What am I in for? Any tips for a beginner?
>>
Radiant mode isn't really that much easier. It also seems to make certain events appear faster.
Prepare to grind.
You should use Antiquarian to make dosh.
Avoid the Crimson Court content as long as you can.
Don't cling to or dish out your recruits. Make smart estimations on their value. You don't want to consider every individual in your roster expendable.
>>
Avoid the first mission of the crimson court for at least a few vanilla boss wins.

Leper is best boy but best boy needs ACC trinkets to remain best boy
>>
>>382795924
Don't ignore buffs/debuffs/stuns. You'll rely on debuffs and stuns at higher levels so you better learn to use them.

The lower level a character is, the cheaper it is to reinforce or get rid of perks.

The Experienced Recruits upgrade from the stage coach is very good. Make sure you get it when you can.

Be prepared to lose heroes. They'll get beat up, bled out, stressed out, afflicted, etc. You'll fail quests. You'll lose trinkets. You'll be yelling at the screen when everything is going sideways.

But the flipside of that coin is that when things break in your favor, it's fucking amazing.

Also, watch out for this guy.

Also, remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.

>>

It is objectively the correct answer to interact with every bookshelf you see, considering you can exploit them to get a ridiculously strong set of positive/negative quirks.
>>
Speed is the best stat in the game. It turns 4v4s into 4v2s

Crit is the second best stat in the game. You should always have 2 crit heroes. The stress heal and safety increase from killing mobs fast is essential.

The vestal (and healing in general) is worthless except on boss runs

Keep a tab open so you can look up curio interactions

The minimum amount of food you should take is 8 + another 8 for every firewood (mission length)
>>
When exploring there will be an altar with a red orb/sphere. Use a torch on it and it works as a sort of waypoint/save location that lets you speed up backtracking.

>What am I in for?
>Darkest Dungeon
A very atmospheric dungeon crawler that's unfortunately incredibly sluggish in its pacing and as grindy as a Korean MMO. The positives far outweigh the grindiness for a good 15-20 hours though, you'll have fun. Then you need to grind 45-80 more hours to finish the game. That won't be fun unless you're autistic.

Honestly can't say anything positive about it. Just pure trash.

>>382806304
It's not arbitrary at all though. Apprentice quests are level 1. Veteran quests are level 3. Champion quests are level 5. Being able to bring higher level heroes to lower level dungeons would 100% invalidate the way the difficulty is designed. The only penalty you get for going into a dungeon that's too high of a level is a +20 stress per level difference from walking through the door, and then +25% stress from stress effects.
>>

>>382807191
Take bleed or blight, depending on dungeon.
Take +damage against beasts or eldritch, depending on dungeon.
Always have ways to hit the enemy supports (positions 3 and 4).
Its good to have some reliable stun, so you can keep the last guy alive for a round to heal up.
Oh, and heals are good to have. Stress and health heals.

>Worthless

He's invaluable in early game dungeons to 100% negate all stress. Couple him with any sort of guard based party and you're practically guaranteed to escape without needing any sort of stress healing in town. Not to mention he is a fantastic assist to the Leper and Hellion because he makes them have better accuracy which they desperately need.

this

support jester is incredibly useful given that his buffs stack when used in succession
>>
>>382809724
Maybe he wiped his ass with it.
>>
>>382809696
Bounty hunter instead of a jester? They don't even take the same position what. The only early game alternatives you might have is like, an arbalest. Or a grave robber. He's a slot 3/4.
>>
>>382809739
While you're casting support spells, people that know the game is a dps race are killing. That's the entirety of the tactics in TDD. Just kill stuff asap.
>>
>>382809269
It ain't me
>>
>>382809184
>it took a massive set up though

No it didn't. You could use Finale first turn to kill a stress dealer in position 3 and then have the jester be a buff/stressbot the rest of the fight.

But now Finale takes a massive set up to be useful and by the time you get it set up it's worthless because there's only one enemy remaining and he has 3 hp left. You don't really need a 46 damage Finale crit at that point.
>>
>>382809819
>They don't even take the same position what
I never said they did.
>>

Kill SOME stuff asap, turtle the rest as you heal and reduce stress.

>>
>>382809996
Then why would you be replacing either with each other? You can just take them both, you idiot. It's not like there is much your fucking bounty hunter would do from slot 4.

You are in practically no fear of dieing in the early game outside of bad party makeup and unlucky stuns. If a jester breaks your party because of one less attack then your party blows dicks m8.

