How will the death of net neutrality affect online multiplayer games?
>>
Drives the jews crazy they can't completely control the internet, it'll never stop until they have domination
>>
no more Americans shitting up online can only be a good thing. Now if only we could get rid of the Brazillians and the Russians
>>
Old money and old power will always find a way to make things worse.

>>

Why even get rid of net neutrality? It seems rather vital.
>>
>>383048609
Comcast is paying congress/liberals support it so it must be bad.

Heh. Best of luck then.

It was this vs. allowing TPP to actively remove half the Internet/all online freedoms and basically all affordable drugs/products and consumer knowledge. Losing NN (if it even happens) is stupid but we had no other way out.

So ISP's can charge you extra for using Netflix.
>>
>>383049154
Depends on both the media/political climate and how much more you're willing to pay.

>It was this vs. allowing TPP to actively remove half the Internet/all online freedoms and basically all affordable drugs/products and consumer knowledge.
Why not neither?
>>
>>383046557
It will have zero impact.

The only impact it will have is on Netflix, because Comcast owns Hulu and will therefore will throttle Netflix streaming speeds to make Hulu a more attractive option.

No ISP gives two shits about which videogames you play, it's not worth their time to sniff packet sources and throttle accordingly for videogame data.

I was just on the phone with everybody's favorite internet service provider today. My bill went up to $130 and thats because I was on a promotion but they didn't tell me. I was like "i'm not fucking 70 years old so I don't need cable television or a home phone just give me the medium tier internet".

Back to the bargain price of 90 dollars a month with a 1 TB cap!

Fuck this shit.

>>
>>383049348
It will fuck everything.
Your ISP will be able to deny you access to many websites, hell, they'll probably lock everything outside of yahoo, youtube and reddit behind an additional fee; Sites such as Netflix, Crunchyroll etc will get fucked because cable/internet providers see them as direct competition.
Net neutrality is the only thing keeping schlomo from finding new and exciting ways to nickle and dime you.

>>
>>383049974
The point is that they could, but why WOULD they?

There's no advantage to throttling all of your service except for specific game data. What do they gain? Arguably they could use the threat of throttling to extort money from game publishers who wanted to avoid it, but that'd be terrible business because most couldn't pay.

If you throttle EVERYTHING, your internet service speed is just percieved as slower, and you lose business. It's only sensible to throttle one or two things, especially if those things rely on extremely high data speed, to promote alternatives (see: throttle Netflix to promote Hulu).

If there were an ISP that owned the CoD franchise, Overwatch fans would have reason to be alarmed. Otherwise, I see no business advantage to non-neutral treatment of game data.

Rail in America is shit because of airline lobbying
Internet is shit because of cable lobbying

It's fucking amazing that this is mostly because ISP's and cable providers just want more money, when simply providing a decent service will earn them that.

On May 16, 2018, Robert moved to a new city. He was excited to start his new job, and lay down roots in the community. He wasn't worried about losing connections to his old friends, because Robert would play games with them every thursday night. Robert arrived at his new house and called the only ISP that services his house, "BIG ISP Co." They sent a technician the next day to set up his Internet service.
"Okay, I've got your modem plugged in, now I just need to know what services you use." The tech looked down at his tablet and cleared his throat, preparing to read from a list. "Just stop me when you hear a service you would like to use." He began to read, "BIG Movies, BIG Music, BIG Storage."
"No, I don't use those, I didn't have BIG Internet at my last house." Robert replied, "I think it would be faster if I just gave you a list of what I plan to use."
"That might be a problem, especially if your services don't fit in a BIG Internet bundle we already offer."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, do you watch movies online from services like Netflix and Amazon Prime?"
"Yes, of course I do."
"Okay, we'll add the streaming movies package." The tech checked off a box, and the monthly price for Robert's quote got higher at the bottom of the his tablet. "What about television, do you catch up on missed episodes online?
"Yes, of course! I can't be around all the time when shows are on!"
"No problem. I'll add the streaming television package too." The tech checked another box, and Robert's quote got higher again. "How about music, you said you don't use BIG Music, do you want to listen to another internet radio service?"
"I have a ton of Spotify playlists! Pretty much one for every occasion."
"Okay, we'll need to add the Music Streaming package, then." Another box checked, another increase to Robert's monthly subscription cost. "Now, how about games, do you use BIG Games to play with friends?"

