I disagree that is horrible. Not everyone translated perfectly, but some got a much needed redraw (King, Benimaru, Kensou, Chin.) What I liked the most about XIIIs style is that characters finally had much more distinctive sizes and silhouettes. In the old versions, as beautiful as they are, the body sizes of most men were interchangeable. IN XVIII you understand the difference in power and fighting style between Beni and Clark.
XIV would be acceptable if the models were ok. Even with all the patches, the new Kyo is a disgrace, just point one out.

Start smaller than you think, no bigger than 32x32, and restrict your palette. Err on the side of more contrast with your palette, don't pillow shade, and always seek input. The pixeljoint tutorial that got posted is a great start
For programs I recommend Aseprite, but that costs money so you'll probably want to start with Graphics Gale, just in case you drop this because you're convinced being an idea guy is actually an important role

As for the run I have an extra midair frame in game, and I'm actually pretty happy with how it looks in game so maybe that helped a lot. I used Eadweard Muybridge images as a reference so I'm sort of confident in their accuracy

it's like a painting except it also activates your nostalgia for old videogames. that's why you like it. paintings and drawings are better than photographs because they represent idealized versions of things. they also limit their palette to create more harmonious blends of color than what is actually found in reality. the composition of the picture can also be played with more than in a real photograph. it's good, in short, because of the control the artist can exercise over the various elements. real buildings aren't purely aesthetic art pieces so they can't afford this level of control to an artist usually. and even if they could there's still that issue of color and composition.

It kinda bugs me that a lot of people dismiss ESA as "shitty looking" when it's outright impressive how much background detail it gets in with its low-res sprites. It's fucking great. Makes for a good sense of scale when big enemies show up, too.
I feel like a lot of people brush off really nice looking games like Kero Blaster or ESA or VVVVVV just because they see Metal Slug as the end-all-be-all of good pixel art (not that MS is bad, or anything) when Metal Slug is just a really good example of what you can pull off with higher-res pixel art, like OwlboyThough Owboy is a shit fucking gameand use that to judge the art of every pixel art game when most of them art definitely not going for something like that.

It gives you infinite flight, which sounds cool until you realize that the game never takes advantages of it with good bosses and fun, frantic flight sections, instead opting for basically "Zelda dungeons but less fun".
The main charcater can't deal damage, he can only stun enemies and reflect projectiles. Only the people he's carrying have actual guns. This sounds interesting until you realize that there's no penalty for carrying people and you have an item that literally teleports them into your hands, so it's exactly the same as having weapons to swap between with your mousewheel or whatever. This could be almost okay if the game went for twinstick shooter styled design. Once again, it instead opts for mediocre Zelda-like dungeons, including dumb forced "if you get seen you go back to the start and lose health" stealth sections. It does that at least twice.
The story is a fucking mess and I can't sum up why it's so terrible in a single post, so I'm not going to try. The best way I could sum it up is "Baation's story but exponentially more terrible and also you're locked into the bad ending along with killing Zulf but instead of Zulf it's yourself".

No, because it's incredibly low effort. Animations tend to be no more than 2 or 3 frames max and detail is kept to a minimum because the artist wasn't capable of anything more. VVVVVV looks like shit because the C64 games it's emulating mostly look like shit. It is very accurately imitating an ugly-ass art style that has no detail, no character, and no animation. Kero Blaster has effort put into it, it has unique assets made for specific parts of the story and the characters all have a real sense of personality. Those dialogue boxes alone have more personality than every art asset in VVVVVV put together. In VVVVVV, the gag is that every one of the characters is completely indistinguishable from each other because so little effort went into the art. Even fucking Fantasy World Dizzy had more personality in its characters and that game is abysmal.
The main thing that drives me nuts about ESA is how fucking derivative it is. It just takes metroid assets and shrinks them. Kero Blaster is a fairly original take on an action platformer with unique characters and a distinct style. ESA is a metroid fan game with the serial numbers filed off, and not even a high effort metroid fan game (speaking about the visuals purely, the gameplay is fine in ESA, though the difficulty curve is terrible).
KB is not an amazing looking game, but I think it stands head and shoulders above VVVVVV and ESA.

I lost interest during the weird fungus boss or whatever it was on a derelict ship if I remember right, think it was about halfway through probably. Half the boss fights were massive difficulty spikes out of nowhere and then the game would become way easier after them, that's a bad difficulty curve. They were doable, but it wasn't really all that enjoyable.
Nearly every movement mechanic in ESA is a riff on some metroid ability. The primary one being the grapple beam (albeit I like ESA's implementation far more than Super Metroid's).

I agree that La-Mulana is far more ambitious, anon, but you didn't even get halfway through ESA. The game goes up to over 200% completion on your save file, man. There's like 5 endings.
Also, most of ESA's bosses aren't that hard once you get the pattern down. It's the same deal as La-Mulana, or Momodora 4, or Hollow Knight.
Of course, after Ending 1, the difficulty is less from the bossfights and more from the puzzlessince you get infinite flight and permacharged shots, as well as increased movement speed if you find the bikethan the bosses, which is why I compared it to La-Mulana to begin with.
As for VVVVVV, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on that.

Oh I believe you, I was enjoying ESA. I just lost interest because the boss fights were so out of tune with the rest of the game that it felt like I went from playing Super Metroid to Alien Soldier or something. Been playing Hollow Knight recently as well and that game's difficulty curve is so much smoother it's not even funny, even though it's bosses can be decently challenging too. (fuck some of those dream bosses though)
I fairly easily got past that Plant Boss that supposedly weeds out most of the people who can't handle the difficulty. But that yellow fungus alien thing, whatever it was, was just not fun, it was tedious, long and difficult.
