This is single-player open world survival done right

>there is a story
>there is a win condition (you can beat the game) so the game doesn't just persist forever with nothing to do
>very nice graphics
>horror elements
>pure gameplay and almost zero cut scenes
>the world is hand crafted
>exploration yields great discoveries
>you get no actual weapons
>metroidvania style world progression
>The game costs $10 and you get more gameplay and enjoyment out of it than a $60 game
>>
does it have a satisfying to use shotgun?
>>
>>382781462
I don't know how effective a shotgun would be underwater
>>
>>382781462
This. A good shotty makes or breaks a game.
>>
how's the diving controls? never seen an underwater game that actually controls well.
>>
>There is a story
I actually hate the story. I picked up the game because of cool alien world exploring under water. It feels like they shoehorned in the "ancient, super intelligent superior" race of aliens with their amazing technology.
>You get no actual weapons
They approached this awfully and could easily come up with workarounds that don't involve sandy hook.
>Metroidvania style world progression
How?
>>
>>382781650
>>Metroidvania style world progression

You need different items and vehicles to access different areas/depths.
>>
>>382781367

>>
>>382781829
I haven't played much into the genre so I'm not familiar with it entirely. Isn't that just normal progression? LoZ has this progression.
>>
>>382781367
but does it run like shit and do the devs care at this point? I recall the last major sale or two that the devs were 6+ months behind on updates and QoL touches, and some terraforming feature was causing the game to lag like hell

>>382781829
that's just progression, not Metroidvania. Metroidvania is constantly backtracking to other areas due to gaining abilities through items or equipment that allow one to access new areas or items.
>>
>>382781918
not really normal anymore since AAA games are just movies, but yeah, I wouldn't call it metroidvania. OP is weird.

Seriously fucking speargun when, I want to shoot those annoying sharks with pointy sticks
>>
>>382781980
Last time I played the pop in was still bad, objects were still rendering far out of view, and FPS was dropping if you had too many objects built. They removed terraforming because that was also apparently causing issues. RIP all those custom cyclops caves. From comments I've read, any sort of optimization won't happen until the last two months. So it probably still runs like shit.
>>
>>382782024
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metroidvania
>Metroidvania games generally feature a large interconnected world map the player can explore, though access to parts of the world is often limited by doors or other portals that can only be opened after the player has acquired special items, tools, weapons or abilities within the game. Acquiring such improvements can also aid the player in defeating more difficult enemies and locating shortcuts and secret areas, and often includes retracing one's steps across the map.

Sounds a lot like subnautica.
>>
>>382782276
Ok I admit I was wrong, sorry. Seems weird though because this isn't limited to metroid/castlevania.

Literally lying because you hate a game, wow.
>>
>>382781367
Why are there no weapons?

The game they did before subnautica was about spess mahrins genociding cute little alien doggos.

Why the sudden "guns are bad" bullshit shift?

I don't get what's scary about this game. I've heard that a few times so far. Is it just because people are afraid of the ocean?
>there is a win condition (you can beat the game) so the game doesn't just persist forever with nothing to do
It actually doesn't have an ending. It hasn't since it came out, because it's still EA. So no, it's not "done right"
>>
Is this another early access scam, or does it feel like an actually complete experience? The only EA game I bought was Lego Worlds, which was a massive scam.
Also, is it a game where you've pretty much done everything after a couple of hours, and the rest is just repetitive padding?
>>
>>382782587
>Is it just because people are afraid of the ocean?
Swimming in a body of water were the ground cant be seen (a lake is enough) is pure terror for me.
>>
>>382782629
They add some cool shit now and again, but it's early access and yes you are going to do everything after a couple of hours and start feeling the grind.
>>
>>382782441
I don't know but I like the game without proper weapons. Being able to just point at something you don't like and kill it really would change the dynamic of the game and, frankly, it would become trivial and uninteresting.
>>

ONE of the devs, ONE single person, went on a rant about shootings. ONE MOTHERFUCKER who didn't want any killing of anything at all. The rest of the devs agreed about no actual guns but because they want the game to be about survival and progressing the story and not swimming around shooting every single organism in the world but told him to sod off with his sob story and there's plenty of ways to defend yourself and kill shit in the game.

>>382782508
Because at this point it's a tired old shitposter tactic so fuck off with it.

>>382782547
Why do you want a fucking speargun so badly when there's a Propulsion/Repulsion Cannon that does the same thing and can kill a Reaper Leviathan with five Crashfish? Do you honestly think a piddly speargun would do anything to a 55-meter long killing machine?