No, I connect with friends using Discord, and we play all sort of games."
"Discord, huh? VOIP service too, then." The tech scrolled through his list looking for VOIP services. He checked the box, and the quote got higher. "You play games from Steam?"
"Yes."
"Origin?"
"Yes."
"GoG?"
"Yes."
With each "yes," the price of Robert's monthly fee went up.
"Guild Wars?"
"Yes."
"Battle.net?"
"Yes."
"Star Citizen?"
"Yes."
"Candy Crush?"
"No. I don't play Candy Crush."
"Great, you're going to love the savings of not paying for Facebook games."
"I'm not so sure about that." Robert looked at the tablet. The long list of third party services had come with service charges that ballooned his rate to twice what he expected to pay. "My last service provider didn't charge me extra to use Netflix or Spotify or Steam. This seems like a racket!"
"Well, sir, you're welcome to use a competitor, then. LARGENET services the other side of town. I think their service charges are pretty much the same, so if you care about it so much, you're welcome to move. I won't keep you here."
"That's it, I can pay your fees or move?! Those are my only options?" Robert was incredulous. "This can't be legal!"
"Completely legal, sir. Net Neutrality is a thing of the past. I am a BIG ISP Co shareholder, and I would be furious if they weren't making all the money they could. LARGENET does it. GIANT CONNECT does it. We have to do it to compete!"
"Fine" Robert said, "lets just sign this thing."
"Hold your horses, Cowboy" The technician guffawed at the idea that he was finished. "We haven't even talked about your data cap yet."

Lack of checks and balances between government and business *coughJewscough* is the problem moreso than Capitalism itself.

Every system will have those attempting to abuse it. Some just allow it worse than others, i.e. a Marxist government with no restrictions or competition.

I lived in the US for a year, I know how shitty it is, but it's going to get a lot worse.
>>
>>383050489
IIIRC only 2ISP's can compete in any given area in the US, and those that sprout up are at the mercy of the big cable companies they rent line access from.
In majority of the US it's 1large company and 1super shitty but slightly less expensive alternative option.
>>
>>383049154
Comcast basically wants to play hardball with Google and Netflix. They represent over half of all internet bandwidth, and so ISPs can say, "hey, we're gonna throttle you unless you do what we want." The thing is, neither side can really play too hard. ISPs actually shitting on something massively popular would have a huge blowback, even as shitty as ISP selection is in the country. Simultaneously, Google/Netflix can't completely tell them to fuck off because even a little harm to their business is a ton of lost money. They HATE the idea of being forced to cooperate with anyone though, and so Google especially has spearheaded massive pushes towards net neutrality.

The reality is that even if you viewed ISPs as a serious problem, net neutrality doesn't actually solve anything. For example, Comcast started its own streaming service, obviously in competition with others. However, the data doesn't count against people's bandwidth quotes because it goes through lines reserved for cable TV. Net neutrality can't touch this. Meanwhile some cell phone providers offer music streaming that doesn't count against their consumer's data plans. Net neutrality can't do anything there either.

There are a million games they can play, and net neutrality is a solution looking for a problem while missing the ones actually present. It doesn't stop the near-monopoly granted to ISPs by local governments. It doesn't stop them from imposing stricter bandwidth caps to hurt Google/Netflix that way. All it does is give the federal government a little more of a foot into controlling it all. It would be better to decide right out of the gate if you want the government to have zero control of internet, or if you view it as a public good that has to be completely federally controlled. This in-between does no good.

Nobody lives in a place with only ISP anymore. It used to be true, but now (very nearly) everyone has a cell phone with satellite internet access. And even if your machine doesn't support tethering, you can go buy a USB LTE dongle and set it up for like, $90.

Your CABLE provider may have a monopoly, assuming you have no reasonable access to dish (or aren't lucky enough to have fiber). But that monopoly is also sanctioned by your local municipality, whose permission that provider requires since they have to drill up public land to access and maintain their infrastructure, and if you throttle granny's access to Recipes.com and Pinterest she'll vote you out next referendum, and the cable companies know it.

Fun aside: the FCC's official position on net neutrality does not and has never applied to mobile carriers. Ask yourself if all of the doomsaying nickel-and-dime web-filtered shit has been true of your mobile browsing experience.
>>
>>383051129

Because now they legally CAN DO IT. How do you not understand? They can legally restrict their own customers' access for additional fees and you really think big companies won't take the chance to add more fees? Shit like this is similar to paid online for each console now, before it was heinous to even think about someone like Nintendo charging for online. You give businesses an inch and they will charge you for every fraction of that inch because that's more profit. It's naive to think otherwise. It's just something else they can call a "premium service."

