1 hour of Dark Souls will have maybe 30 - 40 combat encounters, or 1 every 2 minutes at it's slowest. This requires you to think and gives you a constant sense of progression via soul aquisition. There's no downtime, and if there is it's entirely up to you when.

In 1 hour of Breath of the Wild you reluctantly attacked 3 bokoblins, breaking your shield, then spent the remaining time staring at your stamina bar while you sprint through meadow after meadow of nothingness.

Plz game devs. More actions per minute. Enough fucking sprinting through fields.

Except - if you had played Gothic II you would know - that almost every quest is as varied and depends upon intuition and exploration as much as that one example.
In fact, that one example is one possible quest that you can select in order to be able to access the upper level of the town you are in. At literally every step in the game you are presented with loads of interesting options.

If you think Gothic has better pacing than Souls you are delusional. It has many strengths, but that isn't one of them. Furthermore, "exploring the world" in Gothic is really just stumbling across the map genociding everything in site to build up experience. You USUALLY aren't looking for hidden coves to find unique items and stuff like you do in Souls. At best you are looking in hidden coves to find useless items to hoard in your inventory and never use or items that cause very minor stat boosts. Natural progression is autism bait.

Dark Souls is an action game where you just walk from one room to another fighting monsters. Gothic is a big open world with lots of dialogues, exploring etc.

I never even brought up Dark Souls. I was talking about Morrowind. And my point was that it's ok when a game has parts of it where there aren't monsters everywhere and you just walk in peace and enjoy the environment, but it's bad when the entire map is empty as fuck with nothing in it.

There needs to be balance and that's what Gothic has. On a trip from buster's hut to onar's farm there's not that many enemies and you can just walk in peace and explore, but other times there's lots of enemies everywhere
