Wasn't it the Ultramarines? Ultramarines are typically a bit more relaxed about making convenient truces with xenos to defeat bigger threats. And on a sliding scale of threats Chaos is so far off the other end of the Tau you'd need the webway to get to it before the heat death of the universe.

Tau are allies of convenience for most of the Imperium, pitting them against the hated Chaos is fully aligned with canon.

Yeah, the Tau are just one of countless insignificant alien empires throughout the galaxy, but they got turned into the mary-sues of their corner of the galaxy. And imperials defect to anyone and everyone all the fucking time, humanity isnt some collective hivemind and the middlemen throughout the galaxy know that following the laws of the imperium to the letter is more detrimental than not, since punishment more often than not doesnt get dealt swiftly even to even affect you. It has to be REALLY big to get you punished FAST (i.e. within your lifetime).
