plain. I also fought the cockatrice here and got the braid.

After sawing off the lock at [REDACTED] I noticed it was pretty solid gold so I spoke to one of the thieves in the woods about it. He told me something amazing - that there was a smith in Crowl who could work a piece of raw gold like that into some pretty spectacular armour. I took it back to Smithy and he told me to leave it with him, he'd see what he could do.

I went off and had some amazing adventures in a dungeon to the far west and discovered a Djinn Bottle. I got the Djinn to reveal the secret page for me and later I asked him to transport us to the Astral Plain. We met up with Q'Orl again and he gave us something very special in reward for traveling so far to see him again. We moongated back to Dominion Wilderness outside the city and I spent some time forging a recommendation letter for Shrike to see if we could join up with the Vanguard.

I went back to see Smithy, stopping at another weird cave for some excellent rewards before arriving back in Crowl. I was increasingly getting pretty fitted out, the entire party was wielding some pretty serious weapons and magic.

Smithy had made me the best armor in the game, the golden armor. Pretty pimped out at this point, plus two resurrected party members from bones and one of the Ego entities had joined us and they had gargantua stats. Was getting in shape to beat up some of the toughest monsters in the game. All this happened today just wandering around testing and double-checking various elements of gameplay.

At least Cleve spend 23 years of his life autistically making a throwback game of a dead genre.
You on the other hand have done nothing in your life to show off.

Nice projection, Cleve. When I get money I'll actually fund a studio and find talented contractors to make a game with. With stable income of 200-300 thousand a year, I will be able to do that in a few years. It will be a small project, but miles better and on a way tighter schedule than your crap.

Kek are you really trying to compare AAA devs to Indie devs?
Also I'm talking about the whole game, to get people to buy it. If they see they have to pay 40 dollars for the whole thing, they're going to say no. Offer them episodes for like 5 dollars each, and they'll be more willing to spend money.
Again though we're talking about indie devs and not regular devs.

Game will sell a couple thousand copies, bought by the few who actually played all those old games and still ahve time to play them between work, wife and kids. The younger crowd, interested because they tried Legend of Grimrock or maybe Wizardry 8, will ask for refunds when they realise the game is anti-progress and has the obtuse interface and controls of the games of old, in other words, is not a game that combines the "feeling" of old games with modern games, it literally is a 25 year old game.

I honestly think the game is going to sell pretty decent, coupled with the fact that the game was developed practically by one man, Cleve will probably make a pretty decent chunk of change off of it. >Did you read the in-game texts?
Okay. Here are some oracle texts.

Flannel Shirt - A nice warm shirt with a little stain on the collar. Oh, it's ruined now! Good thing you got this shirt super identified or you'd have never known.

Dead Rat - Yep, it's dead alright. Could this be considered a food group? Who could possibly chomp down on a rotten rat carcass and then say "Mmmm, mom the rat sure is choice tonight. Seconds for me!" Maybe if they were some kind of disgusting hideous monster that had missed breakfast. Even then, they probably would not be too happy about it ... they'd look at it and think, okay, it's a dead rat ... but the way things are going I might not get anything to eat at all today. I'll just bite into it hard and think ... "Fried Chicken! With the Colonel's special spices and seasoning, that's what that funny taste is!"

Hunting Shirt - This burlap shirt once belonged to a hunter who lived in the Fertile Crescent. He made his living by selling Rhattu furs as part of his unique clothing line. Needless to say, the garb never really caught on and he amassed a couple hundred thousand furs that nobody wanted to buy. One day when he was trying to restack his inventory, the furs fell over on him in a great big heap and he was suffocated with the smell of Rhattu all around him. Tragic. Just... tragic.

Moccasins - A small label on the sole of the moccasin in stamped "A.C.M.E." You were thinking it was some handcrafted natural organic shoe made by native peoples, but alas it's just another mass market assembly line product, no doubt sewn together in some sweatshop by starving Rhattu puppies who were not even employed under any kind of labor law contracts. Try to enjoy your moccasins produced from the blood of the working classes, you exploiter of rat babies!

Also, Cleve has explicitly mentioned on numerous occasions, just how he dislikes Bradley's purple prose, and even said, that, from a halfway point onwards, Grimoire is an explicit parody of Wiz7 and other similar games, not a retelling. Bad Bradley-isms in superdemo seem to be there for the purpose of later being mocked or deconstructed. Which, of course, doesn't absolve those texts from being Bradley-isms - and bad ones at that.

