Kamari on my original PS2 playthrough was garbage. I don't know what I did this time around on PC, but that dude has literally taken over the entire board long before anyone else has. In fact it's also why I tend to get bored of the game. It's unfortunate how samey everyone starts to feel eventually.

Only to a certain extent. I mean certain characters are obviously more proficient in certain areas than others. You wouldn't have Yuna, even if she had a maxed out grid, to do physical damage like you would Auron, Tidus or Wakka. The only ones I'd agree feel that way is all the male characters because they're all best for your high damage attacks.

They got promoted to higher positions or left the industry. Average career in vidya is preposterously short. In order to cut budgets for HD gaming which Japanese companies took a major hit in producing they most likely don't pay the people that filled those roles the same as the ones from before.

Some gba games had really great spritework, same as ds and psp but not as much. While rare some indie games really do have great pixelart, I haven't played but owlboy genuinely looks great.

During the late 90's games were criticized for using pixel art as they were considered "lazy" for not using the new 3d capable hardware. Ironic now of course considering only 2d games from that era really hav aged well visually.

You can start with EO3 and SMT3 since they're both good entry points, have no relation to previous entries and the mechanics are solidified enough that you know what to expect from the games that came after them in the series

Here's a list I made for a precious anon.

BoFI: Snes original. The script was handled by Squaresoft when they they were still under that title, they also published it. My theory is they were trying to push jrpgs in the West and thought a jrpg with capcom's name attached would sell. Unfortunately it didn't pay off. This script is your typical 90's jrpg script with some weird lines here and there but it's okay. The gba port is basically the same game but easier and suffers from saturated colors, worse sound, and a smaller screen size.

BoFII: Snes version with the retranslation patch. Capcom decided to publish the game and when doing so they also did the script. The English script for BoFII is notoriously bad and considered by many one of the worst localizations ever made. The Snes version has a patch however with a more accurate script. The gba port uses the same awful script as the snes one as well as suffers from the problems listed above for BoFI.

BoFIII: Go for the ps1 version. The psp port isn't terrible or anything but it is worse. The one thing it has over the ps1 version is that more instruments are used meaning better sound. however it also has edited or removed scenes and slowdown problems.

BoFIV: Your only real option is the ps1 version. There does exist a pc port but it is basically the exact same game but fitted to use keyboard controls and for some reason has a different font.

Start with III then go to IV. I and II are kind of debatable, they're a bit dull but look into them. BofV is a solid game but very unconventional game, look into it as well. Great series, BoFIV is one of my favorite games ever created.

I was being hyperbolic on purpose, I do know that there are exceptions to all trends in any genre of any medium. That said, I do think that the standard tropes of turn based rpgs are pretty widely practiced and that once you understand what they are they ruin the thrill of leveling up and learning more powerful moves. I've played quite a few, and while it is nice that there are exceptions, most rpgs in general rely on grinding as a means to pad out the gameplay so people feel they got their moneys worth. Not that much different than fetch quests. I'll check those out though, thanks for the rec.

Yea, honestly it's been a long time since I played any rpg with leveling up as a central mechanic and really enjoyed it. I liked Dark Souls because the real time mechanics are challenging and fun, and Botw too, but turn based combat with level systems really are kind of shallow by and large. Glad some people recommended some exceptions though, it'd be nice to find one I liked for nostalgia's sake.
