From what's seen of the game, it looks like the boxes have wonky hit detection. In the original trilogy you can bounce off a box from the tips of Crash's toes, but now it seems like you have to have your feet completely on top of them.

Can anyone confirm this?

Yeah that's what I meant. I've been watching some gameplay of the game and have seen plenty of instances where I was sure the person playing should have bounced off a box in a bonus stage or something, but they fell into a pit and died.

It's really turning me off from buying the game.

It's because the player hitbox is a pill shape instead of rectangular due to rectangular hitboxes have issues sliding across planes, at least in Unity. While this means there is a possibility that you will slide off something if you're at the very edge, it also means you retain the ability to jump and maneuver as you slide off. Just adapt a little and you'll be fine. High Road is harder more because of the jumping physics actually having momentum like in 2 and 3 instead of the flat acceleration of 1.
