I would argue DS as it took far more risks and has a huge library of experimental games, some bad some fantastic (like Ghost Trick) whereas the 3DS was pretty safe in comparison. You can also play the huge library of GBA games on the DS with a fantastic backlight meanwhile DS games on the 3DS suffer badly with scaling issues.

3DS has native GBA and GB emulation. There's is seriously no reason to buy a DS now if you want piracy since a 3DS can do everything a DS can.

Interchangable faceplates and the white color along with the colored buttons gives it the Super Famicom look which gives it that nostalgic look. I have a Standard model New 3DS with the Monster Hunter faceplates and it looks badass with the SFC color scheme.
