There's nothing artificial about it. It doesn't throw any curveballs, it demands you not be shit at timing jumps.
>>
>>382943239
this. modern games hand hold to the extreme. is it any surprise /v/ is screaming about how "hard" crash is?

What even is the gimmick? I can't tell when planks will break or not. Some of the red planks seem to break if you stand on them for too long, others break the second you touch them and I just instantly fall to my death with no idea why.
>>
>>382943112
Because the maximum shilling
>>
>>382943527
I think it's as difficult of dark souls. The darksouls of platformers i guess
>>
>>382943527
Lighter colored planks don't break, red breaks after a while, cracked red breaks instantly.

the ones broken in the middle break immediately and cannot be jumped on. The solid red planks stay for a few seconds
>>
You can walk on the rope on the right side pretty easily. Made that level pretty quick
>>

A term salty pcfags started using when dark souls came to the platform.

Its when you make a game hard by having purposefully bad mechanics
>>
>>382949683
"Bad mechanics" meaning "It's not how I want it to be".
>>
>capsule collision box instead of cube like original
That explains all the weird sliding off edges of platforms.
>>
>>382949683
I honestly think the Crash mechanics were an oversight, so by your definition it doesn't have artificial difficulty because the things that make it weren't intended
>>
>>382950078
>>382950448

I'm not even saying Crash is hard. The guy asked for the definition of artificial difficulty and I gave it to him. Superman 64 has artificial difficulty because the game is hard due to bugs and exact timings
>>
>>382943003

I'm starting to think that Crash 2's bullshit parts are worse than anything Crash 1 throws at you. Stuff like the Piston It Away/Cold Hard Crash gems, the occasional bonus stage or some of those obscure as fuck secret exits. On average it's easier but its spikes are worse than Crash 1's IMO.
>>
>Reach Road to Nowhere
>Get vivid flashbacks as a child. Everytime I would game over on that level, I would always have to retry the previous level again as well.
>Could never beat it
>Now about to try it
>Remember people talking about how you can "walk on the ropes"
>Decide to try it not expecting it to work
>Get shocked when it works

Beat the level without touch a board once or losing a single life, man I was a dumb as shit kid.
>>
>>382943003
Is it a joke that people pretend to not know what artificial difficulty is or do people honestly not know at this point?

It's that weird stick figure comic where someone starts acting retarded as a joke but then everyone acts retarded and it turns out that it's just accepted now and the widespread norm.
>>
>>382951075
Shame the rope trick is finicky on the remake. You have to keep jumping otherwise you risk slipping off.

Also, anyone know how you activate those clear platforms on some levels? Seems like I need them to 100% the crates for the areas that use them.
>>
>>382951075

It's also not that bad if you use the D-Pad. It's a goddamn nightmare if you use the analog stick though, and the ropes in the remaster are much more slippery than in the original.
>>
>>382944919
It's a term used by people to describe difficulty they don't like.

There are a few red platforms near the end that with break instantly if you step on them. They are a trap. You have to stay on the turtles.
>>
I always found "artificial difficulty" to mean a game where luck decides when you beat it, and not your own skill.

The biggest and near only example I have found for this is the Chocobo Balloon Race Challenge from Final Fantasy X, trying to end it at 0.0. You can be the best, most skilled player of that minigame in the world, but the balloon locations are randomly generated. So, you can start the race being the best in the world at it, and the game places all the balloons in places where you will get hit everytime. Then you reach the end after playing perfectly, and fail because the balloon locations made you get hit too much. That can be considered artificial difficulty, you play until the game decides to let you win by way of balloon placement.

Stopped reading there, wasn't finicky for me at all, ran all the way to the end only jumping when jumping to the next rope, watching my footing the whole time and adjusting as needed. Didn't fall off, not once. Sorry dude, you seem to be bad.
>>
>>382951638
I haven't yet. Got to High Road and figured I'd do some time trial clean-up and crates and the like on earlier maps.
>>
>>382951518

I'd say trying to 3 star a cup in modern Mario Kart games is a good example of this too. You have to get straight 1st placings but sometimes the AI just fucks you with item spam and rubberbanding. Has nothing to do with skill, just praying to whatever god you worship that the AI will behave for 4 races in a row. Getting a gold isn't bad, but a 3 star is almost complete luck.
>>
>>382951225
Certain levels have a special gem instead of a clear gem, and that means you gotta be the level, and get all the boxes without dying at all. However, I did this for the Lost City gem and died in Tawna's bonus room, but I still got the gem, so bonus rooms deaths don't seem to count thankfully. Also to get the two keys, there are two levels in the game with a Cortex bonus room, and they each hide a key.

Good difficulty :

>The enemy has varied attack types. I must learn the patterns and dodge at the correct times.

Artificial difficulty :

>This enemy takes 1000 hits to kill, and kills me in 2 hits that I cannot dodge because there is no telegraphing.

Artificial Difficulty is supposed to mean any difficulty that is not designed but rather the result of poor game mechanics.

Such as, bad controls, bad physics, or unintended game mechanics.

>>
>>382954337

>>
>>382954828
How can shit like that even be considered a game?

My understanding of games when I was kid was you either get really good or you just don't get to beat the game. This is especially true of pre-PS1 games. In fact PS1 games got way easier than what came before.

It is absolutely tragic that standards have declined this much. You can't even call that shit a video game anymore if you can buy your way to beating it.
>>
>>382955243
New generation wants to relax and enjoy, not challenge themselves.

I grew up on the arcades which were generally designed around getting gud to spend less quarters (unless it was a BS game), and NES following that.
>>
>>382944929
If there was an easy difficulty you'd see 100 threads a day bitching about how the game is "pandering" to casuals.
>>
>>382953226
>>382953116
Not him, but lol

He's right.

If you turn a game such as an FPS from Normal to Hard the enemies should become smarter, try to flank you, not run onto grenades, etc. But instead most of the time all it does is just make the enemies take more shots to kill. That is artificial difficulty.
>>
>>382955487
They may as well add an easy difficulty anyways. Wouldn't be much work to convert extra crates into checkpoints and have infinite lives on it, while retaining the rest of the game as-is.

Ignore all the other replies.

Artificial difficulty means you have to get lucky in order to win as there is no way for you to read what will cause you to loose.
Usually either by bullshit rng (like having an enemy by chance kill you by a crit that you could not have predicted and usually not have even prevented) or an unintuitive yet unforgiving learning curve (like if given a choice between multiple doors and all but one will kill you though there is nothing to imply which does or doesn't or an enemy using an extremely powerful attack without a tell that indicates how the move will work). Bonus points if the last check point is a long ways back.

Basically if a loss can be considered thanks to being unlucky or not being foretold by the game it is artificial difficulty. Devs will do it to expand a games length because it is easy for them to do even though it is unfair to the player. Most any game with artificial difficulty is considered low quality because of this.
>>
>>382956029

>>
>>382944919
When a game, or AI breaks the rules or cheats to make the game "more difficult". Crash bandicoot isn't artificial difficulty since ai's are pretty simple, and the game never really cheats to best you.
