What do you exactly gain from consuming them?
Do they provide knowledge or something else than any other medium can't?
Can you produce something out of them?

Why do video games exist?

They exist to consume my time and make me forget everything I should be doing instead. Everytime I look back at the youth I spent playing games, the late nights on vidya instead of studying, or the days I stayed inside to play instead of socializing, I'm so damn ashamed. I fucking hate video games.

It's an addictive disease, a damn narcotic that's damn hard to shake off once you get hitched. I've never experienced something so useless yet so rewarding. Played games for most of my life and I have nothing to show for it.

>>382729840
Bit by bit. I realized how inconstructive it was, and how I was for the most part behind my peers in nearly everything. So I set out to change it. I've been playing less and less the last two years, coming to an almost full stop these past six months. I've got more energy to do things I really want to be doing, my social relationships and social skills have seen a massive improvement, and the time spent on socializing, studying, and activities, have left me with fond memories instead of a disrupted sleep schedule.

But I notice 4chan and the internet in general is just as bad as video games, so I'm cutting that out aswell. It's a hard monkey to kill, but I'm determined to better myself. Fucking hate this place as well.

>>382729840

>have decent discipline/willpower
>can juggle life and play
games have no addictive properties, stop blaming your own failings on something else. games did hold you down and make you play them, you chose to play them and you can choose not to. it's that simple.

Because we live in a world where the vast majority have a completely meaningless life and will never accomplish anything because of the overpopulation plaguing planet earth and making millions of people born and raised under completely worthless mentors and parental figures.
Life itself has become monotonous and stressful with an increasingly incompetent leader class making everything worse as quickly as they can.

Playing video games to escape the terrible reality of humanity and fulfill the instinctual desire to accomplish something is expected of the average human living under a societal structure based around treating each other like livestock.
It is escapism. Earth is hell. Life is meaningless.
Video Games are fun.

Well... some of them.

Video games are escapism, plain and simple. The use of said escapism, however, varies in reasoning.

Video games, like movies and books, serve as a gateway to interests and concepts beyond the norm (or, in fact, a simple retelling of the norm from a foreign perspective to the player). You play a video game, watch a movie or read a book to experience something different. However, some people do this for the sake of a new experience and some people do this for a different experience - some use the escapism of video games as a supplement while some use it as a replacement. This is the difference between someone that casually plays video games as a hobby and someone that has a commitment to them.

The development of video games over the years since the 70's has pushed technological boundaries in such a way that it reflects on our peoples as a whole - there stood a very strong chance that the concept of video games could have been delayed or even never to have had possibly ever actually happen. Now, however, video games reflect a current peoples' interests as well as social and technological development. It is very easy to glean what was on the mind of people from the 80's and 90's in comparison to games of this era. It's very easy to visualize how perspective, such as our views towards women and minorities, has changed over the years. They serve as an interactive visual chronicle of our development as a society.

Other mediums can bring across the same information, but in a such a diverse society as Earth's, there will always be variation in regards to how information is exchanged, presented and preserved.

Games aren't a means to an end for the most part.
You play them because you like to play or like to get better at them or like to play them with others.
Games most definately provide things other media can't.
No other media can piss you in the face for not being good enough, no other media have this level of control over environment, challenge, sound-design, immersion, worldbuilding, relatively fair balancing for competition, freedom to use and make up physical logic to make puzzles and challenges, freedom to pick your own path in a fictional world and a slew of other things.

>Do they provide knowledge or something else than any other medium can't?

No other medium can do what video games do. When you watch a hero slay a dragon. You watch a hero slay a dragon. When you kill a dragon in a video game. you personally killed that dragon. It is a sensation unlike anything short of lucid dreaming

>>382731069
>games have no addictive properties
Mental addictions, psychological dependence and deeply set habits are all things, otherwise people wouldn't have serious problems with gambling, eating, biting their nails, smoking weed and playing video games.

Of course decent discipline acts as a great buffer against all of these things but that's not something every person is born with. For a lot of people discipline can be something that has to be taught and cultivated through parents, the environment, peers etc..

> it's that simple.
Human behavior usually isn't simple at all, we haven't even come close to fully understanding our own brains.

What's the point of eating oreos?

What do you exactly gain from consuming them?
Do they provide knowledge or something else than any other medium can't?
Can you produce something out of them?

Why do oreos exist?
>>
>>382732258
This makes sense on a surface and technical level but a strong part of me feels like it's a copout.

Like yeah, every species procreates and most species are the way they are due to procreation and most species' traits are specifically there to aid in procreation in some way but at the same time, if you go back to the very very first organism that every existed you'd have to figure that it didn't give a fuck about making babies or splitting itself up. The first organism, in all likelihood, just was, procreation was probably just a thing it happened to do.

Is the meaning of my life and everyone else's really just one of the things my earliest ancestor just happened to do? I don't think so. Honestly, it's probably best to just assume that there is no inherent meaning to life and instead make our own, with hookers and blackjack.
>>
>>382739419
Oreos exist for interracial jokes.
>>
>>382737465
Actually not true at all. Your brain rewards you almost the exact same amount when you slay that dragon as when your favourite sports team wins a game while you watch from your couch.

It's the main reason MOST people consume video games by watching others play. You have about 140,000,000 people worldwide who play actual video games (no web browser or phone shit), but then over 200,000,000 people who just watch those same games being played and get almost the same level of entertainment.
