Why do these names have to be combinations of 2 names? Why not go by the "roguelike" naming convention and name these subgenres after the game that started it. Like, instead of Metroidvania, we say Metroidlike.

Metroidvania only refers to the actual Castlevania games that borrow from Metroid, starting with SotN. But, people started using it for pretty much any remotely non-linear adventure/action game with RPG elements.
I've seen people call Dark Souls a Metroidvania. I've seen people call AM2R a Metroidvania.
