hey do I have to go fix the aurora? that shit is scaring me, I keep hearing about radiation leaking and after seeing the ship detonate I got scared.
also fuck every zone except the safe shallows. I hate that shit.
>>
>>382863806
Just give it a few more ingame days that whole Aurora situation pretty much sorts itself out.
>>
>>382863806
If you want to stop the radiation, you'll have to fix the aurora. You'll want to just for the sake of the better suit upgrades. You'll find lots of shit to scan as well so you can build a better base.
>>
>>382863693
I had issues finding the Seaglide, but that got sorted out. I also had problems looking for resource nodes since they retextured all the outcrops.
I like the new look though. Even if finding shit was momentarily fucked.
>>
>>382863806
you can, going in and fixing it removes the radiation after a few days passes, plus there're some good schematics and supplies inside
>>
>>382863806
No but you can explore it once you get the Radiation Suit

I already saw the ship blow the fuck up.
Also, who's killing everyone? Every time I visit a lifepod it has a huge whole in it.
Am I being hunted?
>>
>>382863806
Yes, you should fix it. It's not scary; just bring a fire extinguisher and a repair tool and you'll be fine.
>>
>>382864127
You are.
>>
>>382864127
An island holds the answers.
>>
>>382863806
I didn't mess with the Aurora until I had a seamoth because I knew they'd put a leviathan near the front of the damned thing. Once you go there and fix the radiation leaks in the engine room, shit gets much better since you can wear your stillsuit all the time and not worry too much about water. Plus the PRAWN blueprints are in the Aurora.

Now, it would be fantastic if bone sharks 5 miles away wouldn't come rushing to skull fuck my submarine even when I'm traveling slowly or with the silent drive feature.
>>
>>382864092
I think they finally got rid of terraforming, since I saw a few Crash explosions and they didn't leave craters.
There might be some artifacts, but I think it should be better now
>>
>>382864052

Well, that's much of the point of Subnautica.

There is ultimately very little that can challenge a systematically progressing player... it's mostly mental obstacles.
>>
>>382864127
The alium fish are killing everyone.
>>
>>382864092
they wound up having to take away the ability to modify terrain. It means that you can't dig your way to fhte final level but it makes the game stable, at least.

Working on making an actual product that can be sold and that has clear goals to deal with is the reason Subnautica didn't wind up No Man's Sky IMHO
>>
>>382864368
What are you implying? You might need a laser cutter, but there's plenty of food and water on board and the only hostile creatures are bleeders in the drive room

You don't even need to bring a fire extinguisher really, there's plenty to be found in the ship, so long as you don't waste their contents.
>>
>>382864679
Having to rely on a shield kills any reason to use silent running or slow speeds. Yeah, as soon as bone sharks start ramming my cyclops, I just hit the shields and watch them convulse with EMF aids, but still, it'd be nice if all that time and effort they put on the silent running update actually paid off by letting you be sneaky.

honestly, the cyclops is god damn garbage now, it would be somewhat useful if I could at least transport my PRAWN with it, but every time I try docking it the damn sub capsizes.
It's big and unwieldy, and the ocean isn't so big you can't just walk wherever you want to in the PRAWN. Basically the only use for it is throwing a locker/garden in for easy resource/food access, and at that point it's more a boat than a sub.
>>
>>382864787
"Creative" meaning an inventory full of rapidly breaking knives?
>>
>>382864787
>It doesn't lead to any interesting mechanics

What about giving you a last ditch speargun that can be used to deter predators, but has a rate of fire that makes it worthless to kill?
And then give you specialized bolts that can do things like attach to larger predators and then track their movements, both giving you the advantage in avoiding them and possibly making it a storyline feature where you have to find where they all go every few days and find the "Reaper Hive" there or some such.

