>It's a milestone in gaming.
This.
Bought Horizon Zero Dawn during the E3 sale last week, and I've put maybe 15-20 hours into it. I am constantly hitting R3 when I see something interesting in the distance; I am constantly jumping against random walls to try and climb them; am I am constantly venturing into strange and difficult-to-access parts of the map and being disappointed when there's nothing there, not even a Korok Seed; I am also constantly marveling at how good the weather animation is, but keep expecting to be struck by lightning during every storm.
And when I go back to MGSV to try and finish it, or Blood and Wine, or Xenoblade Chronicles X... it's the same damned thing.
Breath of the Wild has really ruined open world games for me. Nintendo has set a brand new standard, and it is just too, too high.
>>
>>382838365

Yeah I never understood this criticism.

My number one problem with open world games is that while the exploring is fun, what I end up finding almost never is.

In BotW, you get awesome exploring, and then the thing you find when you explore are Zelda puzzles, which is like my favorite thing in gaming.

There's nothing fun about doing it 100 times for it to work only once. It's only fun to watch webms of the one successful time it actually worked the way you wanted it to. But it's also deceptive. It makes it look like you can do things like that in the game, when it cuts out all the frustration of trying to do it and it not working because the game really wasn't meant to do it

But this honestly make no sense.

I've played every game in that pic, and BOTW is truly different.

I bought both HZD at the PS4 e3 sale along with MGS 5. I put 20 hours in each already. I then bough BOTW after and ended up finishing it.

I can't go back to MGS or HZD now. It's not the same. HZD weather animations are amazing, but nothing happens. BOTW has me scared of everything, I'm truly immersed in the environment, cause I think shit might happen.

I look in different areas in both games for shit like korok seeds and chest, anything exploring, but nothing. Most of the time, it's just empty pretty space.

After BOTW, I'm constantly colliding into things expecting damage, or climbing, but no, I just walk into a wall.

I can't even take MGS 5 and HZD AI correctly. HZD the AI is good alone, but fuckin awful once played after zelda.

I feel as if most of /v/ who argue about best sandbox openworlds, have literally never played BOTW and argue against it. BOTW has ruined these past games, because of the insane focus on hyperinteractivity.

Game companies can't make skyrim clones anymore, seriously, BOTW has set a standard, and real fuckin high. It's true when they say this game will be remembered years later.
>>
>>382838116
yeah you're right, I'd much rather have to adhere to a certain way of doing everything to the point that it's essentially scripted than having actual freedom in how I approach things and play the game.

For each difficulty, yes, but you don't have to do all three sets in one go. They also give you refill rooms every so often to give you food, a fairy, sometimes armor, and weapons.

Nintendo fans are only wowed by BOTW because they are 2-3 gens behind everyone else. The rest of the relevant gaming world went through their 'wow, physics!' phase over a decade ago, but not Nintendo fans, the old is new to them because they never leave their little sheltered world of bing bings and wahoos. Nothing BOTW does is particularly new or exciting (the only 'recent' fad they plopped into their outdated fad soup of a game is open world, which is probably more tired and stale than physics at this point).
>>
>>382838075
You can't do anything like that in Horizon, stop lying. Everything is scripted to hell in that game.
>>
I have completely forgotten what this webm is but I know I saved it pretty recently
>>
>>382838608
That completely untrue. I've fashioned many solutions to situations off the cuff and had them work first time.

One of my most memorable ones for me was engaging an enemy camp and realising I had no fire arrows to set off nearby explosives.

So I attached a piece of flint to an octoballoon, used a korok leaf to blow it over to the explosives and then used a regular arrow to hit the piece of flint to make a spark and then giggled my fucking ass off as the whole camp erupted.

I didn't even know for sure it would work. But I had enough faith in the game's mechanics to try it. And much fun was had.

Yeah, the ungating of areas was definitely something missing this time around. But the gimmick is that you can go anywhere right from the start, so it would kind of be counter to the point of the game.

There is still some cool progression though. Building stamina and hearts obviously. And the guardian powers that make combat and traversal easier.

That's a negative point though.
Compare Horizon's climbing with BotW's for example: One gives you full freedom over what to climb, the other one is litterally "follow the yellow paint".

Yeah, but it takes too long to be popular. Current WR is 8.5 hours.
http://www.speedrun.com/botw#All_Shrines

More popular categories that involve doing a good number of shrines is All Main Quests or Master Sword, since you need like 48 shrines for the master sword. There's a lot of interesting routing in choosing which shrines to do.

I'm not talking about exploiting the game to finish it in a speedrunning fashion. I'm (and the earlier post as well I'm assuming) talking about the game having such a wide variety of tools and mechanics that synergize well with each other. You have a small amount of tools in BOTW and theres so much you can do with the flexibility of the mechanics that you're only really limited by your creativity.
Yea in Morrowind you can exploit alchemy, you can exploit chameleon and your knowledge of static loot, you can exploit a bunch of mechanics to speed run but I'm not just talking about exploits, it's about open ended game design that lets the player figure out how to use them.