In the last panel hes not leaving them to go on a crusade or venture to the hamlet, hes returning.
Hes just about to get home and he sees his family, then he has a flashback to war and realizes that he isn't the same person, or he realizes that home life isn't for him. So after just coming back, he leaves. His Wife and son just stand there in disbelief as they see him ride off without saying a word after being gone for god knows how long.
Either way it puts a whole new perspective on things.

In the last panel he is literally turning away from his family.

So I also started playing it and I think I'm doing DLC things because some faggots keeps pouring wine or blood on me constantly along with some crazy assholes keep tentacle raping the brains of my adventurers.
Am I supposed to postpone the DLC until I get better or is it ok to do it simultaneously?
Also plague doctor seems pretty nice with corpse removal and DOT is there any class tiers or something because it plays better than let's say occultist so far or leper performing much better than the crusader if I'm not fighting against undeads. Also is it worth it to take vestal to only to sit her at the back and use for healing?
I might be completely wrong since I only cleared 3-5 dungeons so far.

If I'm running an Abo I'm usually trying to stack blight, so that means a plague doctor in slot 4. I don't like putting Vestals or Occus in 2, so to run without a healer I usually use Hound Master in 2 (both him and Abo can self heal) and then MaA in the front. No self-heal on him, but when his buffs are up he doesn't take much damage and with 4 characters who can dish out stuns you've got time to set them up.
>>
>>382813074
his high bleed resist makes him a great hero for any group that relies on occultism heals. Not that a vestal would ever heal him... but he's a great unit for any non-religious party.

you can also partially mitigate the debuff from his transformation by using the houndmaster's aoe party buff.
>>
>>382813074
Houndmaster/jester in third to counter stress
Hellion/man at arms as frontliner/bounty hunter as second
Occultist in back because he can heal you for 0 health and at the same time bleed you to death

I hate how all his abilities fuck my torch light. I'd been planning on running him as a healer in non-religious parties instead of Vestal, but he fucking eats through light like a fat kid through cake.

His abilities cost money to use, ranging from one to two torches per ability used.

I might not mind, if doing a pitch dark run was actually beneficial. But it's bullshit how lowsy pitch dark runs are compared to the benefits torch light offers.

Full light:
>Extra chance to scout and find secret rooms
>Extra chance to surprise monsters and fuck them up on the first turn
>Extra chance to dodge and not take damage

No light:
>Extra chance to overfill your inventory with shitty trinkets with more demerits than merits
>Extra chance for monsters to surprise your party and fuck you up
>Extra chance for monsters to crit your party and fuck you up
>Extra damage and accuracy for monsters to hit your party and fuck you up
>Extra stress damage
>You have an extra 3% chance to crit, compared to monsters with an extra 6% chance

Seriously though. Why the fuck would anyone do a run without torches? Unless their idea of a good time is getting kicked in the balls repeatedly.

I outlined that already.

Bluntly speaking, I already have trouble with inventory management as is. Figuring out what shit to throw away in favor of newly discovered items.

Why the hell would more useless shit to figure out how to manage entice me? As for crits, your monsters have their crit rate effectively doubled in comparison to your increased percentage. So you have a much greater chance to take on increased stress damage from enemy attacks than you have of reducing stress from crits.

Dark runs are pointless.

Throughout the game you play as a literal nobody who does jack shit, when suddenly at the end they tell you "Oh actually your character does do something cool, not that you'll ever see it." Wow. Amazing.

Not to mention it breaks the narrative you're given of your ancestor, where each plot is narrated by the same voice in first-person perspective describing his fall into darkness. That you play as some shit who supposedly arrives to clean up your ancestor's mess only to fall into "unwitting" prey to the same deprivations as your ancestor is pretty miserable.

>That's literally the plot of everything lovecraft ever wrote that's the point

The characters in Lovecraft's series were by and large ones of action. Ones with their boots on the ground, whether it's plundering tombs, being chased by the hordes of malign forces, or investigating dark secrets. Their ability is demonstrated throughout the story.

In this game your character is persona non grata, who makes no appearance beyond a silhouette (maybe?) in the coach at the beginning. Who ostensibly whiles his way at town twiddling his thumbs while he waits for his mercenaries to give him the latest valuables pillaged from the nearby ruined estate.

Your character is never shown to exhibit any ability beyond counting coins and paying other people to do the dirty work. I say pay, but you're such a jew you don't even give your mercenaries any form of compensation for their mortal efforts. They're literally free, beyond the powerful trinkets they wield in their fight against the dark horrors in the estate.

