Thanks for the notice. It looks like you need to go onto the eShop store in order to download the v1.3 update (just search "Blaster Master") and then you can find her in under Extras, and in DLC. And yep, Shantae is free, just like the older characters were when they first came out.

I'm not sure if I'm going to be giving her a try yet (I still haven't finished my Ekoro run, nor my 100% attempt) but it's nice to have her on there.

It's not bad. Honestly, the Gunvolt character was the most interesting character from the first two, since you could run around outside the tank and he was interesting to use in the dungeons. Ekoro just fell too much like the base game to really matter much.

The game is a lot more linear than something like Goonies II was (or Symphony of the Night, if you prefer) but it still involved running around each area, figuring your way around to get through. If you're looking for a platforming exploration game, then sure, there aren't too many new ones these days.

There are some fairly large and significant changes to BMZero which make it different from the NES title. Namely, the NES title was intended to be played in once sitting, so there were some things (like enemies zipping from off screen and weapon depowerment) which could absolutely screw a player, with the idea that the player would learn from that and get better on their next playthrough. This is also why the gave featured the absurdly useful wave gun, and why enemies were stunned: they were dangerous, so if you were good enough to get that wave gun, it was a reward to take out enemies quickly.

Blaster Master Zero is a much more modern take on the idea. As such, you have save points instead of intending to finish the game in one push. There are no more cheap enemies zipping onto the screen, and so it is far easier to hold onto the powerful gun at nearly all times. On the other hand, they did have a lot of new gun types added, like the flamethrower which melts ice obstacles which wasn't in the original. They also changed the map screen around a bit, although in this case they made it less maze-like than in the NES version.

And then the new game added a hard mode, which meant that everything takes a shitload of damage and so won't get murdered while it's stunned. I'm not too sure how I feel about that.
