PS2 one is flat out great, straight up adaptation of Millennium Falcon arc up to the fight with Grunbeld, has an original mini scenario written by Miura also spliced inbetween.

So I got into this manga after the thread a few days ago, and I'm hooked. Griffith just talked to the princess about dreams and what friends mean to him, and he looks like a total fruitcake but when he gets that look in his eyes I'm reminded that he's likely going to fuck shit up.

The novel shows that Grunbeld isn't evil like Griffith. I'm quite convinced that Miura is going to go for a plot point where the oracle loli and/or the Apostles will see Griffith's true nature as cunt extraordinaire and dump him. With the exception of that creepy assassin apostle, all of them seem to have actually been "good" people rather than common scum before becoming Apostles.
Grunbeld for example retained all of his chivalry and honor as an Apostle.

If you're just taking in the visuals then it will seem edgy. Yeah, it's dark and has some really heavy subject matter, but there's a lot of genuine sincerity and heartfelt characters and moments. The only "edgy" periods of Berserk are Black Swordsman and start of Conviction (generally referred to as Lost Children, it's a sub-arc within Conviction arc) and there are very good story reasons for that cause you see, Berserk starts in medias res with Black Swordsman arc, it's not the chronological beginning of the series, that's the Golden Age arc to which Black Swordsman cuts to once it ends as an elaborate flashback to explain the motivations behind the main character.

Golden Age movies used the old dub cast, which was one of very few good things about them especially since the new Japanese cast they used was a lot worse than the original anime's. 2016 uses a new English cast entirely for seemingly no reason.

There's also the Berserk: Prototype chapter which as the name implies, was a rough prototype for the entire series and is the oldest in terms of production. According to Miura, it's canon but loosely because some elements of it directly contradict the lore he established for the series proper. Placement is somewhere during/between Black Swordsman and Lost Children portion of Conviction.

To all those asking about anime:

97 anime adapts very first chapter of Black Swordsman arc and most of Golden Age arc, which is chronologically the first but release order wise second in the series. It adapts most of it, looks great and sounds even better, though due to low budget it uses a lot of stills or just subtle animation enough to fool your brain that you're not watching a static picture. It does have full on animated scenes for the scenes that actually matter so don't worry. Perfect adaptation aside from the ending portion removing important character from the story and ending on a gigantic cliffhanger that all but screams "NOW GO AND BUY THE FUCKING MANGA" because the manga was only up to that point back then and they didn't want to do anime original ending nonsense.

Then there's the Golden Age Movie Trilogy from late 00s/early 10s that adapts ONLY the Golden Age but uses a metric fuckton of CGI and removes basically all the character development and scenes for anyone that isn't Guts and Casca and is very rushed. The CGI is also very noticeable, but it uses 2D in a lot of places as well and all faces of the CGI models are still 2D drawn except for no-name background characters.
On the plus side it actually kept the Skull Knight character (which the 97 anime removed from the ending portion of it) and thus wraps up SLIGHTLY better than the 97 anime despite ending on a cliffhanger as well.
NOT recommended on first viewing really due to the amount of content it skips and removes, watch 97 first and then maybe this one or at the very least the third movie since it's the only one with content that 97 anime didn't already cover.

And then there's the abomination that is 2016/2017 anime which is 95% VERY BAD Sub-PS2 tier CGI and rest 5% being slideshow 2D that's not even that good outside of blatantly traced manga panels.
It adapts the Conviction arc (but not the Lost Children portion) and most of Millennium Falcon arc.
Pretty awful and insult to the franchise.

The first 3 episodes are technically still Black Swordsman arc, slightly rearranged and with Count portion replaced by a no-name Apostle, but it's still during events of Black Swordsman.
Between the 97 anime having the Snake Baron and the Musou having him and the Count and this anime having this OC Apostle, I'd say Black Swordsman is covered well enough all things considered.

That's the point. The sacrifice is supposed to be a huge deal actually make. The Count couldn't go through with a second one, Rosine missed her parents as she died, and Griffith had to lose literally everything before considering it.

Having the sacrifice be okay with it is such a fucking copout.

at first nobody knew about apostles or demons or whatever. then suddenly demons had races "ogres, trolls, kelpie, ..."
which imo changes alot because suddenly they become like just some fucked up animals with known behavior and patterns. that's why I never liked Schierke. she's a walking encyclopedia who takes away a lot of the pure fucking darkness and mystery of the first arcs.

every apostle was this torn monster who eats and tortures humans. then they became just dudes who fight alongside humans. he made being an apostle look cool.
most of the action got really over the top.

the magic became too prominent as well. berserk wasn't that big on the fantasy theme but now you have the wind element dude, the fire element dude, ... a witch who looks EXACTLY like a witch. he added too many plain generic fantasy elements. boring imo.

I don't think Lovecraft fans ignore that he was a racist. I think it's generally understood that him being a racist along with a shut-in and an oddball in general all contributed to him being such an influential author. A socially comfortable person simply wouldn't have had the sort of perspective on the universe that leads a person to write shit like The Dunwich Horror or A Shadow Over Innsmouth. Being genuinely strange is one of the best advantages to have in writing horror.

Plus it's hard to avoid finding out about his personal views when stories like The Rats in the Walls have shit like the hero's cat being named "Niggerman", or the big horrific twist in the story being that the hero has an ancestor from Africa.

I decided to watch the new Berserk anime. Damn, people weren't kidding about the animation. It's like it's robots moving, not natural humans