Spearguns are far more than just for killing.
Adding anything more than spearguns wouldn't be necessary in my opinion though. But an easy ranged defensive tool would be nice to have if only to give players a security blanket.
>>
>>382865114

>want to explore active lava zone months ago

Now
>want to explore lava zone
>can't maneuver worth shit into hole under floating island
>lost river entrance blocked with trees and spiders that bounce you into cave walls
>can't get in at other lost river area with waterfall because fuck ton of trees and waterfall too tight to fit sub

Bravo, devs. Thanks for making the sub useless by putting fucking road blocks everywhere. There isn't even a use for the cyclops anymore, you fuckwits. What was the purpose of spending all that time on a silent running update if the sub is fucking useless now??

I don't even give a fuck about guns, because most things in the game have so much health that it would be pointless to even try. Reaper leviathans require about fifteen minutes of straight knifing just to be put down.

See, that's generally speaking why you'd want a gun.

Or at least the PRAWN should be as powerful as advertised in the ingame lore.
>>
I miss geomodding. I used to be able to make the perfect base in the safe shallows and now because of typical crafting game hitbox fuckery, I have to make a base that isn't nearly as ergonomic and streamlined.
>>
>>382866047
I'd be okay with no guns and 'creative solutions' if creatures were actually killable and not 1 billion HP unstoppable monsters. The truth is that they don't want 'creative solutions' as they put it, they want the player to be completely helpless and only able to run away.

Spoilered.

you get messages from the Sunbeam which is coming to save you
Sunbeam gets vaporized by Precursor Gun
your PDA points you in the direction of the Disease research Facility in the Lost River
it's there that you become aware of having the same disease that you've likely seen the creatures have as in you break out in green glowing cysts
then you get a telepathic message
your PDA points you toward the Precursor Power Center deeper still
you get another mind message
PDA says a massive facility is even deeper
you reach it and find a bunch of things and the source of the messages
now you have to hatch some babies with enzymes
then you find them as juveniles in the world and eat their enzymes to cure the disease
then you turn off the Gun
then you build a Rocket and fly away

and you may have only 5 ingame weeks to do everything up to the eating the cure before the disease kills you
>>
>>382868792
I really hope they don't put a time limit on the disease. It's no fun to have to semi-rush through the game before being able to explore.

What, you can enter the aurora? I tried finding an opening but it's fucking ugly texture makes it impossible to see anything.

Also the cyclops is literal garbage, attracts everything and their grandmother, to big to move anywhere. It's only good for a temp base but then I might as well just build a real base there.
>>
>>382874332
it's so trivially easy to break the food/water system that it almost doesn't matter once you have a good understanding of the game, but for a first time player you should probably just go with survival for the full experience
>>
>>382874405
You can enter it at the front of the aurora. Just stay on the surface and you'll see the 'ramp' to go inside.
>>
>>382874405
Look near the front of the wreck where the front end of it tore off for the openings. You'll want to at least bring a repair tool, fire extinguisher, and laser cutter with you to explore most of it.

That's usually how game dev works. You get all your content in first, then you optimize. That said the game already runs decently if you have a higher end computer.

And yes, if the game interests you, buying now while it's cheap is a solid idea. Even if you just buy it now and shelve it for 3 or 4 months to wait for the 1.0 release.

It has a tendency to stutter when moving around, because much like Minecraft it has to load chunks as you move around the map.

Back when they decided to scrap the whole Minecrafty terraforming aspect, there was talk about them baking the terrain to a static mesh, which would get rid of the chunk-loading performance issues.
That might still be part of their plan for their big performance/polish period that's coming up, but I haven't seen anything official about it. I can only imagine it's a pretty big undertaking to make that large of a change so late in development.

Some areas (Mushroom Forests) are more demanding than others, and there have been some builds with specific bugs that hit performance hard. Besides that and the chunk-loading issues it runs fairly well though.

They've already removed all ability to modify the terrain by the player as well as any creatures/etc. But the terrain is still using voxels, you just can't modify them.
The voxel terrain also creates a problem for their Xbone version, which can't do cloud saving with the big 2GB+ save files that the voxel terrain system creates.

