I'm pretty sure I remember their being hardly any Rations, because I never had to use them, but after a while realised I hadn't seen any for a while when I picked one up

Metal Gear and Metal Gear: Snake's Revenge give you even more rations. At any rations location you can grab as many as you can carry.
