If you believe that, it's because you didn't actually lived in the era. Game stores were decorated with Crash stuff, it appeared in TV shows as the "flavor of the month" video game, and there were more positive reviews than negative ones in specialized mags. Again, it didn't reached that big success because Sony didn't bother with having a mascot (but he was de facto PS1 mascot) and Activision bought the brand and didn't made anything good with it. The hype of the remaster shows how loved he was back in the day.