Also that screenshot looks like the Windows Store.
>>
>>382881683
Phoneposting from office
>>
>>382881862
they are still using the voxel terrain for their own map creation process. they are going to ditch it and bake the map into a solid mesh as soon they are done tweaking the map. they just recently added new areas to the map, where they hide precursor phase gates leading out from the primary containment to the various biomes. wouldn't make much sense for them to get rid of a handy tool until they are done.
>>
>>382881772
They have an expansion planned on their trello page.
I'm hoping it leans more towards expanding the sandbox, but there's nothing announced about it yet. I don't really know where they can go with a story-based expansion, given the way the game ends.
>>
>>382881772
Is it really all that much stuff though? Three pretty small ayy facilities, and the somewhat unobtrusive quest to cure yourself. It mostly seems it's just to move you into the deeper sections for those who aren't inclined to explore on their own weirdos[/spoilers]. Only shitty thing would be if they added a timer to your need to cure yourself, but I don't think that's a sure thing either way yet.
>>
>>382882091
Right. I understand why they don't want to do it until they have the map more or less finalized.

Multipurpose Rooms seems to be one of the things that kind of fell by the wayside during development. Stuff like being able to put in a glass ceiling in concept art and similar things all are just not there. Which is rather a shame because you use them for lots of shit from bedroom to aquariums to equipment or storage. Basebuilding in general could use a for more modules, like stairways so you don't have to use the vertical laddertubes.

to all the people saying they're going to wait for the full release: if you're curious, i would say just hop in now.

yes, the game's ending isn't in, but the story is 90% complete and if you do manage to hit that wall, it's SUPER easy to deduce what that last 10% is and it's nothing mindblowing

also the "story" isn't really important at all, it more just serves as a series of objectives to better encourage you to explore the various areas in the world. open world survival/crafting games like this are 100% about the journey, it not having a YOU WON! screen yet isn't going to ruin your enjoyment at all
>>
>>382883848
IIRC, base ladders will be getting an overhaul at some point to match the ladders in the cyclops, which will hopefully mean we get some way to traverse long vertical distances without staring at a ladder climb animation for 30 seconds.
There was also concept art for an extra-large aquarium structure the size of a multipurpose room and accessed through a waterlock, and a collapsable docking port for the cyclops.

I think it's frustrating that the Reaper Leviathan is basically the only thing you have to worry about for the whole game.
The other Leviathans are too localised to their biomes and they never get the jump on you like Reapers do.

The feeling of trying to rush to the Aurora knowing there were tons of Reapers around there was far scarier than going through the other places knowing that there are one or two easily avoidable Leviathans.
They even mentioned Sea Dragons rising to the surface to hunt Reapers so I don't see why they don't implement that.

Seems like it's kind of variable for people. Some have severe sutter and FPS problems, personally the FPS is better than before but the pop-in is beyond abysmal. It's next on the roadmap though, only two bits of story left then it's bugs and optimization, including static mesh map.

They do, but as long as you don't go into the Deep Grand Reef you won't have them near enough. Of course, by accident I started building right above one of the entrances to it without noticing but what you gonna do. I hope they'll add in something like the Seamoth Perimeter Defense System for bases though so you can build in Crabsquid areas too. The DGR/NKZ are cozy but full of them. I think create danger to bases has been something the devs have thought about and one of the possible post 1.0 additions, so we'll see.

Subnautica has huge content updates every 1.5-2 months, and frequent smaller updates and patches between. Currently, its about less than 2 updates away from release, given that the most recent one just introduced the endgame content.

The Forest has been in development hell for years at this point with only minor updates and still no actual goal or end-game in sight.

Warpers are a temporary threat. They only attack after you've done the self-scan that shows you the Carar and stop attacking once you're cured.

>So is there even a point in making a cyclops since everything can break it now?
Only notable threats against it are the fuckhuge killing machines that are Leviathan types. Between the Overshield, Shield Module and Silent Running you've options aplenty. Only real issue is Bonesharks going berserk, and that's a bug.

All animal life on the map respawns, including predators. There's no point in 'creativity' as the developers put it, because most things in the game have way too much health to be killed by conventional or unconventional means. Dropping a boulder on a reaper won't even scratch it. Throwing crash fish or toxic torpedoes at it will only make it angrier. Using the statis rifle and knife will take fifteen straight minutes of kniving to get rid of it.

