It opened up the gameplay with more involved systems and fuller, more lively environments, better guard AI, balanced survival elements that added challenge without frustration. The open design of the areas gives you a variety of approaches, all equally valid.

Truth be told, in my heart I see 1-4 equally, but I can recognize that 3 is probably the "best."

If you're in it purely for the gameplay, either Re:coded on DS or 2.8 on PS4 (specifically 0.2). The latter is only like two hours long though so probably not worth the money just to play that.

If you're like, trying to catch up before KHIII, you're gonna have to play them all.

1.5+2.5 is four games for $40, and they've patched nearly all of the problems out so it's a pretty solid package.
It also includes KHII Final Mix which I assume you haven't played, and you absolutely should.
