In most games like this I have this one magnum opus I spend ages making. I then finish it, take a bunch of screenshots, marvel at it, and then close to game only to never play it again. At this point it's a pattern and almost a conscious goal I work towards.

Applies to Citybuildans and whatnot too. I recently spent ages building a non-modded +200k pop aesthetics circle city in Cities Skylines, and now that it's done, and now that I've unlocked everything in the game with it, I'm done with it until further notice.

Two years ago. My 11-year-old brother convinced me to play with him on some server with IC2. He mostly fucked around with pvping other players, when I focused on building stuff. In about 2 weeks we both had the best equipment. But the most fun was in dealing with other players. Besides usual pvp and hunting we did some other stuff:
- I would set up a trade with random people, then my bro would arrive and kill us both, like it was accidental, and he was totally not affiliated with me
- finding chests at the edge of privated regions, then we attached tubes and mechanisms to them, that sucked out all the loot
- convincing other people to leave their house, so we could kill them: mostly, it were newbies, so we returned all the loot
- building solar panels near other people's shops. Mechanisms operated only if people were present nearby
- child labor and abuse of it: we hired a kid and forced him to work in the mine, because we have geared him up. This was really effective: he brought us ores, and we would pay him about 20% of its cost. On a third day he left and robbed a part of our house that we have built for him: thankfully, it cost us about 2 of his runs.

When the 1.8 update came out. Fucked with the statistics of my game setting them all back to 0. Hadn't been playing for months up until that point and I think that was the final straw.

Used to play it a lot few years ago, but then I got bored with it. I played in vanilla with my brothers. It's a fine game and all, but it has that bittersweet feeling of "missed potential". When it was still in early access the players could only imagine what the new updates would be, but every time the new update felt kinda underwhelming. I was waiting for the possibility to build your own sea ship that floats and moves, and you could use it as your mobile home and travel across the vast oceans of Minecraft. But all we got was that stupid boat that doesn't even look like a boat.

I also wish it was possible to build a submarine and make your own undersea glass dome and watch as gigantic sea monsters flow by. Or maybe a giant airship that could hold little airplanes inside you can use to fly to the ground and and back. But nope, never anything like that.

These all are probably possible with some mods, but it's just not the same. You can build picture related in vanilla, but then what? What do you do when it's done? There's nothing interesting going on at the bottom of the sea, no sea monsters, no big fish, nothing.

Think the last time was a year ago or so when a friend asked me to play one of those Tekkit modpacks with him. From what I gathered it essentially just lead to transmuting items out of fucking light itself and then just making some retardedly overpowered items, and since that doesn't really amount to anything more I just thought it was dumb and stopped playing.

Community in the game is really bad. Server owners sell admin rights for money, so some idiot kid can be invincible and get infinite resources. Kids barely trust anyone, spend most of their time mining alone, don't cooperate, with smallest opportunity try to rob you of your possessions. They kill on sight in the wilderness, like it's Counter-Strike. No one takes up roles: everybody thinks they are a king of the server and indiscriminate killer.
That's sad: if they put even a minimal effort in actually playing the damn game, Minecraft would be many times better.

I think it's less that it's easier to mod the game now and more that I'm no longer a kid and can actually figure it out. Doing something I wasn't able to do before gave me this amazing rush, this plus nostalgia.

If you like adventures and teamwork, you might like our server. I play in a group called "Cloud Riders" - it's because our base is a giant sky ship, hidden in the clouds. We control the central jungle and small part in Twilight Zone (a realm, like Nether). We specialize in researchers' escort and protection: some people like to travel into abandoned libraries, castles and data centers - and they need food, ammunition, tecnical supply and fighting force. Research work is precious, and some bandits would try and attack us, but we are really good with creating traps and ambushes, so brute force doesn't work. Once we were escorting some professor into Tomb of Doom: he discovered a hidden passage there. But Dark Covenant knew about his operations (spies are common on our server, i think our Techie might be a spy) and sent their Clerics after us. But we have prepared the place and were victorious, even though I have almost died.
There is a war between two lumber harvesting companies, Big Tree - one of them - proposed a mercenary contract, where we have to infiltrate their competitor's tech center. Tough job, but I think we can take it.

Before and slightly after the halloween update me and my friends would use a hacked client to turn invisible and fuck with people on servers. I would place TNT at the top of a tree, which they would hit while chopping down the tree and die. I would also randomly place pressure plates on top of sand on top of TNT and they'd die to that too. That was back before people were wise to that obvious trick.

I miss those days.