>>382838929
Can you elaborate on BotW's "hyperinteractivity"? I hated BotW at launch and after revisiting it recently, I've learned to enjoy it more, but the enjoyable parts of gameplay are separated by massive stretches of emptiness. When you're not mindlessly near-depleting your stamina and stuffing your pockets with every meaningless trinket littering the ground, you're either finding inane "puzzles" with the riveting goal of moving around a Magenesis block to complete a pattern or something equally mundane for literal Korok shit or finding Zelda's response to Portal's test chambers for a barely more engaging 5 minute puzzle because you want a fast travel point/more hearts because everything hits like a fucking truck

BOTW's not a bad game, but it's not as good as WW or MM. front-loading the game in the interest of total freedom is a two-edged sword. means you'll never get anything really neat or game-changing from any of the beasts/side quests, because they just can't allow new mechanics midway through the game.

combat's still pretty crappy. it's definitely better than it's ever been, but that's saying so little. disappointing that there are only three types of weapons, and that flurry is so broken-powerful. you can try to pad it out by doing gimmicky shit with runes, but there's really only so many ways to clear a camp quickly and effectively.

story's garbage; par for the course, but still a missed opportunity. the voice acting in particular is just atrocious.

i'd rather have gotten dedicated dungeons, a handful of side dungeons, and a few of those weird zelda holes in the ground than the divine beasts + shrines. so few of the shrines were anything but brain-dead simple, and the divine beasts were easy, too. i know zelda puzzles have never been hard, but again, just a missed opportunity to move the series forward. don't get me started on that lame-ass ganon fight, speaking of missed opportunities.

was pretty fun overall though, could have been way better, nowhere near as good as your average joe might think from all the "fuck i booted up BOTW and literally can't stop cumming" reviews. might pick it back up if DLC2 is good, but i'm not holding my breath. anyone still playing to collect all the korok seeds or whatever weird pointless goal they may have is an autistic weirdo.

Even if it was literally 1:1 ALTTP's Hyrule in OOT (it's not) it still wouldn't be a clone by virtue of the gameplay being in 3d. That fundamentally changes way too much about how the game is played.

The jump to 3D alone would fundamentally make it not a clone.
>>
>>382847254
WW is not an OoT clone at all it was the only 3D Zelda before BotW that tried to capture what the first one did by getting rid of a hub entirely and going for a seamless world.

SS is the polar opposite of an OoT clone, that has a hub and segmented areas that were each treated as a dungeon. Instead of asking the player where to go it asked how do I get from point A to point B in the overworld.

The only 3D game that tried to be OoT was TP, SS feels more like Mario Galaxy than OoT.

>anyone still playing to collect all the korok seeds or whatever weird pointless goal they may have is an autistic weirdo.
I just like to explore. It's the first open world that doesn't feel like a glorified checklist to me.
>>
>>382846921
Shrines are just bite sized puzzles which don't really put up any resistance and all just offer the same item at the end. It was so much better in other games walking into a proper dungeon with more puzzles to solve and enemies to fight where you would get a cool new item that would defeat a huge menacing boss and offer new ways to interact with the overworld

Side quests are filler. Nothing bad, but there's no strong incentive to give a shit about them.

Exploration is just finding the one way around a huge ass mountain that will barely let you scale it by depleting your stamina at the last second and mindlessly gathering mushrooms and smashing ore deposits

This
I want the full open world, but I also want some gating/progression along with full proper dungeons. Climbing stuff is cool, but I feel it should be limited to specific surfaces until you unlock ice picks to climb most things afterwards. There are clever ways to gate an open world.
>>
>>382847185
That's the thing though: Zelda does absolutely nothing special. Outside maybe the gliding mechanic and climbing virtually any surface, Zelda stole mechanics from basically every open world game since 2005 and didn't really do anything that great with them. Everyone loves dick riding BotW, but they'll just bring up how they love open world Zelda without mentioning anything it does better than years of games that tread that ground before

it had no structure; i explored it, but there wasn't any point to any of it. the whole time i just felt like i should zora up the waterfalls and beeline to ganon; they KIND of tried to make it into a gauntlet with the lynel fights, the ganon-corruption blocking certain routes, and the guardians, but again, all of that can just be easily bypassed. i didn't care for it. thought it was a pretty underwhelming finale. good music, at least.

What's wrong with that, it leaves progression entirely up to the player and has them use what is given to them to progress.
The format of enter dungeon -> get item -> progress through now open paths with said item was getting sort of old, I like the new format and with just a bit more focused approach I think they have a winning dungeon formula.

There's always a guy who asks the same thing so allow me.
Stalnoxes cannot be killed in their main body. Even if they are at 1hp, the eye needs to fall off the body and you need to deal the final blow to it. If you deal enough damage to the eye (let's say x5 bomb arrow) while the monster is in full health, when the eye falls off it will have the correct amount shown, because that's the main body. To better understand this, the eye starts falling off at around 50% hp.