The game was supposed to be released a long time ago, not to mention the map is tiny as shit. Multiplayer isn't happening. Not only that, but the faggots who play this game would have a heart attack if they tried to implement multiplayer.

Controls are by default on 'WASD' with Spacebar mapped to go straight up and C to go straight down. These controls are 100% remappable AND relative to the direction your facing. So if you are looking straight down and press W, you'll go straight down. The only time I end up using C to go down is in the giant submarine which can't "look" down.

You're just an underage homosexual.

Look at Resident Evil. That was originally a survival horror series. Then the games started becoming more focused on killing than surviving and it totally changed the game into something that it shouldn't have been. By RE6, there was no threat at all. Just endless ammo and you could even start using karate and ninjitsu and flashy wrestling moves on the zombies. It was a completely different genre. What virgins like you are suggesting is that they outright change the genre into something uninteresting just to suit you faggot ass bloodlust.

>are because they would trivialize the experience.

But that is not true.

It is far more trivializing to repeatedly ram a Stalker or snake with the seamoth or drill/knife it to death. Which is what that people say you can do whenever guns are brought up. It's also something that you kind of have to do if you want to peacefully build an underwater home in certain locations.

The most dangerous/creepy enemies would be the leviathans and the mesmer, which wouldn't be affected by a speargun anyway. Do you truly think the cave crawlers are scary, or just annoying?

Their reasoning for why an engineering vessel would not have items capable of being used for personal weaponry was weak, and I just chose the nearest world-building comparison to why that was wrong. People also seem to think that weapons in a survival game would turn the game into a mindless mess. I guess that would be true, if resources were infinite and the enemies you faced the deeper you went were actually vulnerable to weapons. Protip: They probably won't be affected by weapons.

A laser weapon or something futuristic makes more sense than a speargun, for fuck's sake if there's interplanetary travel there should be no reason to have a speargun over superior weaponry.

>A laser weapon or something futuristic makes more sense than a speargun

Achksually, the lore explains that futuristic weapons were banned after a massacre. Spearguns however are tools with a specific purpose.
>>
>>382789791
If you're going to get that nitpicky, the escape pods are woefully understocked with supplies to a nonsensical point for an interplanetary vessel. There should be several years worth of supplies on them, at least.

Regardless, a speargun doesn't even fit the aesthetic, I'd legitimately like to see someone design one that did.
Spearguns are supposed to be rusty clunky bigass pieces of kit, not smooth and white.

Anyone know how to fix this annoying bug that makes the music cut out seemingly at random? Also, sometimes you'll load up the game and your pressure mods don't activate despite being installed in the seamoth, so you get surprised by damage at 200m when you should be fine to 900. Does this happen to anyone else?
>>

I guess you can "kind of" call it Metroidvania. You go to one part of the map and explore until you face a road block like pressure or radiation, and then you go to the other end of the map to get a tool (or materials for the tool) in order to go back and clear that roadblock.

I guess that couod also describe Zelda games too, so maybe I'm a little unclear in what specifically makes a game have Metroidvania progression.

What is actually scary is the environment itself. Being 300m+ under and running out of power and oxygen. Getting turned around in a cave and being unable to remember where you came from. These would still exist even if you could murder everything you see.
>>
>>382792652

That's more annoying than scary. Especially when trying to explore the shitty underwater wrecks left over from the main ship. Only in this retarded universe does a tank of oyxgen last 30 seconds.

>Only in this retarded universe does a tank of oyxgen last 30 seconds.

It's an abstraction. The same way a day in the game only lasts like 10 minutes.
>>
>>382792941
It's another example of their inability to balance their game properly. Want to explore an underwater wreck? Park your seamoth just outside the entrance, waste about 5 minutes worth of time swimming back and forth trying to cut open the door, waste another 5 minutes worth of time swimming back and forth between the wreck and your moth because your oxygen is already halfway depleted by the time you get anywhere. It's stupidity. The days being short does not excuse this.

Not sure which is worse.

In the game you are a regular schmuck that has somehow survived the spaceship crash. Luckily you have a fabricator from the ship that can turn raw resources into useful items. You don't have the blueprints for more complicated items so you have to find currently existing ones before you can recreate them.
Imagine being on that ship before the crash though. Don't you think it would be a bit of a security risk to have any crew member able to just walk up to one of these things and pull out a fully loaded shotgun? Or grenades?

I honestly don't even need it doing anything. Just puttering around on the ocean floor and take a swing at you if you come close would be fine. Considering most of the work is already done anyway, there's no reason to have it.

Why would you need a speargun when the Propulsion Cannon can be gotten in the first five minutes and does everything a speargun can and better?