Because monopolies. One company builds and therefore owns the infrastructure of an entire city for example, so they can do what the fuck they want. Typically this means no maintenance, customer service of three poos in India and ripoff rates for absolute shit tier speed and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it short of moving somewhere else. Pretty much thet only time they upgrade the lines is when local government contracts them to do it (and therefore they're legally obliged to do it). It's living hell and free market fundamentalism at it's very best.

The Presidents are bought out by the banks, and Congress is bought out by lobbyists/legal and encouraged bribes from big businesses.

It leads to nothing but get rich now and damn the consequences. American democracy does not serve the people, and the people are powerless. Their vote does nothing.

Rail is shit in america because the government doesn't own the rails, the companies do. this doesn't mean other companies can't use their rails, they can, but the company that owns them gets priority so scheduling can be impossibly difficult. That along with pretty much no new rails ever being built due to just how expensive it is to build them, buy the land, permits, ect means America will probably never have a decent rail system. Even if they focused on it and dumped shittons of money getting it to a decent point would take decades.

>To use the analogy of a public water main, Spectrum promised customers gallons of water and then knowingly leased them a faucet that was only able to produce drops at a time.

>But Schneiderman goes further. He states that Spectrum also refused to upgrade the water main itself during a period of heavy demand. It did so in order to negotiate higher fees with the owners of the water source — in this case Netflix and Riot Games — as well as the owner of the larger water system, internet backbone provider Cogent.

>“[Spectrum] deliberately took advantage of its control over port capacity where its network connected to online content providers to extract more revenue for the company,” states Schneiderman’s complaint. “To do so, [Spectrum] used its leverage over access to subscribers to extract fees from online content providers in exchange for granting such access.”

>Once Netflix and Riot Games agreed to pay Spectrum for access to its customers, performance improved. Meanwhile, it took the FCC’s Open Internet Order to solve the issues between Spectrum and Cogent.

>“[Spectrum] lined its pockets by intentionally creating bottlenecks in its connections with online content providers, despite knowing that these negotiating tactics would create problems for its subscribers in accessing online content.”

>As proof of its fraudulent business practices, Schneiderman points to a specific program by the FCC to install monitoring hardware inside Spectrum customer’s homes. The devices used commonly available online services, like Speedtest.net, to keep tabs on the quality of consumer internet connections. When a portion of those tests reflected negatively on Spectrum, the OAG claims the company boosted only those customer’s connections in a direct attempt to fool the FCC.

Privately maintained, publicly owned. It's fucking stupid to use eminent domain to take private owners land and give it to another private owner.

Cable companies aren't making money because home phone services are redundant in a world where everyone owns a cell phone (And half of your calls are markets anyway) and cable TV is also on its way out.

So they want to be able to charge you extra based on HOW you use your internet rather than a flat rate.

It's less about them charging you extra for porn (Though they might) and more about them knowing you're looking at porn in the first place.

If net neutrality is gone any ISP could block any service in its bandwidth. They could upsell special packages to charge you separately to access to different sitea. One for social media one for videogames, one for video, one for music. Republicans say idea is that instead there would be a free market with more options, this of course won't happen because it's not like Comcast is gonna roll over and let a smaller ISP come in and take their territory.

Either the people responsible for this are retarded or want a worldwide conflict to ensue, because that's going to happen. When Americans have their internet censored there will be riots. >Retards falling for Google's trickery
Okay, first of all, this whole shit is not going to lead to your web history, address and shit like that being sold, that shit is already protected regardless if this whole thing passes or not.

Second of all, that thing you're so concerned about them "Removing"? It's not even in fucking effect you turboretards, companies already can sell INFORMATION.

The keyword here is INFORMATION, as in the same fucking information I deal on a daily basis with my job regarding Google Adwords and shit. Nothing personal will be seen because it's of no interest to anyone. The data that is sold is "X amount of people like/are interested in Y", that's pretty much it. No one wants or needs more information than that.

Third of all, you can opt out by just asking your ISP, they are obligated by law to let you opt out.

Fourth of all, why I said you're falling for Google's trickery. This whole thing essentially allows ISPs to do the exact same thing Google has been doing for years, except the statistics would be more accurate. As in ISPs, assuming they'd even dare despite the fear of blowback from consumers, being a potential actual threat to Google's services regarding ads and statistics. Of course Google wants to "Save" this, they are probably funding a lot of shit just to fuel up the resistance because it could be an end to what is essential a monopoly.

And you fucks are falling head over heels over it because you don't understand anything and fall for the "THEY SELL YOUR BROWSER HISTORY" meme.