If they wanted the game to be underwater Amnesia, they should have just said so from the beginning and removed any pretense of being able to defend yourself.

They're kinda weird, but they improved significantly with VotD. Now you can at least sort of see things using them, instead of just a big white blob. Both of those deleted files start storing massive amounts of data regarding items that have been taken in the game. Cleaning this out every 10 or so saves brings the framerate back to normal and was the only way to prevent the game from autocrashing within 10 seconds of game loads.

Both files will be automatically generated again once you boot the game so they have to be cleaned out from time to time. Expect nearly 1gb of crap to be freed up.

Also, it resets the map causing loot/wreckage/resources to respawn. Here is a link to what I've described so you know it's legit and not just some asshole trying to get you to fuck up the game.

I don't think you spend enough time on the surface to put that much work into storms, but occasional rainstorms would be nice, if only to add some variety to the scenery. The skybox needs an overhaul to go along with it.

I want depth gating on the player, with different upgrades to let you go deeper like trimix breathing gas and more scifi stuff like a liquid breathing suit.
It's goofy as hell to have depth requirements on vehicles, but then you can just hop outside and swim around. Kills the ominous feeling of crushing pressure all around you.

Maybe change the PRAWN grapple so you can still use the standard claw to grab things when it's attached, and maybe a robot arm attachement on the Seamoth. I want it the vehicles to feel like actual subs.

some modern whaling harpoons have four large hinged barbs behind an explosive harpoon head, are six feet long and 120 pounds of steel. I find it amusing how the pendulum has swung in favor of the Left, yet we're still every bit as prudish and fearful of "hurting the children" as we've ever been. It's very obviously a lewd suggestion, but as you mentioned it would either go over their head or, as I remember while still a child hearing a lewd joke, go "Haha, they said a lewd thing" and keep going.

The point is that either option has cons to it, which isn't the case for games that just get released like they used to.

Never tried swiping those, what types of coral do you get?

Also what the fuck is this thing? It almost destroyed my sub in like 2 seconds

/v/ is essentially neogaf for traps nowadays and anything remotely masculine like a speargun triggers the supressed reality that they have something resembling a penis between their legs.

Bonesharks probably

You still need to pay for all those materials you used to get out of there, anon. Your current bill stands at 658,000 credits.

Sea Dragon Leviathan. It's big and mean. But also relatively easygoing, use Silent Running to get away from them a little bit and they'll just swim back on their path.

>Never tried swiping those, what types of coral do you get?
I think you need it for the Water Purifier, maybe. I don't actually know, I just stuck with melons for hydration.
>>
>>382902146
actually, there are 3, red, purple and regular
>>
>>382902263
Red and purple both just give table coral though, unless there's a third type I've never noticed.

>>382902263
i think they all give the same item, right? and they can be harvested with the basic knife
>>
>>382902146
It attacked my sub when it wasn't even on though. I was thinking of making a small outpost here but jesus this thing is ruthless.

>>382901604
Just looked it up on the wiki, apparently the hardened knife does more damage...and still less than the thermoblade. Fuck next time I boot the game up I'm making a thermoblade, apparently any knife can harvest from a tube so the hardened knife is worthless.

Went and looked it up, Common Coral (tube) is used for creating bleach. Table Coral is from the red/purple and we all know what those are for.

Were you in it's path? They have a pretty wideranging patrolpath, and sometimes attack things in range and hit you/vehicles by accident. When exploring the Lava Castle just park it right on the cave entrance.
>>
>>382902547
he sticks to that one area and has a pretty limited patrol route

now that you know where he is, know going in you might need to pop on silent running, and stick to the bottom/walls because he tends to swim around the middle there

Yeah, I'll probably wait until the next update till I go back down there. I got the kyanite crystals or whatever I wanted and I don't feel like driving my sub through narrow tunnels again to get back down there. I think I'll explore some areas I have't been to yet, like the north east corner of the map.

Also I love the lost river, shit looks so nice and I like how bright everything is.

I actually lost my Lost River tree at some point, just vanished. All the Ghostrays ended up swimming in circles around an empty space, wacky rays.
