Early game your best bet is trying to cozy up to lords or factions and get made into a mercenary so you can start attacking other factions. Bandits take a few weeks to start spawning in droves so going neutral is slow no matter what.

The thing I've found so far is that maxing out your army size with grunts is dumb. Makes you move slower (so you can't catch the weak groups to level up/get loot) and they are terrible fighters to begin with. Your better off keeping it small to begin with until you have a 10-20 all mounted group and then bring on the pawns.

Start out buying up businesses in various towns, by talking to guild masters. Then once you gain lordship and own some villages, they'll give you rents as long as you stop them from being looted by enemy lords. Eventually you can nab some castles and towns, which can give you a shit load of money every week, so at the moment I'm still making about 500 denars profit a week even with such a huge army. Most of it is also stashed in my castle garrison too, so that they only cost half as much.

Winning tournaments, helping lords win battles, becoming a merc and then a lord.
If you want to be a lord, starting off as a merc is a good way to do it. Just take missions from random lords of whatever factions you like until one of them offers you a merc contract, stick with that for maybe 2-4 months and the king will probably ask you if you want to swear vassalage to him, and give you a village fief. If not you can find him and ask him to take you as a vassal, but you'll need about 200 renown as a male, and more if you're female.

Swadia is good for being central in the map.
Nords have Sea Raider bandits for good looting, but they can kick your ass if you're not good.
Khergits and Sarranids will end with you getting literally raped by mounted bandits constantly.
Rhodoks are a fucking meme.
Vaegirs are shitty and die every time, but you get Sea Raiders there, even more so than Nords from my experience.

Food variety (make sure you have lots of types of food, not loads of one type), winning lots of battles.

I always try to keep most of my army in castles and towns, since morale doesn't matter there, and run around with a 30-50 man army. Then when I need a larger force, e.g. for a siege or defending a fief, I pop back to my castle to pick up extra men, and dump them back in when I'm done.
If you don't have a castle yet then I don't know how you can even have 300 men, but I'd suggest getting one ASAP.
