Why was Diablo II so much better than Diablo and Diablo III?

I don´t understand what people see in these games. You´re just clicking on enemies and constantly swapping out stuff for slightly better stuff so you can click on enemies better.

characters feel like they are your creation since skill points/stats are permanent (sorta) you had full control
Areas were neat

Potions were not fun in D2 and dying and dropping them all sucked
D2 had some abilities that were completely useless or were simply baked into a stronger abilities at a higher level. This was how the game was designed but it doesn't work very well.

At high level play, yes. Only a few builds with a few types of equipment are usable.

The rune system vs a real skill tree was a shit decision, I think thats what i hated the most about d3 cuz it cut down build choices. It was cool other than that.
D1 was still ok but it was the first so of course by d2 they had ideas of improvements.
They waited way to long for d3 though and forgot that good shit, and probably lost some of the people that made d2 good

what if Diablo 3 had an actual roguelike mode? you don't learn anything automatically, you pick up gear that grants you skills as you go and you swap it around to see how far you can get, obviously perma death and vendors with strong loot, beefed up monsters and getting farther gives you some sort of progression like prestige or unlock harder content.
