The original TMNT cartoon got a 90's (as in, made in the 90's, not characterized by the 90's) edgy makeover characterized by the fact that every single outdoor scene had a red sky looming above. Mind you, the Ninja Turtles were no strangers to grim and gritty - the source material was a comic book that personified it. But this makeover was awful, and it wasn't even as edgy in practice as it was visually. Much like Satam, really. They're almost like brother series in that way.

Sonic the Comic had the benefit of being owned by Fleetway, so many of the people working on it already had decades of experience with darker sci-fi storytelling from working on the various 2000 AD comics.

I just loved the way Long John rolled those R's. RRRRRobotnik!

As a kid I used to read the Archie Comics out loud and I'd try mimicking his voice. Even the menacing SatAM style parts would have sounded good with his style.
His voice was just a perfect mix. It danced around vile and whimsy like Mark Hamill's Joker.
