I think that mostly his life went to shit around him due mostly just to circumstance.
However, at the same time the illusion spell that he fell for was incredibly obvious. The "demon king" doesn't attack and only moves away from you, and he also knew his friend cared more about wining the princess's hand than he did but he just HAD to be first in the tournament.
Maybe if he considered the world around him instead of acting straight away he might have avoided it.
