If you play Xenogears nowdays, its for the story, which is still one of the best in JRPGs and videogames in general. Its not perfect, campy and edgy at moments, but a great story none the less.

If it's a JRPG that someone tells you "gets good x hours in" it's a waste of time. I'm not wasting my life playing something shit under the vague promise it'll get better. I gave Persona 3 a chance on /v/'s recommendation and it was as boring and badly written at the end as it was at the beginning.

I play games to take a break from tedious work not add to it. A game's job is to entertain you. Any time it's not doing that is a failure on the part of the dev.
