First of all, thank you all who participated in the first test run yesterday, for those who played in the server, please, evaluate your experience here:

For those who don't know, I intend to open a new party van like the old days as I saw that a lot of people in here feel nostalgic about it and wanted it back. I use my own server to host it. Still, I have to remind that this second party van is not related at all with the first one, I have nothing to do with the first party van staff, what are we trying in here is to make our own second party van, starting from scratch listening to your ideas and suggestions, every anon can participate in this.

Now, as I said yesterday, before we open the server again for a second test run we must discuss some issues and suggestions that you said yesterday. First of all:

What we have:
>A TF2 server hosting "Free for all" custom maps, 32 slots, located in Spain (North), fine hardware and 300 mbps optic fiber.
>FastDL
>Custom vote system (rtv)
>5 maps: MARIO_KART, harbl_hotel, cyberpunk, balloon_race_v2b and ctf_convoy_v2
>Global micspam and voice commands spam allowed

Issues:
>Some people reported having problems with FastDL, not being able to download the map and getting an autokick from the server. I'll be going to bed soon OP, but if the server is still up, or open again for testing tonight, I'll give it a shot. I'd like the option for regular maps, aside from meme ones though. Then again, this is Party Van so I don't think that's really a choice. I never played on that server, just Water's/Skillzero's.

You don't need to repair the dispenser, because it's behind you and behind the Sentry. Sentries absorb splash damage from a given angle.

It depends on the angle and proximity to health/ammo packs on both sides, and how much time they get to set up, but Engineer can either hold off a Soldier forever, or else the Soldier runs him over after a few rockets.

You see, Soldier's Rocket Launcher damage is sustained. It can't do more than 90 damage to Engie's Sentry per Rocket. Soldier has 4 Rockets before reloading. And Engineer can heal 105 damage per Wrench swing.

So, Engineer's sustained healing matches Soldier's sustained damage.

Meanwhile, Demoman can throw eight stickies under a Sentry, and do 960 burst damage in one go.

This is why Demoman counters Engineer, and Soldier doesn't.

A hard counter is a strategy that completely shuts another one down with no chance of beating it.

Since Engineer can kill Demo with his Shotgun, Demo is NOT a hard counter to Engineer.

Demo is Engineer's soft counter. Soldier is not Engineer's counter at all.

You're completely ignoring the factor of Rocket Launcher reloads (when Wrench never needs to reload), and the fact of Rocket Launcher running out of ammo and Soldier needing to go find more.

When Soldier has to run to an ammo box, Engineer can run to a metal box.

This means that, depending on map positioning, the Engineer can potentially hold off the Soldier forever.

It really isn't though. Engineers commonly set up near Metal sources. As some examples: Badwater first near the full ammo box or medium hp and medium ammo box. Dustbowl stage 2 point C right near the medium ammo box. Upward point 1 with a medium ammo box upstairs.

So in conclusion it's common for Engineers to set themselves up near ammo sources, and with a good enough setup, they can become totally irremovable by a Soldier, but still easily removed by a Demo.

You're forgetting:

It takes the Rocket Launcher 3.68 seconds to reload a full clip.

And let's even say that the Engineer is in a situation with no Metal boxes and Soldier can outsustain him. That's still not the same thing as countering.

A soft counter is a class who holds a strong advantage over another, like Demo's high burst damage against stationary targets versus Engineer's sustain-focused stationary aimbots. Soldier holds no strong advantage over Engineer, whether he wins or is forced to turtle forever is entirely dependent on Engineer's access to Metal sources.

I think it's pretty much a waste of time arguing semantics.

Hard counter as "one strategy totally dominates another" and Soft counter as "one strategy has an advantage over another, but can lose" are the most common definitions I've seen.

Arguing what words mean isn't going to get us anywhere. The meaning of words is entirely contingent on how the majority of people use them.

To me it looks like the definition from my sources makes a lot more sense anyway, by making the distinction between "guaranteed to beat" and "not guaranteed to beat".

It's all fine and well to disparage urbandictionary and a wiki page but I'm yet to see your sources, or even your definition, for what a hard counter and a soft counter is.

The way I learned it, hard counter means guaranteed to beat, thus describing why infantry can't damage tanks in Command and Conquer, or why Scissors beats Paper.

It's the perfect description for the situation.
