I really like Ghost of Sparta.

Been playing GOW1 and was expecting it to have more bosses other than the Hydra but nothing so far after it up to when you get the Artemis Blade. Do GOW2 and GOW3 increase the boss count?

I've played all of 1, a lot of 2 and some of Chains of Olympus. The gameplay never really changes.

I'm trying to play the first one right now and I'm not digging the combat.
I try to mix up my attacks but I ultimately just keep mashing Square.

Kinda. In GoW2 you get different weapons, so there is some variance there, but I think the chains are still the best option. You should definitely play the second one though before you give up on the franchise, it's like ten times better than the first one.

Ascension doesn't get the credit it deserves. The game was damn good, had the best writing, and had fantastic areas and bosses. It just suffered from poor design choices when they tries to change up the combat formula. I don't blame them but making your rage bar disappear if you took a hit and just changing your damage type on your blades made the game stale using the same weapons the entire time. Even if you picked up an enemy weapon it wouldn't last long. Great music too.

I've never played Ascension, but I'd say the first one is my favorite. It has some of the best puzzles and boss fights and is most memorable. They're all good though and by the end of three it felt really satisfying to look back and know you have singlehandedly killed an entire pantheon of gods.

Chains of Olympus was very rushed and the first attempt of porting GoW to PSP. It was successful at that, but working with that engine took a lot of their development time, so they had to make the experience very shallow compared to Ghost of Sparta, which came out months after III. They really refined everything in GoS, in my opinion.

the other games are more lenient, but it rewards you greatly to find everything you can

They start giving more as the game goes on, but yeah, at first your best bet is to get red orbs from enemies, keeping the combos going so you get more bonus orbs.

Also, keep looking for secret chests, once you max out your health and mana, the chests that would otherwise have gorgon eyes or phoenix feathers start giving red orbs as well.

Why, there are mid-bosses in all other GoW games that are better than the Persephone fight, the combat is terribly simplistic compared to the other titles and the level design is atrocious (with the exception being Helios' temple).

I played every God of War back to back over the course of a couple of days and that's one of the only things I remember from any of them. I'm wouldn't be surprise if it's the worst seeing as they're all a blur to me and I can barely differentiate one from another in my mind. I'm actually just about to wrap up playing through all of them chronologically (just started 3). So far, I'd say they were all pretty fantastic except Ascension, which felt tedious, especially on hard. Chains of Olympus is a little outdated, but still solid. Without having finished 3, I'd say that either the best is either 1, or Ghost of Sparta. 2 was great, but I feel like I never got over how stupid Zeus's "trick" was, and that Kratos actually fell for that shit.

I'd say the first one, because Kratos was just an anti-hero instead of a full blown villain and the game has some legitimate challenge to it where as the further the series goes, the easier it gets. Plus I feel it captures the feeling of a huge Greek epic better than the other games ever did.
