at least that's what i've heard from literally every kiseki fan since cold steel i & ii came out, anyway.

I've been playing CS1 on and off since I got my Vita last year. I don't enjoy it as much as TiTS because the main cast is mostly lame, but the lore and comfy atmosphere is still top notch.

The worldbuilding and lore is the best in the entire series, but the characters are really hit and miss. Some are top-tier, some are the worst in the franchise.
Rean's the most developed and complex of all Trails protagonists bar none even though he's no where near as likable as Estelle or Kevin.

It's Falcom's attempt to appeal to a modern audience, Falcom was really concerned because the primary audience for their games in the 00s were 30-40 year old men who grew up on 80s and 90s Ys and early Legend of Heroes games and not a lot of younger people were buying their stuff.

Also keep in mind that Falcom's always been really anime, it's just that they took a while to adapt to the 2010s. If this were still the 90s Falcom games like Brandish would be just as weeby as Cold Steel and Tokyo Xanadu seem to us in the 10s.

The dub grew on me though. I mean the quality ramps up during the first game a lot. The actors really suck at the intro sequence. Late game I only find Fie shit and it's not really due to bad acting but due to voice not fitting her that fell.

the structure of these games really turned me off. it starts to feel pretty tedious and gets kind of boring after a while. the battle system and the things going on in the story are pretty decent though.

I liked it and I never really like the "chore simulator" type of game that CS1 school portion totally is so I dunno what it did right.

I think part of it might be how they cared about all the little characters so much, every time you advance through time half a day everyone in the school moves around and gets a new line and talking to the NPCs is actually more interesting instead of Tales of tier where you like got a kid in the library or something and his line is "Reading is fun!".
