You weren't kidding. I stopped by Microcenter with a friend to look at headphones and wanted to see how bad it was. The AMD cards were gone, they had some Nvidia but it was expensive. I thought I'd snap a pic of this price bit. Glad I upgraded last year.
>>
Does it affect weaker cards? Like 1050 for example

>>
We just have to wait, eventually it won't be profitable anymore.
>>
>>382998996
1050ti still seems to be around $150/$160 so not really. The cards most affected are 1060, 480, 580, and 1070.
>>
>>382998996
The 1050 was priced around 150 I believe, they were the Zotec/EVGA cards though. They aren't as profitable because they don't produce a good energy to performance ratio.

>SAN FRANCISCO — Suspension of production at a Taiwanese DRAM fab owned by Micron Technology will further disrupt an already tight global DRAM supply situation and lead to price increases, according to a market watcher.

>Micron (Boise, Idaho) suspended operation of Micron Technology Taiwan's Fab 2 in Taiwan's Taoyuan City July 1 due to a malfunctioning nitrogen gas dispensing system, which led to the contamination of wafers and equipment. DRAMeXchange, a market research firm which tracks memory pricing, said it estimates that Inotera suffered a production capacity loss of about 60,000 wafer starts per month.

>DRAMeXchange estimates that the disruption will cut about 5.5 percent of the world's global DRAM capacity in July

>mfw I don't know if I should sell my 480 for $400 or not

I'd have to replace it with a 1050 Ti so I'd only have $250 left to spend on other shit. I'm NEET so I would have plenty of time to get both a PS3 w/ e3 flasher to hack and a New 3DS to hack and increase my backlog exponentially.

Ethereum values went up, certain AMD cards are great for mining it, all the cryptoshits buy all the AMD GPUs, AMD cards are in high demand but very low supply, now their prices skyrocket and even used RX 480's are going for $400 - $450.
>>

The 1050ti can play literally everything at 1080p on ultra settings, maybe drop one or two settings to high at most and go easy on AA.

Tell me about it, my 11 year old PC abruptly died like a week ago when the processor shit the bed with no easy options to replace it I'd have to build a whole new system. But when I went to upgrade all the mid tier cards were either sold out or $600-800.

I ended up getting a 1080ti, which was basically the same price as a 1070 right now.

4k is a meme.
1440p is the perfect resolution, and even 1080p is perfectly fine.
A 1080 Ti only running 1080p will be future proof for many years.
>>

I thought it wasn't worth the electricity cost it'd take to run it.
>>
>>383000912

It actually is 4k, it even says HDMI4K60 right there, I'm just running it in 1080/60 when I'm not in games.

4k is just a pain in the ass most of the time, makes shit hard to read unless you want to fuck with text scaling which not every application deals with well. I only crank it up to 4k when I'm playing games but even then the benefits of 4k are actually kinda minimal.

That's not even the biggest problem. Coins like ZCash. Monero and ETH are very profitable to mine and hold some value outside of speculation and short term gains. There's two problems with mining however, 1. Most coins these days are either migrating or being made as PoS instead of PoW 2. As more people mine a coin, the more difficult it gets to earn money with said coin. This is what happened with BTC and it's why it's impossible to profit mining BTC if you do not own 100000000 GPUs

Bitcoins aren't generated by mining. Mining is to ensure that bitcoin transactions and the BTC network run smoothly. See https://www.bitcoinmining.com/

Bitcoins are a currency, and ultimately at this point, they are a store of value just like gold but superior to gold in every way in that respect because they are infinitely divisible, unchanging supply, and easily transferable. There are also a lot of crypto algorithms in play to make sure that anyone wishing to try and "counterfeit" bitcoins needs to essentially put in a huge amount of funds proportional to at least 51% of the total mining hardware wealth, which is a lot. Because of that, it has value, arguably a much higher value than gold could ever have due to physical limitations of it.

Crypto mining is basically a verification of a transaction. When you send bitcoins to another wallet, the network will basically verify that your bitcoins are real and the transaction is real. Miners then get a reward at random, proportional to how powerful your hardware is, for doing this to incentivize it, though that reward gets harder and harder to "earn" as more and more hardware gets dedicated to the coin. Miners also get transaction fees paid to them for verifying certain transactions. Transactions with a higher fee get prioritized over ones with a lower fee.

You should look first into an SSD if you don't already have one, which is a major performance boost for everything on your system. Then you should look to get at least 16 GB of RAM. Both of these will give you a much bigger noticeable performance boost for the same amount.