Now to what actually happens there. To make it simple:
Metal boomerang (attracts lightning) is thrown at the eye causing it not only to drop but also carries it guaranteeing a lightning hit. This is why the camera shifts abruptly to the right since the enemy (the eye) is locked on. That's why it dies even though the lightning strikes far from the skeleton.
Still, that isn't all. It's isn't the boomerang nor the lightning that kill the stalnox, it's actually bush fire. Note how there's a tiny sliver of health behind after the strike and how there's a little fire where it struck. That's what actually deals the final blow.

Calculated? Partly. Lucky? Defenitely. Cool? Fuck yeah!

coming up with alternative ways to solve puzzles is fun.

In most games they'd consider it an exploit and try to fix it in a patch.

in BotW they call it "emergent gameplay" and encourage it.

Fyi, you can change the movement vectors very very easily by shooting the object with an arrow. assuming you have a good place to stand.

How specific should I go? Honestly, open world games are pretty copy-paste. They're all just games that lightly suggest doing something to accomplish a main goal addressed in the game's story but also allow you to disregard doing that completely and fight enemies or perform fetch quests for random NPCs. The difference between New Vegas and BotW being that you encounter interesting things more frequently and fighting enemies is engaging in NV, but in BotW, you have to wander around more to find something truly engaging or have to debate whether killing the enemies that get in your way are worth breaking your weapon for. Shrines aren't as satisfying as the standard 3D Zelda dungeons prior to BotW and Korok seed collecting is a fucking joke and the epitome of game padding if spreading content across a massive barren overworld didn't do that enough.

>>
>>382853223
Except getting Korok seeds is so mundane that it feels like adding a fuck ton of collectibles so players can pretend they accomplished something on their boring virtual hike.

>Oh hey, two similar looking shapes made out of stone cubes with one having a metal cube. What if I use Magnesis to make it match the other one?
>Seed

>Oh hey, there's a big hole in the ground. There's a big rock near the big hole. What if I pushed the big rock into the big hole because they are both big and I like matching things?
>Seed

Basically repeat that several hundred more times and bam, you apparently have the 10/10 open world game of the century

Even ignoring the Pannenkoek meme, 64 is unequivocally the best Mario, and arguably the best 3d platformer. It comes down to the most fundamental thing in the game: how Mario controls.
Similar to how all these BotW webms are showing off really cool shit they can do with the very rudimentary moveset and few abilities the game gives you, 64 gives you Mario's complete moveset up front and then allows you to get better with it. You don't unlock moves that allow you to traverse the worlds easier, you get better as a player with what was given. Contrast that with Banjo-Kazooie (a great game in its own right, but structured more rigidly around collecting moves to traverse worlds) or Sunshine. (where you almost always have a hover nozzle to get you out of a blunder, making well executed movement feel less rewarding)

Just Bragging rights. I haven't gotten it yet, but I have been itching to play Zelda again, so I just might. The key to fighting higher health enemies is always finding more creative ways to kill them that don't involve using your weapons. Finding cliffs to throw them off, drowning them, using Octoballons to get them into the air, sneak striking them (which doesn't use durability at all). Just hitting them means wasting your weapons, get more creative.

I wanted to have the energy blasts from him be solid objects that I could use stasis on and then send back at him since we found out that Stasis could even do the whole momentum thing. Just something about giant spikes impaling a boss sounded so badass to me. Oh well, maybe I'll do it like this to ol Waterblight for my Master playthrough and not just shower him with Bomb arrows. It's still crazy how much damage that does actually, that seems pretty close to over 100 points.

Whoops just realised that I fucked up and linked the wrong one. The method in this webm >>382837749 is relatively more difficult to achieve consistently.
When you first activate the terminal, the ball drops immediately. The method that I'm referring to flings the first ball immediately, then lets the second ball drop into a position that is right at the exit of the maze without having to guide the ball through it.
I assumed that the webm was speaking to an easier method than going through the puzzle. While that webm is more impressive it's more difficult to achieve; the method I refer to is simple, easy, and so brainlessly consistent I believe it was intentionally put into the game.

But flipping the ball onto the back of the maze makes it significantly more likely for the ball to roll off. At least, I have difficulty achieving that with consistency. I was proposing an easier and more consistent, rather than faster, method.

Pretty much every NPC is named, they all move around the world, they've all got their own little subplots going on. They'll be doing different things around town each time you visit.

But the bland, stand-in-one-spot-and-spot-the-same-dialogue NPC's of other games have taught me such things are to be ignored. As much as I could notice it was going on, I could never seem to remember who was who or pay enough attention to them to try and keep track.

Nintendo found that trying to compete directly with their competitors for raw power wasn't doing them much in market share, their sales went down when they did, from SNES, to N64, to Gamecube, each was more powerful than its competitor, but it wasn't as dominant for the generation as the NES (SNES barely won out against the Genesis, and the N64 and Gamecube lost huge to Sony), so they went a blue ocean strategy where they don't directly try to compete, but expand the market, like they did with the NES. The Wii did extremely well because of that strategy, and they've been trying to duplicate it since.

They know that direct competition with Sony and Microsoft is a loss.

Also the N64 using carts instead of discs and the GameCube using mini discs definitely didn't help as they lost a lot of third party support such as the infamous Final Fantasy VII situation.

SNES, N64 and GC are also their best consoles.