Well some people have, with varying degrees of seriousness, suggested that the internet was a mistake. Given everything that's happened in the past couple of years, I'm slowly starting to think there might be some truth there. As difficult as it is for me to admit, I have to say that it seems the vast majority of people, even relatively intelligent people, are much more vulnerable to confirmation bias than any of us could've anticipated. Which is to say, the early internet has shown us that, left purely to their own devices, people will inevitably create horrible echo chambers full of made up nonsense completely divorced from reality. At least in the muddied milieu of polite society, there was SOME kind of obligation for compromise and common ground, but on the internet you're completely free to spout your one-sided lunacy and people are completely free to believe you.

In other words, filtering or "censorship" is inevitable. Even your own sensory experiences are just a patchwork of loose impressions largely filled in by autonomic functions in your brain. Trying to pretend you can stop or escape it is no different than thinking you can successfully illegalize drug use.

Mainly because I've actually read about it and have some understanding about it ontop of working with statistics and ads online through Google services.

I'm somewhat certain Google is behind a lot of the uprise against Net Neutrality honestly, or at least behind the "They sell your web history" meme which is a complete lie and makes me wonder who came up with it if not someone that has a financial interest in it. Of course, people will still keep insisting this is something it's not because they can't be bothered to actually read into detail what it's about and how it works.

A legitimate reason to be against this would for example be to be pissed about ISPs potentially earning money off you without you getting anything for it
>>
>>383056265
>"THEY SELL YOUR BROWSER HISTORY"

I've never heard that as a fear. I've mainly seen complaints about increased payments, cable-esque web selection packages and bandwidth throttling (which allegedly they can already do to a degree, along with non-Internet cabling).

Not to defend Eisenberg & Friends since any major media "Issue" is always backed by ulterior motives one or both ways, but this just sounds like consumers are gonna get screwed either way. Either short-term by Comcast or long-term by FB/Google.

>>
>>383052576
it's basically an argument about "who pays."

ISPs want to be able to charge Google/Netflix extra for hogging their bandwidth. Google/Netflix of course think they should pay the ISPs the same amount as some bumfuck's blog that gets 12 hits a month. It all started because of Netflix trying to force comcast to use their machines so they could be "streamlined," and they've been throwing a bitchfit about "equal treatment" ever since Comcast said "no we're not going to prioritize your servers over anyone elses."

Google/Netflix have a more vocal influence on the internet than Comcast so they're going to frame it like the stupid reddit image where you have to pay for different website packages like tv packages.

>>383057207
I'm beginning to think this more and more. I obsessively question my beliefs, and I always find so many holes. I don't know what I stand for, and I probably never will.

In this instance it pretty much boils down to "do you want the government or corporations to have control over the internet". The answer of course is "no", but which one do you pick?
>>
>>383055719
Right now your monthly bill is tied to what they can get away with charging the average subscriber. If they can nickel and dime for individual things like specific websites or gaming, they can charge you more and the average Joe will still pay the same amount because as you said, if they could charge him more they would. He might just cancel the subscription, but are you really gonna go without internet? In areas with only one isp you're at their mercy. Today they can try to squeeze more out of you by trying to sell you more expensive packages but without nn it would be easier to nickel and dime individual customers. Also this is really about the long game. The internet is still pretty young and if they can set this precedent now, who knows what things will be like in 50 years.

Are you retarded? Net neutrality has nothing to do with fucking Google, it's about stopping ISPs from being biased in favor of or against specific sites. If anything Google would benefit from such a system because they could bribe an ISP (eg Comcast) to favor Google and throttle every other search engine, likewise for GMail, YouTube, etc. They have the pockets.

They're the new guy, they benefit from net neutrality until they have a large enough marketshare to benefit from getting rid of it.

The Internet might as well be classified as a human right, access to the global information network should never be restricted, especially not by private enterprise.
Anyone who doesn't support net neutrality is a cuck of the highest degree, in a world where information isn't free, neither is anyone.

all bits should NOT be treated equal. If we continue the shitty 'the internet should be treated like the road system' meme, we could say that giving priority bandwidth to some internet packets over others is silly- it's as stupid as saying that we should let semis and ambulances run at the identical speeds at all times, even in residential areas. The problem is that if you force the ISPs to treat every internet pack equally, the only knew way for ISPs to handle that is by buying more hardware, and you're going to pay for it.

>I don't blame them for just giving up entirely when you've been unable to set up your planned business for years.

Any new ISP gets creamed by the established ones in lots of ways, all of which absurd. One is by an ISP filing false claims against a new one saying they're digging up our lines/fucked with our lines/etc. It doesn't matter if it's true or not, the accused has to fork out money to defend themselves constantly
>>
>>383055867
conservatives have always been the only ones advocating to end net neutrality because thats what their politicians tell them to because thats what the people "donating" money to the politicians are telling them to do
>>
>>383062013
Net neutrality isn't total government control. It's no more invasive than the truth in labelling/advertising statutes. All it does is prevent monopolistic exploitation of the internet.