>>
Gonna wait for some legitimate reviews but i'll probably buy it if it has a release discount 40 USD is a little steep and I even enjoyed the demo.
>>
>>383091947
Also, by "Bradley's style" I mean this:

Walking through the trees, you suddenly stop.
A torrent of thought sweeps past you, dark haunted images, escaping from behind the locked confines of your own mentations.
Like a shock, your mind begins to race with the impact of all events that have brought you to this place.
Does Mankind have a destiny?
Does the Universe have a destiny?
Could it be possible to alter the Universe of all that has been before?
Or is all that can be, to remain all that is.
Who is this Dark Savant, this dark herald of change?
And what role shall you play?
Will your actions assist the approach of a new order within the universe, or hasten the onslaught of its own destruction.
And how can you be certain of the difference...
These thoughts begin to fade as quickly as they appeared, and soon your gaze returns to the forest where you stand.
Perhaps somewhere here on this new world lie the answers.
And then again, perhaps not.

The majority of texts in Grimoire's superdemo are written in the style, that really tries to be similar, but ends up being, well, just overly verbose, I guess.
>>
>>383092437

The starting paragraph in the demo is the worst. In 23 years of dev work Cleve didn't manage to edit his text and change that contextually inappropriate 'long, deep nap' to 'long, deep sleep'. What a fucking chode.
>>
>>383092437
Nah, those "funny" descriptions are pretty rare, the majority are normal, or contain explicit hints on how to solve puzzles.

That being said, there are 1000+ items in the game, right?

Each one can be identified by the oracle.

Thus providing a unique description.

Yep, 1000+ descriptions.

Also, save before using items on oracles, those oracles have limited number of uses and they don't ever recharge.
>>
>>383092816
The "Dead rat" oracle descriptions are NOT the attempts to mimic Bradley, they are pure Cleve through and through.

The attempts to mimic Bradley are all the OTHER texts in the superdemo, the ones I didn't even bother to transcribe they are so plain and featureless.

The "Dead rat" descriptions are actually the only texts in the superdemo I've found even remotely interesting specifically because they don't try to ape Bradley.

Don't forget idiots from codex collectively getting their rumps on fire (a fraction of them will still claim Grimoire is the best everything of 2017), as well as madman's own neverending rage at Sir-Tech. I hope Romero's wife and other old Sir-Tech employees shower him with sarcastic tweets the moment the game launches. The meltdown would be legendary.

>This game is not shovelware. It's not a casual game. It's not trying to appeal to a wider audience to make more money by dumbing down to lowest common denominator. Coming from a society that has dumbed down everything to cater to them since the day they were born, many newbs will wonder what the fuss is all about. Grimoire is for elite connoisseurs of computer roleplaying games with very refined tastes. If you don't think a game like Grimoire is worth $1000, much less $40 then you probably are not a fan of these kinds of games. You are welcome to look on the Steam store, on GOG, on Humble Bundle or anywhere on the internet to find a similar game. You won't find it because it doesn't exist. Even the Wizardry titles are just pale shadows of Grimoire now, they are forerunners but Grimoire gets it all right. Grimoire is the gold standard for these sorts of games. People who believe this was going to be just another blobber will discover they were sorely mistaken. Grimoire is the first and possibly last game of this calibre, at least until Grimoire II arrives.

>P.S. After what is likely an opening discount, Grimoire will never be discounted or put on sale ever again. You will never see Grimoire sold for $15 but in 8 years you might see it down to $20. In the meantime, I guess you won't be playing this game if you're not respectful enough to pay what it is worth as product. I am amazed at the shovelware people pay $50 for without thinking but believe because Grimoire has an old fashioned aesthetic it must be worth less that those titles. Neanderthals have an older aesthetic too ... 300 pounds of muscle, six foot tall with an 1800 cc brain and the ability to see in the dark. I don't know that this implies they were inferior to modern people.

So what? Why does it matter whether the game is good or not? That's not the point. When this game started development, Doom was the big-name PC title of the year. The first Doom. It's a piece of history, and to be this hung up on whether the game is good or shit is completely missing the point.

Nigger, creative projects are a worm that gnaws at you and eats your soul, day by day, hour by hour. The golden rule is, as follows: wrap every big project you start in a year. After two years you become locked in a cycle of constant destruction and creation, because nothing can satisfy you anymore. And that's how I know this game WON'T be good.

See the problem is I've played these games before and the combat systems which you'll be interacting with for the vast majority of your playtime are always basic. It's because in the game, the characters know that it is some sort of snake, but they don't know for sure what species it is.
For example, before you can identify what spell a scroll does, it will be named ?Scroll?.
If they used the spell called identify then the snakes displayed name would be it's actual name.
