I just think Uematsu's work in the Final Fantasy series is generic and forgettable as fuck. They used to be decent on the NES when he composed more simple tunes but after tech started progressing and he had to up his game the music just started to sound really generic from the SNES-era onwards most of the time.

Depends on the track but Sonic music has always been pretty freestyle, although rarely did it found it unfitting. Either way it's irrelevant when it comes to judging the quality of the music itself. And as for being in the background/center Sonic has always had a stong musical identity since Sonic 1. Just go play something like Marble Zone for example...the music is so strong.

While this statement is technically true, I think the SA games (especially 2) do a really good job of making the songs fit their stages and the gameplay of each type of stage. Sonic's are fast paced and upbeat, Knuckles are more reserved and atmospheric, etc.

Also, I like them putting story-relevant stuff in the song lyrics, as long as it's not blatantly obvious that they're singing about Sonic or whatever. It's something I wish more games did. I always felt like the writers in these games had a lot of story content, character motivations, and just ideas in general that they couldn't really work into the cutscenes so a lot of them are shown through the song lyrics instead.