That's a pretty nice explanation anon, thanks. I always imagined something like the Chinese Runescape gold miners who destroyed that economy too.

It's this. Crypto farming is a total meme. DRAM shortage is an actual thing.
>>
>>383023375
its too late anon, now the best is to wait untill this shithole implodes, and then you will have cards for coins.
>>
>>383023375
Crypto mining is happening, bubble will probably burst soon and you'll be able to grab 1060s/1070s for the cheap on craigslist or similar.

Or you can just check nowinstock . net and there are still cards available of every type.
>>
>>382999651
wasn't it taiwan that got its harddrive factories flooded at some point recently and for a while we had to pay insane prices for shitty harddrives?
>>
>>383023440
Crypto farming is not a meme, a lot of people bought into the Ethereum and similar mining meme, that's evidenced by the extremely high hash rate on those coins, all of which must be GPUs since ASICs are much more difficult to make for Ethereum like coins due to it being a memory bottleneck rather than processing bottleneck'd.
>>
>>382998882

>>
>>383024186
fuck off
>>
>>383023440
>>383023871
That being said, I'm sure it doesn't help the price at all and manufacturers are probably desperately trying to meet demand, and can't, without paying out the ass for DRAM.

>>383023946
If the supply of a product stays the same but demand increases a lot, price will go up. By raising the price, buyers, aka demand, will go down and begin to match the supply, maximizing profit. But if you raise the price too much, demand then drops to less than the supply, and you lose money because you have unsold supply.

They wouldn't be half working, but they may die much sooner on you, especially if they have been overvolted.

Luckily, the recent crypto craze is a memory bottleneck and memory is not too hard to OC and in fact, most people will undervolt cards since most of the power in a GPU goes to the processor, which is hardly used in this case.

So the only people that actually see a profit are the chinks with giant farms?

Buying into this with something like 10 GPUs seems like a gigantic waste unless you're there right at the start, which most aren't.

Who do cryptocurrencies even work? What backs their value? How does spending time calculating nothing somehow generate monetary worth?
>>
>>383025774
The images of chinks and their farms are that of ASIC miners, which is only bitcoin and litecoin, and they consume an asston of power, of which yes, it's only profitable in China because they literally steal electricity off the powergrid.

Ethereum and similar are currently only GPU based and take much less energy to mine by default. Sure the chinks are still at an advantage but that doesn't mean it isn't still profitable to do.

yes, basically only people with dedicated rigs will profit
the most profit is made by people at the start - I made 3 BTC mining dogecoin with a Radeon 5500 simply because I had the luck to be on /g/ when it launched. At that time the difficulty was very low, so I could get an immense amount of doge/day even when using a shit card. I got a 7950 a month later (4 times more powerful than the 5500) and didn't even make 1 BTC mining with it because at that point doge was way more saturated.

It's just supply and demand. Gold has a value simply because we say it does. Hell, the USD isn't backed by anything, it's just accepted by pretty much anyone, so that's it's worth right there.

A currencies worth is in how usable it is as a currency, which is ultimately a measure of it's supply and how much GDP you are able to buy with it. The USD is worth what it's worth because you can buy a lot of things pretty much anywhere with it.

The time spent calculating nothing ensures that no one can counterfeit the cryptocurrency without investing more funds than they would ever gain back.

>>
>>383026640
You also have the chance that a GPU straight from the manufacturer dies a week after you turn it on. There is no guarantee that a card used for mining will die sooner or not, just an increased risk. It's all a risk, the only question that matters though is if taking that risk is worth it. When you see 2 1070s for the price of one new one or even less then that risk potentially becomes very much worth it.

>>
>>383027848
mining is making your GPU do lots of calculations to generate this cryptocurrency. For the most part, it's not advisable due to extreme amounts of wear and tear on the hardware as well as electricity costs for keeping it running 24/7.
>>
>>383027848
1. Buying high demand/low stock goods and reselling them for a profit

2. Mining is part of cryptocurrencies, it's when you have a system dedicated to checking transactions and in return you get some of the currency
>>
>>383028006
the only one not affected by this that could also be considered an upgrade is the 1050ti, but even that is a relatively minor upgrade

I have the same card and I'm holding off on buying anything till dedicated mining cards come out or this bubble bursts

If you think you can profit on crypto then you're fine, if you think crypto will change the world then you're a nutter. I'm in the former but I don't mine. I just buy and sell GPUs to retards and make more fast easy money than them.