>grab things from range
>pick up edible fish and crafting materials without chasing
>chuck shit at Stalkers to kill them outright or make them fuck off

Find a Crashfish and grab it, swim to a nearby kelp forect, fire it at Stalker, no more Stalker.
>>
>>382803503
what? Most of your sustenance comes from fish.

Hmmmmmm

How do you know the player character is an engineer?
>>
>>382803195
no "actual" weapons. That is, weapons solely designed for destruction or mass destruction. The knife is a harvesting tool and the other items aren't used for killing. Just temporarily neutralizing.
>>
>>382803973
Doesn't matter what he is for the purpose of the story, what matters is that he isn't a hunter with knowledge of making weapons from scrap metal so stop demanding he be able to Macguyver together miniguns from dental floss and a warp engine.

Why do you need to have planters and create a farm when you can just keep murdering Peepers? Why would you build pipes when you can just use vehicles?

There are multiple solutions to problems in the game, as there should be.

Exactly. You can chase down those fish or grab them with a Propulsion. You can swim to the Floating Island to get a marblemelon every time you need to eat or you can build a growbed and grow your own Marblemelons. You can breathe underwater with tubes or go into a vehicle.

Why does the game absolutely positively without argument or question require a fucking speargun at all?

>Propulsion cannon
Fuck me, I have the fucking cyclops, seamoth and all sorts of good shit but I've only found 1/2 schematics for that fucking cannon.

Also what is the deal with those two fucking spergs arguing about a speargun? The real problem is the lack of fucking copper unless you can harvest the big nodes, shit tons of silver and gold and fuck all copper
>>
>>382805078
the starting area has tons of it.

There's propulsion cannon pieces all over the place alongside the Aurora.

There, now you actually have a valuable reason to use the Cyclops

no weapon is fucking retarded in a survival situation on an unknown hostile planet.
still, this is a great game.

It's supposed to but I'm lucky if I can find one or two searching the whole zone

>>382805351
Deep end or shallow? The cyclops can only get to 500m since it seems the upgrades are in the Aurora and I need the cannon to clear the door

>>382805405
I wish I knew

Is moving my power cell charger onto the Cyclops a good idea or does it drain more power than it outputs?
>>
>>382805740
I'd be inclined to agree but weapons can absolutely wreck survival games. The Forest becomes a cake-walk and loses all tension real fast because of them
>>
It's performance is trash on my 970, borderline unplayable

Even trade. You'll gain nothing.

Fuck, I read that at one point it generated more than it drained, figured they'd have fixed that by now
>>
>>382806194
It used to be profitable (2016 june), did they change it?
I would get infinite power that way
>>
Just found the island.
Is this a good place to build a base, given the exterior/interior garden blueprints and shit?

I'm trying to figure out where to build a decent primary base.

Lmaoooo
>>
>>382806191
I get an average of ~90fps maxed on a 980ti but there are plenty of instances where the FPS goes well below 60. They have yet to do a proper optimization pass, it seems.
>>
>>382806330

I did not pirate it. I'll definitely refund once it leaves early access though despite having 30 hours in it. :^)

>Why would I play a game who's dev blames us for shit like Columbine? HE thinks we're dangerous if he adds guns to his game.

I hate the dumbass who first posted this SJW cringey bullshit.

It was later clarified by another dev that their decision not to include guns in the game had nothing to do with politics, and everything to do with the setting.

You're playing as a scientist/engineer in a complex alien ecosystem. You're not a character who goes in guns blazing, you're a researcher first and foremost with weapons a distant last resort. Another reason they decided not to add guns was because they felt it would destroy much of the enjoyment of the gameplay. Instead of learning the quirks of each individual species of fish and how to navigate them they suspected players would instead shoot everything if they were given a proper weapon.

That being said, they do allow room for creative use of mechanics to kill things. Like you can breed those crash fish in an aquarium and use them in junction with a gravity gun if you really want to explode things.
>>
>>382806448
>>382806458
Yeah, it used to give way more than it drained but it was a bug they intended to fix but just took them forever to do so. I think it was either the Silent Running update or VotD. Makes sense though, being able to charge your Power Cells like that sort of made they whole thing pointless.

>>382806678
Above water bases can be screwy. The area below is the Grand Reef though, which is quite safe, not too deep in areas 200 - 500m mostly, and not too heavy on hostile wildlife as long as you stay out of it's caverns below.

>>382806715
Never tried. I think you actually could in the past, but was fixed a long time ago. There's now the Heat Charging Module (not called that) though, which works like the one for the PRAWN with the difference being it only works below 30% power because with six Cells, that's quite a bit.