It got way better though, back in the EA or early release days this game was a fucking grind you wouldnt believe.

Now with the bank, higher level heroes from the stagecoach, nerfed stress enemies, the antiquarian and other stuff it got way less grindy. If you havent played in a while it is worth getting back into it honestly. I have stopped playing because the late midgame was an insane grind, now its actually quite comfy almost too easy compared to the older versions.

And like I said, this is an example of the writing telling us something without showing it. Your character is worthless throughout the game. To have some two-minute cut scene that hints at some badass life afterwards is just a cop out.

I'd rather have the character be some upstanding figure with moral rectitude, who would revive his house and lead it into a golden age. Then to be some worthless cunt who in the thirteenth hour is supposed to become some master of arcane secrets.

Hmm......

Let's see....

Torturing a person who for some non unimportant reason for sure have ability to survive being stabbed, starved and having eyes gourged just because he told people of how much of a retard ancestor is and shit he is going to create.

Literally wasting all the wealth you hve for some retarded "cult" excavation that is uncontained and unobserved by anyone else but by few workers and Ancestor and then giving young virgin girls to eldrich fish people for money to fund your excavation.

Pouring garabage and cursed flesh into the old forsaken tunnels/warrens underneath the hill creating unimaginable monstrocity and cursing living and dead flesh into becoming half pig abominations, and they summon/create the incoholate and god depraved thing they call swine god/king/prince.

Inviting and guesting literal Necromancers into your home.

Buying the cannons that lates as you lost the money to pay for the crew and army became part of the brigands and marauders attacking inocent people.

Paying bunch of pirates to cary your goods in secrecy, who knows what shit only to later when they demand more money ancestor gives them "special offer".

That Hag from weald that he managed to fuck up who knows how.
And DLC shit i haven't event even finished.

Ancestor really is a good person.

I forgot to say the personell managing element is only really a game if you're playing with a deadline.
Otherwise the only game progression is really the moment you realize that its easier and 'better' to play as a corrupt bureaucrat.

Fights and exploration have plenty of random elements and not in a good way. That you can specialize is just another way of saying your builds decide fights before they happen, so the game element is modification and not the actual combat.

Once you ill the Countess and leave the courtyard there will be a Courtyard quest to kill the Guardian every week.

This will always be a medium champion quest with ten rooms (including the starting and boss rooms). Enemies, obstacles, curios (with the addition of sacks and backpacks) and the guaranteed stress on each tile of a corridor are the same as the Courtyard story maps. Until you collect all the class set trinkets the quest will always award one and the Guardian will also drop one. The Guardian also always drops a blueprint.

fuckong huge dungeons that require multiple teams to break (pic related)

a disease that curses heroes with vampirism, gotta keep feeding them blood or they'll die, or you can gives them more than what's needed and make them bloodlusted for a damage buff, but it acts like an affliction in that they freak their teammates out a little or act on their own

A new character called the Flagellant who gets stronger the closer to death he is, letting his heal his friends or deal huge damage to the enemy

and new buildings to build in the Hamlet, which give bonuses to certain characters or to yourself, like some free food every week

Not actually bad, it places a stress dot on the heroes inflicting about the same stress total as the attack did previous, but you can dispel it with the new Laudanum supply item. Fuck wasting inventory slots on it though.
>More enemies seem to have prot.
You might have last played before they gave every enemy and their mother's dog prot to encourage the usage of dots and PDs in general. Amusingly enough, direct damage is still the mathematically superior choice.

>>382838542
Every fight is slugging it out with the enemy, so you can't really avoid getting damage unless you have high speed on everyone and manage to one shot/stun everyone
Trinkets have a downside attached to them most of the time, kind of like if you wanted to put carapace armor on a dude he'd have a higher chance of getting shot at. Mostly it's all percentage manipulation. Loot is pretty random as well.
Characters MIGHT have bad "permanent" debuffs attached to them from the moment you get them, but at least you see them before deciding if you want the character.
You can get these same debuffs from enemies or or by just leveling them up, that means you either have to cure them in town which puts them out of commission and drains your cash a bit until the next dungeon run is finished. Sometimes they get those debuffs from the town activities themselves, sometimes they decide to fuck off to somewhere else until you complete yet another dungeon run. Curing every single one of those for all characters is pretty much impossible since you only have a set limit of curing slots and it takes money. If you wait too long on curing one it will cost even more to get rid of them.
These debuffs have buff counterparts as well, but those vary from usefulness as do the severity of the debuffs.
