Everyone always goes on about Grizzly Hills, which I too absolutely loved.
But nothing takes the cake for me like Howling Fjord did.

Howling Fjord had such a distinct feel to it, with aesthetics and music, no other zone managed to grasp.

Not only that, it was very diverse in it's quests and themes

If you do a bit of Stonetalon in the gaps, you can stay in the Barrens for 15 or so levels. It's honestly a huge zone. It's probably not as efficient as some Alliance areas because you have to walk so much, but it's just so comfy.

Question for Cataclysm players and above.

I've been playing for an hour or so in a private server as a Troll. The isles stuff was fun as shit for a beginner quest chain, but the rest is just the same as the old quest with the centaurs, except instead of them there is now Alliance soldiers.

When does the content upgrade from Vanilla to Cataclysm is more noticiable? Next zone (lvl 15-25?) or should I just go ahead and make a Goblin and go from there to see more new content.

I'm a Vanilla+TBC+Wrath player.

Durotar and Northern Barrents haven't been changed that much other than a few things. If you really want something different, the Undead starting zones (Tirisfall, Silverpine, and Hillsbrad) are all really good.
If you want to stay in Kalimdor, go to Stonetalon. Though to get there you have to do a certain quest in Ashenvale to even be eligible for any Stonetalon quests.

Stonetalon got completely revamped and was improved a lot. Most other zones were either not memorable or completely ruined.

The newer zones in MoP/WoD/Legion haven't been that bad. The biggest problem with the Cata rework is that it destroyed the old world people loved, but for the most part people don't love Azeroth now like they did before, so maybe people won't hate it as much. I'd also like to believe that Blizzard knows what they did wrong, but that might be thinking too much of them.

Part of what they did wrong was that they made the threat of Deathwing too all-encompassing. The Vanilla world had a bunch of separate storylines happening, but if it wasn't Deathwing in Cata, it was Alliance vs Horde shit.

Another problem were making everything too gag-heavy. A ton of pop culture references in places that didn't need it. Partially it was due to a lot of the expansion just straight up being rushed and unfinished. Remember how Uldum was 50% Indiana Jones references?

My best experience with WoW was a smaller PvP based Wrath private server in 2009-2010ish.

Several things were broken, there was p2w unobtainable donation gear, and all of the playerbase was a bunch of teenagers, and the GMs and admins were at most 20 as well.
In spite of this the sense of community both on the forums and on the server was fantastic. I logged on mostly just to sit in the mall spawn and chat with people since everyone worth knowing knew each other. You'd play some arenas and then trash talk people afterwards in the cross faction global chat, or camp their ass with your buttbuddies in the ever popular Gurubashi.
It was almost like playing an inhouse game.
GMs would also host events almost every day like Hide n Seek and especially Arena tournaments like 1v1 and 3v3 (in the open world, so everyone can spectate, teams would take turns and be eliminated on a loss).
Getting high ratings in PvP, winning events and making a name for yourself basically made you a GOD in the eyes of all the 15 year olds playing.
The friendships I formed on that server has lasted well until today.

It was just a small shitty Wrath server, but it was OUR small shitty Wrath server.

Some girl died who loved the zone.

They had an in game funeral.

Some alliance guild disrupted it because PVP server.

I was on that server and turned the zone into a meme. It became filled with people trying to be funny in general chat.

i loved hellfire. everyone always bitched about the fel reaver and getting ganked, but it was one of the few zones that always put me on edge and felt like anything could happen at any time.

it's a different kind of appreciation, unlike zangarmarsh and nagrand which i love for the exact opposite reason, which is how comfy and relaxing they are.

Elysium is kinda the scucessor of Nostalrius, but its absolute shit ran by autists so dont bother

the servers that people are talking about now are Gummy(Felmyst) and Northcraft, bot should be released in the next 2-3 weeks so you should probably check them

Aside for that, teres Crestfall, an actual progression server(starts in vanilla, and goes to tbc/wotlk/cata/etc, depending on what the people would want i guess), and its also the server that will seem to have the most competent developers
In my opinion, Crestfall will be the server so ill just wait for it to release

Azshara had little to do with the lore, was barely developed before they dropped it, and was massively improved in Cata, when nothing of value was lost.

the only benefit to tbc over vanilla is how TBC raids forced personal accountability by being 25 man, meaning you couldnt just be a shitter and get carried by 39 others. that being said, 40 man raids were more fun

WoTLK should have come before burning crusade. Arthas is the most obvious villain to go to after vanilla and Nax and beating up the dudes that cause the scourge in the first place makes more sense after you beat up the scourge. Also heading back to Azeroth after weird Alien outland is a bit of an anti-climax.
