How do they do it? There are indie games bigger than 3GB, are Nintendo the kings of compression?
>a game full of nothing without SP is 3GB
WOWWWWWWWW
there might be an additional update download
how much space can switch cards hold anyway?
>>382661915
This can't be real
>>382661915
Games are huge nowadays because they need a ton of "realistic" textures for each and every fucking thing you will see. If you make a cartoon game, you won't need all that space. Your textures can be simple and light.
>>382662149
Standard Switch cards are 32GB I believe.
>Zelda DLC on Wii U is 3.7 GB
>>382661915
because the game literally has gamecube tier textures and it's mostly multiplayer where the only thing you have to render is the map and squids.
>>382661915
Lite release followed by a continued rollout of free DLC
>>382661915
if it's anything like splatoon 1, the release game will have barebones content. then they continue to update it for the next year or two.
Shitty graphics with no textures for one.
>>382662139
>without SP
Better SP than splatoon 1 and the 90% of this year games
The two big space hogs are textures as the other guy said, and sound. Mainly voice acting or if the developers uncompress the audio. FMVs can also still get pretty big but they're rarely used anymore.
>>382661915
Because they don't have VA in 600 different languages that all need to get installed in case you want to hear mario say WAAHOO in Scandinavian.
>360p flat textures
>king of compression
>>382662263
They're 16, 32, or 64.
>>382661915
>low rest textures
>low poly models
>barely any content
how do they do it
simple
its devoid of content
>>382661915
>Nintendo the kings of compression?
they actualy DO compression
>>382661915
Splatoon 1 was 900mb on release, so either they've locked a shitload of content behind closed doors, or theres at least 3.2 times the content Splatoon 1 had at release, considering they're running at the same resolution and the compression on the switch is leagues above the WiiU
>>382662149
8, 16, 32 and 64GB
Only game I've seen on an 8GB cartridge so far was Isaac
>>382661915
I'd love to see a challenge for indie devs to see what who can make the best game to fit in a 56kb GameBoy cartridge.
They might be the only ones even bothering with compression these days.
>>382661915
Wew I need a big 100gb for my big alpha dick spacelets aren't worth my time
>>382661915
They are creating own engines in most cases and not using some bloatcrap like Unity
>>382663332
No they don't. The game simply has basic textures and barely any audio.
>>382661915
they are the dark souls of compression
>>382662271
it isn't, 1.3.0 update is like 3GB because it includes all the stuff from the day one update
DLC is 800MB
>>382663676
It's 800 on Switch I believe
>>382663662
>barely any audio.
irrelevant, Audio is the most heavy part of any game.
even DUDUDU DUDU DUDU takes a shit ton of space
>>382662139
>without SP
What did he mean by this?
>>382663960
>irrelevant, Audio is the most heavy part of any game.
True.
I recall an interview with Nobuo Uematsu where he outlined the reason FFVIII had a forth disc in the first place was there were a series of WAV files and an FMV in the ending cutscene that took up so much space they had to cut free roaming out from the disc and have only a final dungeon on the disc. And it STILL barely fit.
>>382661915
yes, nintendo despises games that force the player to stare at a loading screen
>>382661915
>game that aims for cartoony 720 with medium details doesn't need as big assets as other aiming for 4K realistic look with ultra details
>How do they do it?
Yeah, that will forever stay a mystery.
>>382664660
Game is 1080p.
>>382661915
>5 maps with 256x256 textures (often flat colours) and generic bing bing wahoo noises as sound files
>"WOOOOWWW HOW DO THEY FIT IT IN 3.1GB?!?!?"
Makes you think
>>382661915
it looks like a 6th gen game in 2017
>>382662630
>mario say WAAHOO in Scandinavian.
I want this.
>all these shitposts about "nografix" and "nocontent"
I would blame you, but I guess you need something to do to pass the time while sitting through yet another loading screen for Crash.
>>382665195
it's true, splatoon has low resolution graphics and the available content is minimal at best. it's kind of ridiculous that nintendo is charging sixty american dollars for a handheld game.
They don't bloat their games with 50 GB of uncompressed audio files
>>382665452
(You)
nintendo are always the gods of compression
>>382664989
No one is going to waste resources and battery power in portable mode.
HW isn't powerful enough to warrant completely reworked much more detailed assets in docked mode.
HW outputting in 1080 doesn't mean shit.
Switch will always be weighted down by it's portability.
>>382665669
No that would be pied piper. Nintendo doesnt even use middle out.
>>382665195
>wonders why people talk about graphics and content when we're talking about size in storage
What the fuck do you think, retard? That's (and audio) what determines the size of the damn thing.
>>382665932
the hell are you on
>>382663676
The DLC was 100mb for me. Are you sure?
>>382665669
>use low resolution textures and make small multiplayer maps on handheld hardware
"GODS OF COMPRESSION"
>>382662220
Worked for Overwatch as well it was less than 10GB at launch, probably a bit bigger now a years worth of updates.
>A listing of the download version of the game on Amazon Japan has revealed that Splatoon 2 will require 5.5GB of space on your Switch.
By the way. Splatoon 1 was about 1.8 gigs at launch.
>>382662597
Makes me think of vanquish on PC. Actual game was about 3GB with 18 or so GB of pre rendered cutscenes.
>>382666666
>>382666590
Sorry, we dont care about facts in a Nintendo thread, so get out of here.
>>382662149
>switch cards
>cards
Isn't it carts as in cartridges?
>>382661915
>low resolution assets
>no pre rendered cutscenes
KANGZ OF COMPRESSION!!!!
>>382667014
How long have you been away?
Non-0-dubs have been gone for years on /v/.
>>382663960
How is it irrelevant that much of the game outside of battles consist of 10 second music loops and the same voices and effects are reused over and over?
>>382667021
they're probably are those people that think low resolution mean "large square pixels" with those old "TF2 on Wii" macro images
>>382665037
Not a single thing you said was correct
