Dungeon finder wasn't bad at first when it was limited to only the server you played on. It basically sped up the normally shitty chat spam. The problem came with CROSS server dungeon finder. Server community meant jackshit at that point then.


WOTLK was a great expansion, but it was the beginning of the end. It introduced too many bad changes, which, when combined together towards the end of the expansion, led to the shitshow we have today. Compounded with Cata's total shitting on the perfectly crafted world into "RAWR, DEATHWING SMASH CONTINENT", it was the transition of WoW from a finely crafted fantasy world with memorable lore and characters, to Chris Metzen's fanfiction with orc dicks.

I'm a nearly 30 oldfag, I played alpha, and WoW amazes me. The entire game is concepts recycled and refined from other RPGs - and it was massively successful. Yet for all success they yielded from that, they still couldn't avoid the pitfall that devours literally every other MMORPG in existence: the level cap. Vanilla skyrim was like heroine; it was fucking amazing, but by level 50 you needed more and more just to sustain that high. We were chasing the dragon, and if we're all being really honest with ourselves, we know the high from the expansions was very fleeting. Rather than churn out one mediocre expansion after the next, blizz should of focused the end-game-content on PvP, and shifted research and development efforts towards a new game. And just like a sleezy heroine dealer, blizzard knew exactly what they were doing. But they don't care about creating the best, they just want to milk away your shekels because they know you're an addict.

Because they plan to use it. People said the same thing about Murloc textures, then they reused them all over the broken isles, eye of azshara, and for several bosses in the tomb of sargeras.

There's plenty to bitch about with wow but they only update textures when they know they'll get mileage out of them. With all the new void-related textures, models, and confirmation that Argus isn't an expansion we're definitely headed towards an old god expansion.

1) Too much knowledge. We know too much. We datamine too much. We record dps/hps/etc too much. Before content's even out, usually.

2) Simple evolution of the genre. Shit's all about being accessible and easy now. The term "Achievement" has lost all meaning since you get them left and right just for doing normal shit on any difficulty, not "achieving" something difficult, unique, challenging, or special.

No expansion is going to fix that. No Vanilla Server is going to recreate it. The third problem is the people: We can't undo #1 and #2, so #3 is that people are going to require shit like handholding addons and shit even on Vanilla servers, more like QuestHelper and DBM than WhisperCleanse and Quality of Life shit.

Even in FFXIV, you're expected to watch a video before going into shit. I agree with this in their case because half that shit isn't obvious or explained, so you'd waste 10-20mins+ of 3 to 7 to 23 peoples' time if you fuck around and miss something crucial. But they're making it a little easier now that certain mechanics always use the same effects, e.g; Petrify/Confuse Gaze-style attacks show a big purple eye effect on the boss to hint at "TURN AROUND, BITCH"

Actually, Vanilla was pretty rough. Too slow, too many pigeonholed classes, but it was still a frontier. BC with the QoL changes and making specs viable was probably best, but the decline began in Wrath when, while they upped the Storytelling game tons, they lost a lot of other shit, especially "Welfare Epics" from the Argent Tourney.

On a related note, as someone who thinks BC was the Golden Era, Cata was very much necessary. The old world needed revamping BAD. Fuck Pandas and everything after, though. Good fap material, but never should have happened.

Cata was a brave attempt but one that was ultimately a trainwreck. Recreating the world while simultaneously trying to develop a new expansion stressed their team too thin. That led to shit like Uldum and Redridge coming out as pop culture references more than an actual story.

You are exaggerating. I've been back to classic very recently and it is extremely similar to the present. It actually feels better in some ways because stat weights actually mean something and every ability you cast has a significant impact on your survival. A lot of the QoL changes they made were made as a result of their incessant streamlining. AoE looting for example is irrelevant because you very rarely were in a situation where you had to loot more than 5 mobs from a pull. In nu-wow most mobs are weak and superfluous; you frequently fight flimsy monsters with a 30 pets that are all lootable; OR you are so overpowered from bullshit stats that you clear a whole area without taking damage.

Honestly when I first got the idea, I had images of that "traveler and mercenary body guard/guide wind up best bros despite them only having met out of mutual benefit" cliche running through my head.
It didn't turn out even close to that obviously, we barely said a word beyond him telling me when the monsters were clear enough that I shouldn't aggro anything.

It was more of a hope than an expectation honestly, although I'd kill for an MMO where playing a character as a combatant is an actual choice and other methods of advancing in the game world are feasible.
The idea of the ability to kill things really well being something another player would actually find worth paying for just seems so completely unimaginable considering where MMOs are now though.

To be frank, the game is more enjoyable when the power levels are toned down. I dont think anyone really liked being "The true hero of Azeroth" with some fucking artifact that nobody should ever wield.

If they spin this right, we will have a more domestic threat to deal with, like pirates n shit, with the old gods and their void corruption being an overlying but subtle tone throughout the expansion.