Because data caps aren't a think no sir. Never underestimate just how fucking far people allow themselves to get fucked before they bite back. ISP's could go so far to only allow like 4 sites and people would still pay for it despite all the complaints. People are that lazy and spineless.

Why are you framing this like preventing the government from taking control of something, when in reality it's something they made and have always had control over?
>>
>>383062369
Neither of them have any ability to exert monopolistic exploitation of the internet, but the ISPs do, since they can literally decide who gets to conduct business on the internet, which was the problem we've seen previously with ISPs throttling netflix traffic in order to make their own competing services look superior.

>>383062376

oh no they cant because the government gave total control of infrastructure to Verizon and Comcast.

Best outcome: status quo remains, if your ISP tries to throttle your internet access in favor of google/FB there will be a competing ISP that does not do this which will reap the profits. If all the ISPs co-operate in dicking over the users they're a acting as a cartel which is illegal. There, done.

>f all the ISPs co-operate in dicking over the users they're a acting as a cartel which is illegal

>>
>>383056304
They would do it because very few people in the US would have any other choice but to bend over and pay the extra cash

Do you really think Comcast and every other company would pass up an opportunity to squeeze more money out of the common man?

It's like free market fags never read about mill towns and factory currency

Business owners would have us all as literal slaves if it weren't for government regulations and protections, because they did it before those were implemented.

>>
>>383062013
I don't think you understand what Net Neutrality is.

Internet Neutrality means it's impossible for ISPs to prioritize certain traffic above certain other traffic. Something that, up to this point, has been heavily frowned upon. While not officially on the books, net neutrality has always been an unspoken principle of the internet.

If internet neutrality goes away, that means there's nothing stopping ISPs from making it as difficult as they want, if not downright impossible, to go to websites that the ISPs themselves don't approve of.
The "Cable package" comparison has precedent; that's LITERALLY what happened to television stations in the 1980s, and to television and radio in the 1940s and 50s. Broadcast networks started demanding fees, smaller stations couldn't pay, they went away while the stations backed by large corporations stuck around and only got larger.
The exact same thing will happen to the internet, if net neutrality goes away.
And anyone who thinks 4chan is struggling financially as it stands, now. No way in hell will it be able to stand up to large, corporately owned traffic.

>If all the ISPs co-operate in dicking over the users they're a acting as a cartel which is illegal.
That has never stopped them before. Half the government at this point is already made up of old Comcast and Verizon people anyways.
>>
>>383062643
1. Internet congestion doesn't work that way.
2. They weren't making actual listed speeds on packages before netflix grew to what it is, and they almost NEVER provide exact advertised speeds.
3. This is a colossal conflict of interests in terms of market fairness and control when the company that is throttling netflix is not throttling their own sites that are competition to netflix.

It's like if you owned a farm that grew food everyone wanted, and another guy owned a farm that made worse food, but was also given money by the town to build the road in to town, so he decides to block your end of the road so only his food can be sold in town.

Big ISPs love regulations, you moron. They lobby for that shit so it kills their smaller competitors.

No competition = Monopoly
>>
>>383062775
The government gave billions of dollars to ISPs so they could upgrade the infrastructure to fiber. Guess what the ISPs did with that money?
Pocketed it all as profit, of course.
>>
>>383062896
>there will be a competing ISP that does not do this which will reap the profits
Except it's literally impossible because of lobbied legislation for new ISPs to form in a huge area of the united states because they won't be legally allowed to lay line.

In places where they can form, the difficulty in being approved to be able to lay line is so intense that you'd need to throw literally billions of dollars at it to make minor progress.

Did you ever wonder why huge chunks of the united states have ONE ISP, and almost every other area has only one real ISP and several smaller ones that can only provide an incredibly small fraction of that service?
>>
>>383063324
>YOU want to have government come in

Yes, that's why the big ISPs are lobbying against regulations
>>
>>383063572

>>
This wouldn't be a problem if they forced ISPs to break up so that no ISP also owns things like streaming services, cable channels, media sites, etc.

You can't have someone own the line AND have businesses that use the line (even though the american taxpayers paid for it) without there being favoritism.
>>
>>383063596
>new rules in that benefit big ISPs
and what are these new rules
>>
>>383063612
*lobbying for regulations

Regulations only hurt smaller competitors. Giant corporations can afford to hire lawyers to manage the red tape. ISPs would prefer to have regulations over competitors.
